Anyway, off topic. Yeah, the BM I get thrown at me (and probably everyone else too has thrown at them) from time to time ranges from the "fuck off" into ragequit, or a more sophisticated balance complaint: "the reproduction rate of your army is simply too high to be balanced" .... into ragequit (this is much like saying: "after many hours spent researching the matter at hand, I have concluded you're an asshole") I believe one evening I had 3-4 ragequits/BM people in a row. It gets kind of depressing, and i'd much rather face a mannered person. I completely understand why people would become red-faced and angry after losing a match, especially if they feel they "played better" than their opponents, but imba/luck lost them the game. In fact, I have to admit i've ragequit a few times myself (I think everyone has), but most of the times I can force myself to type out gg before leaving, and often I wait for my opponent to gg back as well (just a thing I have, I wanna feel as if theres a certain amount of respect between the two players). The few times I ragequit though, I always feel bad afterwards and remember: "No gg, no skill" (WhiteRa) Guess that was all slightly off-topic as well ^_^ as for the gamers getting worse mannered, I think that's very untrue, if people had the internet back in the 70's with the same amount of anonymity they have today, I think people would of been just as bad mannered. Because obv theres no punishment for talking shit on the internet, no consequences etc. Anyways, that's my ramble done.

Are you sure it's not just Brood War nostalgia clouding your judgement? I found there to be just as much BM in Brood War as there is in Sc2, which isn't even that much, especially compared to games like TF2, counter strike, CoD, and Halo. The vast majority of ladder players I run into in Sc2 are nice, or at least silent, and will throw a gl hf. Brood War had it's fair share of powerful units, builds and abilities whose ability to make people rage rivaled that of the Protoss deathball and cloak banshee. Dt drops, recalls, carrier transitions, 12 nex, BBS, irradiate, hydra bust, proxy gates, cannon rush, etc seemed just as stupidly strong at times, not to mention the TvP matchup was literally impossible for Terran until you reached C rank and had the skill to execute everything that was demanded of you in the matchup. Also, don't forget iCCup was a fairly "elite" ladder in that it attracted people who were more serious about the game. If you ever played on bnet ladders like US East, the amount of idiocy and BM there was absolutely hilarious. As a side note, Idra's had a long history of complaining, and back in the BW days he was incredibly vocal about the TvP matchup. idra is an exception to the rule, one pro out of so many, he even admitted that he becomes overly attached to the game when he is losing which is a root cause of both his bm and his consistency of bm, most of the games i played were around the C level on iCCup though when i went to US East it was for BGH where the bm is most of the fun as BGH is genuinely imbalanced by positions :D the thing about the powerful things in bw was that they were all manageable, the ones you listed, DT drops (most T had turrets being constructed as part of their gameplan), recalls (this could backfire massively on the Protoss) 12nex would only give an advantage as a capable T player would know the abuses of this and be able to shut it down...the reason people complained about it is because they would just 2fact against it and lose, because the timing that makes a 2fact push strong would not be there...bbs if scouted could be held (assuming you were not being insanely over greedy) irradiate was needed to be strong, just imagine JD's ZvT without irradiate being around...no one would ever beat him...hydra busts are another thing that if scouted would be easy to hold, if not you lose same with proxy gates and cannon rushes....i will give you that TvP in bw was hard especially for the lower level of players who lack in the mechanical aspect of the game and would not be able to keep up in macro while pushing, and adding the vulture harass, laying mines...all that stuff, also i still play bw a bit on iCCup, nowhere near the level i was at my peak (as any race) but i rarely see BM on iCCup while in sc2 (where i play almost exclusively protoss) there is so much BM, at least 1-2 out of every 10 games has someone raging, (not a no-gg rage, but a "fuck you noob learn 2 play a real race" rage) I don't know why you wrote all that. My point was simply that Brood War had it's share of powerful strategies that were hard to scout, hard to respond to unless you played perfectly, or had a discrepancy in the ratio of skill required to execute vs skill required to defend. The Protoss deathball, cloak banshee, and 4 gate are all also managable if you play right so I don't see how they would induce more rage than BW's strats if we're following this logic. As for your point, I can't really argue it. Your perception is Sc2 players are more BM on average. I was just saying mine is they aren't.

With regard to gamers, i don't know if anybody of you reading this thread have ever played starseige tribes back in the late 90's / early 2000's but the premise of the game is CTF with jetpacks. The weapons, however, travel really slowly so lead shotting becomes critical. Even in the heat of round, if you get a nice mid air on them, when they die they will at least say "nice shot!" as a way to acknowledge your skill. Yet nowadays, i got called "hacker", "noob", "faggot" when i MA'ed them in tribes next the other day. NB that like the first reply to this thread, it doesn't entirely mean the entire gaming community, much less the north american society as a whole is represented by 1 such encounter but i think we can agree that as a whole, the amount of polite people we meet on the streets have been in decline unfortunately enough =[

The root problem is thus, it's not gamers alone so much as society as a whole is becoming more impatient and rude. Even the people that i pass on the train. Those people that have ear buds, but choose not to wear them, and instead blasts their music. An old lady asked the gentlemen to please turn it down or wear the ear buds only to be responded to by a "fuck you" and he made it louder. Most people seem nicer as I get older. Maybe this is my personal perception of events being distorted by time (which applies to everyone), but I feel people, as a whole, seem to be nicer than ever. I've been playing online games since 1996 or so, and I've been treated absolutely terribly (without provoking anyone) since I started. I remember playing AoE2, Warcraft 2, and Diablo 1 and people were absolutely TERRIBLE to others in those games. By saying "we can agree as a whole", you're assuming way too much about the experiences of others. I've lived in small towns, in big cities, and traveled quite a bit, and always found amazing people wherever I go. I've also found assholes. As the world (in the perception of those around me) "worsens", people seem to be getting nicer. A lot of people I speak to just care about their fellow man much more than in my earlier years. There are a lot of studies concerning this topic (not video game manners, but manners in life), and people ALWAYS want to blame the next generation, because it is literally the easiest thing you can do. I realize that some people (like yourself) may people society is weakening (in the manner described), but others have completely different experiences. ![]() Also I hope I got at least some to think how they're acting and hopefully be a bit more polite to each other. Oh and yeah as I think I wrote earlier, trash talk DO most definetly BELONG in to any competitive sport, but things like "you faggot" "fuck you" and so on ain't that. You should try to throw your opponent off balance instead of making thy self sound like angry German kid ![]()

In a team game the other day I got rolled but my allies did a super job. One guy on the opposing team was trashtalking the whole game. "LEAVE NOW KID UR WASTING MY TIME" was probably the nicest thing he had to say. After he lost he blocked all of us and then convoed us and smacked about random stuff. tl;dr? theres some assholes on the internet, always have been, always will be.

In SC, if you lose you can only really blame yourself if you lose (or balance -_-) so there is only really so much you can be BM about. In games like LoL, HoN or dota though, where you have teammates you can blame for your losses... It can get pretty ugly Also I don't think people are getting more BM. There's really no proof supporting this; one person being mean to you doesn't mean the internet as a whole is becoming more angry.

Now it's just possible for an 11 year old to safely shout whatever he can think of, which most of the time isn't very interesting. For whatever reason, I have some backwards type of respect for irl hate, because you at least are willing to say it so someone's face.
