Lately I've been wondering what's up with gamers today, this was pretty same back in the day but even more now.
People are getting very much worse mannered in general, at least the vocal part. Is it the new generation of gamers rising, or is it just that average gamer base is becoming younger every day? I've seen more and more raging every day, and people complaining how something is so "imbalanced" because they lost. I've seen this everywhere lately and it's not just those angry kids that have picked up the habit in xbox live or in PSN, but it's same with older folks (meaning people around 22+). People are acting like mentally slow kids, blaming others for their own mistakes, whining how something is that and that how people cheat if they are just better than you are.
Is it just the anonymity of internet? Or is there something wrong in today's community in general? Have people realyl forgot how to "behave" even, can't we control our selves anymore? What do you gain from venting to your opponent after you've lost, does it really boost your self image when you make others laugh at your behavior?
No matter how angry I am, I always try to show my courtesy to my opponent, in some form and I really appreciate those few who atleast greets you in the beginning of the game. I understand that one don't "gg" after the game, sometimes you're just so angry to your self and want to rage like german kid or then the game was so horrible. Personally I prefer to end my game with "gg", "wp" or "gg wp". But do you really have to say stuff like "bg" as in bad game" or "fuck you" or otherwise make your self look like a fool after the game?
I understand that one is frustrated after they got cheesed, but it's not opponent's fault that you couldn't defend it. So far I havn't seen single cheese that don't have some sort of defense. (No MC's cannon rushes ain't bullet proof either). There is no rule anywhere in game that stops you from using cheesy tactics so suck it up like a man (or woman) and go on.
And then to the game that got me write this in the first place. I was matched against a terran kid on NA server called MarauderKing. So as per usual I started the game with "gl hf!" and what I got as a reply? "u" "2" "faggot"... Seriously? What's up with that. Are you that tilted from before? Do you think someone picks up with such a petty insult? Why anyone would pick up that, it doesn't mean anything from coming some random little kid. Just report the player after the game
Game progressed pretty normally from there on, and he was wondering how he couldn't see probe in the back fog on Metalopolis, he went for pretty normal marine marauder mix with no medivacs which I found through my first little poking, where I made my 1st mistake. I clearly saw tech lab researching something and I didn't take it down. I think the game would've progressed way differently from there and I would've probably saved handful of units as well.
From there I pulled back, expanded and added some extra gateways, headed towards chargelots and sentries. Crushing his attack and progressed to deliver final nail in to his coffin. And what did I reseive from him? Some lines before he left the game. "fcuk" "fuck you" "You noob". That guy was seriously starting to tilt up there. And I guess he went to check my league/division, probably hoping that I was plat or something after slaying him quite decisively... But he found out something that upset him quite badly and started to message me and here's the lovely log:
MarauderKing: u ahve to be fucking kdiding me MarauderKing has reconnected. You: Why? MarauderKing: first o fall toss is just so easy to kill // if toss is so easy to kill why you lost? secondly ur silver You: And? MarauderKing: that waws just so lucky // Nope it wasn't omg u omg You: Haha MarauderKing: wow wo wwow wow wow some silver ass noob // I would love to have silver ass... Atleast it would be worth something who jsut bought the game // Oh I wish! won wow wow wow im gonan kill u //And as last resort real life threat? Really? You: Go check out http://justin.tv/rgnt and after that call it lucky MarauderKing: UR COOL fuck off // me? You were the one starting to went out... bie //Atleast he had courtesy to say bye (I assume) <3
So please, don't be like this kid but suck up your losses and celebrate your victories in private, don't make fool of your self infront of the opponent who just beat you.
And VOD to accompany this, had to do "commentary" as the original one has odd FPS lag.

"Hey guys I met a BM player today. From this I conclude all gamers are becoming assholes"
....
|
Oh no, someone was mean to me on the internet and I didn't like it. It was so much better in my day.
Get over it, it's the internet. Anonymity protects almost all of us in one sense or another from the backlash we would normally receive.
|
What if you tried to read through it instead
|
It's the anonymity of the internet + people that are like this are the most vocal. People who behave normally like you just aren't that vocal, but they probably think the same way as you.
I think it was always like this. I don't think gamers were more mannered a couple of years ago than they are now.

You won a game, your opponent didn't like that so they raged. BIG FUCKING DEAL.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. A gg is always nice but if you don't pls don't rage... just leave.
edit: i posted before i saw some of the reactions already on this thread.
I honestly find it quite revolting that people are so OK with it that everyone is an asshole on the internet. It's disgusting and messes up the community in general.
Being an asshole on the internet should be the exception not the rule, i think most of TL will agree with me seeing they all agree on the strict banning policy here on TL.

