Like a lot of fellow TLers I was watching TL Attack with Sheth yesterday and was quite interested in the SC2BW maps they played. The last time I played BW multiplayer was about 9-10 years ago and while I had fond memories of stomping my brother and a few other people on LAN parties, I didn't remember much else about it anymore. I therefore took the opportunity to play a few rounds of SC2BW, which weren't very successful but reminded me of how the challenge provided by the 12-unit selection limit actually. :p
I decided that I should compare it to BW, which I quickly downloaded from the iCCup website. I thought: "Well, I'm a Diamond player in SC2, so it shouldn't be too hard to play a little against the AI. I'll try the new builds that came into existence long after I stopped playing BW..."
I was a fool. :p
I decided on Terran as my first race and picked Protoss as opponent, read the 1rax FE TvP build from Liquipedia, executed it (though a little poorly) and got immediately stomped by what about 8 Zealots swarming into my base.
gg. :p
In game 2 I got the hang of basic macro (producing workers, units, etc.), only to get nearly stomped by Zealots again. I microed a few Vultures and managed to barely hold them off and move out into a siege contain of the Protoss base, after which I started practicing macro again... Very unsuccessfully, as the 11k minerals at the end of the game proved :p
Well, with a maxed mech army I was easily able to crush the Protoss defenses, so at least it wasn't too humiliating :p
At least i learned a few things: 1. Unit control in BroodWar is different from SC. It'll take a lot of practice before I master this. 2. Moving two tanks through a choke by simply telling them to is impossible. Pathing isn't as spoonfed as in SC2. Like I said in point 1 I will need to practice this into mastery, and have attained a new found respect, no, reverence for players that manage to control their units well. 3. SCVs are actually extremely fast. :p 4. Macroing properly is extremely difficult and I have realised how mechanics greatly benefit a superior player. I like the challenge this provides. 5. The computer's Zealots attacks caught me off guard. I will need to work on scouting better as well as learning how to properly adapt to my opponent's strategies.
I plan on playing around a bit more, just for the nostalgia, the Unit AI that requires precision and focus makes it a very challenging experience. The lack of Auto-Mining or Multi-Building-Selection doesn't bother me much, I still managed to be far oversaturated on 3 bases :p
It was a nice excursion into history, I think I will play some more in order to properly assess SC2's predecessor. Naturally I realise I am in no way bound to choose and play either game exclusively.
:p

I see what you did there.
That said, to make this worthwhile...
The first time I ever played against the computer I tried to make Ghosts to fend off Hydraling, because I figured "the more expensive this unit is, the more badass it is", which is true, but only to a certain extent.

Wow. The editing of this piece was phenomenal. I especially liked the usage of emoticon images to let the reader know how the author was feeling. I really connected with this work.
Five stars. More please.

Oh! Silly Australians mocking German nubs! Racially charged fun!

I too was deeply disappointed when I played sc:bw after sc2. I was expecting the game to play itself like sc2 so I could sit there and watch the battles while jerking off to my sick pull back weak units micro but the game has the AUDACITY to expect me to actually have to do something.
The nerve.

My head hurts trying to get it, I know Kiante plays BW so what is he talking about ><
Edit: nvm saw the other blog haha, I'm so senile...

5 stars for this one.
1 star for the other one.

Lol Kiante you should be the blog section's editor.
This is the best mentality for a SC2 player approaching BW .
|
Hmm, can someone explain what's this all about?
|
Kiante trolling? Yeah, he must be, unless there's another Australian Kiante.

Do not mock Germans on the internet. Thats how world war 1 started.

Threads like these is what makes TL so great. <3

If you use the probes of the Prodaktors (aliens with long heads) to build structures, you can move them after the structures started to warp in, unlike with other races. I hope this will improve your strategies!

Rated this two stars before I knew what it was referring to.
Five stars imho!
