So, after seeing QL on and off at various other ESPORTS events, I decided I would see what all the fuss was about. The fast paced nature + the high skill ceiling really appealed to me in a way that very few other games, especially FPS which really seem to be more about camping or instasnipes in my experience, have. So I signed up, D/L'ed the plugin (is there a way to just straight up DL the game? I hate having to open FF to use play when I browse with chrome), and did the practice mode.

Suffice it to say I was bad. I didn't know how to strafe jump, my aim isn't that stellar, and perhaps most frustratingly the internet at my house is god awful, so I constantly lagged. Luckily the last part will be fixed in two days when I go to college, and i'm working on perfecting the other things. Granted, its only been one day, but I feel like i've improved quite a bit. I only did a few actual duels, where my average K/D was something like 3-20 lol. otherwise its been practice mode, learning the maps that are in the competitive pools, and learning the mechanics.

So, I figured I'd post here on TL, and see if anyone with a bit more QL experience would be interested in giving me some pointers, or if the TL community at large would be interested in forming a practice group. It'd be something informal and for fun, of course.

I'd be down to practice. I'm pretty scrub at timing items and map control, since most of my experience comes from CA. pm me your info if you get a practice group set up.

You HAVE to play out of the browser, sorry. Also, if you want, you can find some videos on youtube that'll show you how to strafe jump.

I started playing QL a bit after going to quakecon. I haven't been able to devote much time to it, but it's a lot of fun for what I've played. It does seem to have a pretty steep learning curve jumping from practice to actual play. But that's just like most other games I suppose... GL

Here's a pretty good tutorial on strafejumping:

Once you get that down, you should be able to just play games and improve slowly.

Make sure you don't jump straight into duel or TDM - CTF and CA are the most accessible game modes. Try to find servers that are skill matched, and stick with it! After playing for about a year I still wasn't able to bring my KD ratio above 1:1, so don't be ashamed :D

while getting your movement skills on, spend a few minutes each day on this: http://visualhud.pk69.com/timer.html

if you wanna play well in any gamemode, you gotta be able to time atleast 2 big items. usually it's armors and mh but in tdm you need to time weapons as well.

Im really surprised you are getting 3-20 in duels there must still be some newish people playing that gametype. I remember when I started q3 in 2006 or 2007 only diehard veterans still played the game and duels were 15 minutes and my score would be -4:42

I suggest playing alot of CA to learn the weapons and when to use them. Alot of newish people only know how to use the rocketlauncher and railgun but to become good at duel you need to make the most out of every weapon and the map.

Play some TDM/CA to learn the maps. For fun you can play 'Practice' against bots, in CA mode, without readying up, then just run around and getting used to aiming and movement. It is an easy way to warm up.