I don't feel people are becoming less mannered. I've been playing games online for 15 years and have always ran into plenty of people like this. It is common to blame "today's youth", but it generally isn't the case. People have been assholes since the beginning of time, and anonymity is nothing new.
I feel for you. I'm extremely nice to everyone almost all the time, especially in online games where I don't even know anything about the person, but realize that it has, does, and always will exist. It makes it much easier to deal with.

I was just like him when I was 12 years old when I just had lost at war2. Except that I wouldn't make that many typos.
What is the median age in silver league ? I would just ignore him. Who knows, in 6 years he may open a thread on TL complaining about people being so BM on bnet 3.0.

the Dagon Knight4000 Posts
I go out of my way to drop smiley faces in when I'm playing, especially when something bad happens to me. At my level, there isn't much lost when you're losing a few units when you're caught out of position if you take a second to type D: into the game chat.
Similarly, if you're a little ahead and someone does something clever (if you can find the second or two) just say it. Nothing brightens up a tough game for me like someone typing, "Fuck, good placement," or something similar, so I try to be that guy when I'm playing someone who's clearly a little behind.
Kills when the fucker eventually beats you back and types, "Noob."

Yeah, I know. In general I don't bother at all, and when I'm bored I may report some of these. And I've been playing online games ever since MUDs were the hottest thing. And there has always been this kind of behavior, but in much less amount. Now when there starts to be more mass in the gaming community, it starts to be more visible.
And couple first comments were good examples why no one bothers to even write anything of the subject
|
lol you'll always run into people like this. Makes for a good story I like reading the incoherent rage ^^.
Also, if you think sc2 is bad... you clearly didn't play wc3 at all... every single game on wc3 was BM I'd say sc2 is a lot calmer. lol
|
the average gamer is getting older every day.
|
i have personally noticed the decline in peoples attitude, though when i noticed it it was when i switched from sc:bw to sc2 (still play both but i play more sc2 now) back in bw i found BM like that to be a incredibly rare thing since so long as there was no cheese involved people generally accepted that they lost through their own mistakes
however in sc2 many people are afraid to come to the conclusion that they have lost though their own mistakes, in addition to that at the highest level there are people like idra (most obvious example imo) who rage about balance (maybe there is an imbalance, maybe there isnt...that isnt the point) because of people like idra raging right or not about it they convince others that their own play, which is nowhere near as refined or in general as good as idra's, is perfect and that they lose because of imbalance rather than their own skill, to which they respond very negatively towards their opponent who simply "picked the right race"
the simplest way to fix this is to somehow convince everyone that the game is balanced, at least balanced enough and that they need to analyze their games to find the real reason for their losses, that way they can accept that they are not as "pro" at the game than they think they are, leading them to be at least slightly more humble...however i doubt this will happen, at least for a long while
|
Yeah true, I wasn't playing WC3. I was one of those "asshole" player killers in L2 and UO
|
|
The fact of the matter is, in the internet, BM is very common. Finding people who actually show some courtesy online is a rarity, though it's not as rare when I play games like Starcraft 2 or Team Fortress 2.
|
What it has come down to is simply more people being exposed to gaming now then what it ever has been, being rude has been constant since the dawn of the Atari.
I remember playing Street Fighter II Turbo as a kid, versing other kids from school, friends even and them being Bad Mannered whenever I mopped the floor with them, I would only imagine that SC2 is no different, being a sore loser is hardly anything of the ordinary, but as Omni said, it makes for some interesting stories.
If even was mannered or polite all the time, sure it might make for a more pleasant experience, but where would be the stipulation, the stories, the revenge plot, I guess you could say it creates Heat, if its someone who ladder, big deal, but if you verse them again? its already tilted them because you beat them previously.
Now with the Anonymity of the Internet, regardless of a handle or username, there is no real fear factor for them treating the other player like junk, some players even gain a reputation for said Bad Manner, in some cases it builds character, in other cases it builds piles that weight 100 kureks.

And just to be clear, certain "trash talk" do belong in to any competitive sport, be it ice hockey or SC2. But keep it in the game not outside. You may have proper fight in the rink but you do compliment other guy after and possibly grab a beer with him after. And it's exactly same in the eSports.
DO trash talk in the game REMEMBER rivalries, but leave em in the game, and try to have some taste with it
