Yo TLes!

Me and a good friend of mine are going to start DJing. We've been wanting to for some time now and now that she's finally back from London things are starting to pick up. Our idea is to play upbeat and dance friendly music from a variety of genres. Everything from Aretha Franklin to Boys Noize, from The Rolling Stones to Digitalism. You get the drill. We're also thinking about throwing in a Music quiz from time to time. We're already in contact with some venues so hopefully we will be on our way soon.

Now something that we haven't quite figured out is what we are going to call the club. We got nothing. Any ideas?

Also, do you guys know a good way to organize your music? We're going to have to burn a shit load if CD's and we don't really know how we are going to sort it.

Any other tips and tricks are greatly appreciated.

Peace.

Just call it: "Day[9]"
I think it actually makes for a nice club name.
Also, try interacting with your audience with something like an ipad or a lightweight laptop that you can show messages on and hold above your head.

Im not sure this is the best idea. Since neither of you seem to really know what you are doing? Are either of you actual professional DJ's with experience DJ'ing? Its a lot more than just hitting play.

But when you ask the questions you ask and say "we are going to just be burning cd's" it makes ti sound like you have absolutely no idea what you are really doing.

Sounds like you guys just like music and want to play music, but don't really have any idea what it involves to be a good DJ.

Not to mention you are making a HUGE jump going from amateur dj to nightclub owner/dj overnight...

GL tho, maybe i am misunderstanding, but for some reason your story makes no sense and sounds like a terrible investment =/.

Dude, there was a time when I tried to write fiction. The place where my stories unfolded was a nightclub called The Womb. In my fictitious universe The Womb was situated on a student campus of the Bartok University for Math and applied astronomy 24 km outside Budapest next to a Giant Telescope complex sponsored by Subaru. Rich japanese Yakuza would send their kids to study there and The Womb was the place for special entertainment and narcotics supplied by the owner which was also the English teacher who held his English class at 4 am at the Planetarium. Some students happen to be hazed at that hour and when a good looking female happened to be among them he would fuck her in front of everybody in astonishing and dirty fashion. Sometimes he would let Tanaka-san, the Boss's kid join in on the fun just so he can assure himself of no true rumors being spread. The Womb dude .. think about it. Where it all starts

no offense, but it seems like you dont really know anything about this and haven't really done much research... as someone else said it seems like you're going from amateur dj to nightclub owner in one leap

You could go with some cool swedish name, if the club is in sweden.

Also, do you guys know a good way to organize your music? We're going to have to burn a shit load if CDs and we don't really know how we are going to sort it.

I don't know much about being a DJ, but isn't most of that shit done digitally? Like with a laptop or something? CDs are something you'd see 20 years ago.

For the doubters: we know what we are doing. Laptop dj's = bronze league. The standard is pretty much CDJ's from Pioneer. If you are really pro you use vinyl, or this shit that lets you play mp3 on vinyl. CD's are fine though.

My friend does have experience DJing. I myself have been playing around at home with virtual dj and a midi-controller so I can beat match decently. Song transitions isn't really a big deal when you are playing such varied music.

So not true. Even if you are playing a wide variety of music the songs need to flow into eachother. If you don't do this you'll never achieve a relation with your audience. If your audience isn't getting into a groove they won''t enjoy themselves and won't come back.

Also I am afraid you'll need to make some sort of database with all your songs and on which CD they are. Best way to do this is still an Excel database I think. Unless there are so DJ specific tools that automatically read the song info / BPM etc.

Hearing you talk about it you are not coming over as really knowing what you are doing but hopefully that's just the way you are expressing yourself.

Last but not least: You can still import a lot of new music on vinyl from Italy.

That confuses me too. DJing and club ownership are two completely different things @_@
Unless OP means organizing some sort of club event where he's DJing.

That being said, I'm sad that there's still so much vinyl elitism Luckily I've played at venues where people don't give a fuck what you perform with as long as the end product is awesome (I'm a controller guy myself, Denon MC6000 user).

Back on track:
Womb is the name of a famous club in Japan
If we're looking for something SC-related, I personally find Nexus or Gateway pretty slick :D

If it's an actual club rather than a DJ set you perform at different places then call it Nexus ^^

So hold on, you are starting a club or dj career? I Seriously think you might know how to spin cd's but do you know anything about running a club?

I'm currently working on a restaurant business plan, and being a restaurant / pub / club owner is not as easy as it seems... Needs good knowledge of accounting / cash flow management / legal shit / staff management / all the taxes stuffs etc.

I don't know much about DJing, but I've seen plenty of DJs in very successful clubs having all their music on their laptops.

What I meant when I said it wasn't a big deal is that when you playing varied music, song transitions become really easy. It's not like when you're playing dubstep or whatever when you HAVE to beat match, HAVE to have perfect timing or it sounds like shit. You can use easy transitions and it still sounds ok.
