It's finally summer break and I'm trying to get back into videogames but its been so hot outside that playing on my desktop hasn't really been an option. What are some of the best games to play on the PS2 (and I suppose PS1 as long as they've aged well)? The games I've played so far are:
Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy Tactics
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy XII Odin Sphere Shadow of the Colossus Persona 3 FES Star Ocean 3 Xenosaga Episode I
The games I've been recommended or plan on playing are:
Disgaea 2 Dragon Quest VIII Suikoden III God of War Metal Gear Solid series (I haven't played the first one though) Persona 4 Xenosaga Episodes II and III
I'm not really excited to play any of these games so I'm looking for something different. I'll pretty much enjoy any genre of game except shooters can sometimes be frustrating on a console controller. I'll edit in all the recommended game below for future reference.

Final Fantasy IX and X are my all time favorites. IX for the story, characters, and nostalgic setting, and X for the world, visuals, and near-flawless gameplay. (Both soundtracks are also the highlight of Nobuo Uematsu's career.) I've played almost no other PS1/2 games other than FF7.
My friend had Xenosaga and the first one is pretty epic. I don't know anything about the other installments. But anyways, that's my 2 cents.

Edit: Oops, mods can you get rid of this please?
|
I'm curious as to why you're not excited about Persona 4 after playing the 3th ^_^ You should definitely try Okami though, it's similar to the Legend of Zelda series.
|
The Yakuza series great. It's a mix up of a brawler, a sandbox game (GTA), and RPG. It also has one of the more involving plots that I've seen in a long time. It's a pretty huge time sink, though, as it features cutscenes that remind me of MGS in terms of length, and the voice acting in the first game is pretty hilarious (though the second one makes up for it with non-dubbed Japanese voiceover). Only 1 and 2 are available on the PS2. The rest are on the PS3.
And as Capsize mentioned, Okami is also good fun.

Personally I loved Tekken, Dragonball series and Jak and dexter series .
|
No Soul Nomad on any of these lists, zzzz. Best game on PS2 that nobody played. It's by the same people that did Disgaea, and is very similar to the Ogre Battle series of games.
|
Final Fantasy X was my favourite PS2 game but you've already got that on your list so.. Definitely try the Jak and Daxter games, they're a lot of fun. Star Wars: Battlefront was great too...not much story but it's got pretty fun gameplay, especially if you got friends to play it with ^^

Wipeout Fusion is the best futuristic race game. Amazing speed, tracks, soundtrack, nice balanced weapons (lol mario kart wii), and it takes really long to beat that games (survival mode is so hard)

First great PS2 games that come to mind when thinking of PS2? Zone of the Enders (1, 2) and God Hand.
|
Both Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss are available for the PS2. And they are amazing.
|
You already mentioned a lot of games that are quite good. But some more that I liked are:
- Drakengard Not so well known game but very fun. Also crazy storyline. Collect weapons, destroy hordes of enemies, ride on a fire spewing dragon. Also in what game do you get the chance to shoot babies (yes babies) out of the sky?
- Okami Needs no further explanation
- Shinobido - Way of the Ninja Nice stealth game with some other nice aspects (Building your home, defending it from intruders, alchemy and so on)

Legaia 2 : Dual Saga
Shadow Hearts 1 2 and 3
Grandia 2 and 3
Dark Cloud 1 + 2
.hack//infection, mutation, outbreak, quarantine

Puzzle fighter Street fighter 3rd strike Metal slug series Devil May Cry series GTA
|

whats wrong with persona 3 fes

Way, way too many good/great PS2 games to be given enough credit for in this thread, yet the only JRPG I've ever liked (and I do mean ever) was Disgaea on PS2 and even then it didn't grab my fancy much. I played all the standard stuff like the Jak series, some Ratchet and clank, Shadow of the colossus and Tekken tag are my favs!
|
Ratchet and Clank series: Light hearted and funny but not just a kids game. Highly suggest this if you're just looking to chill but also follow a good story.
Okami: Super pretty game with unique gameplay.
Devil May Cry series: Just straight BA.

Persona 4 is a really good game. Highly recommended. The "Tales of" series was also really good according to my friends.
Okami was very meh. I actually found it quite boring and it gave me lots of bad headaches.

Killzone! Best FPS on PS2 It is easy once you know how to play though and the ending is lack luster, but still a fun game.

Shadow of the Colosuss was indeed one of the greatest games I ever played, I love that game, I still play it on my PS3 from time to time.

heres my entire collection www.backloggery.com/neo_sporin
I am a HUGE fan of Persona 3 and 4, for JRPG fans if you haven't gotten around to them you need to as they will blow your fucking mind with their uniqueness and changes to the genre. Since you have played 3 you must play 4, its an improvement on almost every level.
I personally dont recommend DQ8 that much, just something about it didnt really work
Research any Shin Megami Tensei RPG for ps2, almost all of them are universally revered.
I also ssecond the recommendations of the metal gear solid series, you can still find MGS1 and play it in a ps2, optionally be like my gf and just watch the entirety of it on youtube and then jump into MGS2. MGS3 though is where the series really hits its stride.
Shadow Hearts 1 was pretty meh, but the 2nd one is supposed to be a vast improvement. I have it, just havnt gotten around to it.

Yes all of the above but to add some spice. How did you feel about oni if you played it.

FFX I loved that game so much!
Other than that Rachet and Clank was pretty bad ass as well as Killzone 1,
My favorite all time game on the Ps2 tho, Timesplitters. Such a shame the company went bust when making the next one.

I think its mostly because I got half way through The Answer and stopped because I wasn't enjoying it at all. Also not having the compendium messed me up multiple times, but everyone is saying that Persona 4 is awesome so I'll have to go pick it up. I'll also have to get Okami too since most people enjoyed it a lot.

But it cleared up the ending to the journey a bit (im not saying this is a good thing, I thought the ending to the journey was awesome).
Persona 4 though, twas awesome. I grinded out 85 hours on it in 1.5-2 weeks. I wish Chie was a real person....

War of the Monsters. That game was awesome.

I'm a total RPG whore, so here's what I demand you play. (No, they're not suggestions. They're orders.) I'll give the name of the game / series, and a sentence overview of its qualities.
- AR Tonelico (mediocre combat system and graphics balanced by excellent character development and plot)
- Tales of the Abyss (amazing real-time combat system, awesome story and likable characters)
- Persona 3 (simply one of the best PS2 RPGs ever made; incredible music and characters)
- Mana Khemia (being a "school" based game may be a downside, but one of the best OSTs of any game, ever, and great characters / story)
- Tales of Legendia (considered (unfairly?) the black sheep of the Tales series, but a great game in its own right, despite the devolved combat system)
- Grandia 2 (Another one of the best PS2 RPGs around; the soundtrack alone is worth it)
Aside from RPGs, I would recommend Silent Hill 2 (if you're into scary games), Burnout 3: Takedown (best racing game I've ever played), Metal Gear Solid (especially Snake Eater / Subsistence), and SSX Tricky (snowboarding made even more awesome).
|
+1 for the Tales of... series and the .hack games. Since you played Persona 3, I guess 4 is something for you. I dropped P3 after around 90 minutes because I couldn't stand the bs anymore. They pretty much killed the series and revived it in order to attract teens, girls etc -_- Ah, the Suikoden games are pretty good as well.
|
I recommend getting Parasite Eve 2, one of the best games i played on ps2.
edit - man i forgot its been so long its for playstation 1 lol
