say i read about a case of a man who killed a woman while driving and got away with it, hiding the evidence, and the 5 year limit on the statute of limitations let up.

this man was brought up on charges 5+x years after the incident because police were finally able to figure out what happened, but because of the statute of limitations the case was dismissed.

lets also assume this man is, in general, not a good person in other major areas in his life.

now lets also assume that through completely legal and public means, i happened to find this fictional man's phone number and home address.

if i were to write a completely vague, non-threatening letter to said man to help him reflect on his life...how would it write so that even if it was tracked to me (it wont be) there would be nothing objectionable about it?

is it right of me to write this letter?

what are the consequences and potential ramifications of said letter to said fictional man?

well it's more like manslaughter than murder since murder has no stature of limitations in the US

he won't change if he does read the letter and he will probably not read the whole letter, he will then use the letter to wipe his ass after a sloppy poop. I do not think it is worth writing the letter.

If you're ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that its the same guy and ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that you're not putting yourself or your close ones in any danger by doing this, give him hell. Shame him in the community. Whatever.

I've had friends affected by hit-and-runners, and I have no sympathy at all for them if they dodge their responsibility because it'll all seem like a bad dream to them in the morning, no regards whatsoever for the however-many lives they have mulched into the ground.

Light a bag of poop and leave it on his doorstep.

It's going to do as much practical good as a letter will.

this fictional man is definitely the one I envisioned beyond doubt

while the potential effects of poop can never be overestimated, I don't have the ability to do that. I don't think you don't give enough respect to the effect words can have on people

I think the only case in which your letter would change anything in that mans life was if he already changed bacause his conscious made him. In case killing a person did not alter him, your letter won't achieve any more reaction to the incident in him.

Because of that I'd advise you not to contact said hypothetical man, but from my personal understansing there would be no legal grounds against such a letter. If you feel any moral obligationa to send that letter, you should send it i think.

Sry for any instances of horrible english and no capitalization, this was written on my phone

Man slaughter would be different...
Say like if he accidentally ran over a person. This would be manslaughter.
If he ran them over with intent in the heat of anger. This would be voluntary man slaughter.
Compared to killing with intent and planing the murder. This would be first degree murder.
Killing with intent and not having it planed prior. This would be second degree murder. (best example is firing a gun at someone and missing target killing a different person.)

It is impossible to determine the appropriate charge without the proper information and evidence.

If he accidentally did it, or even intentionally he could be feeling the guilt. A letter could get to him, but wouldn't have a life changing impact if he already lives with the guilt. If he planed the murder a letter could have no effect. This letter could possibly attract the wrong attention to you too.

I suppose a letter could be written, but it would take allot of thought and edits to have the correct wording to get the point across without attracting the wrong attention. He may even write back.

After all if he did it by accident and covered it up he has to live with himself. No one wants to have to do jail time. Everyone panics and has there morals. Some peoples morals are just stronger.

If its a personal matter a lawyer could help fight for the cause.

Sorry, missed this on the first go-round:

If this means you don't know the victim, give the address to someone who does (preferably her family). It's their choice about how to treat the man.

If he's fine living with the guilt of killing someone, what possible difference could any letter you write make?

Writing this letter could only be to assuage your anger, can't see it making any difference in his life.

Like I said, all you can do is try and shame him publicly...the police can't really help but I bet they'd look the other way if a bunch of people showed up at his front door with picket signs that say "murderer!" or suchlike.

Maybe you should mind your own business and not butt in on someone else's. If its only a case you read about and the statute is already up, why bother? You're also assuming he was a bad person. I'm sure a good person might get scared if they hit someone and drive off cause they're afraid.

You said it was completely hypothetical but when you say THAT, it makes me think, "huh?" Just be careful with yourself...

You should take to thought what I posted on the first page before writing a letter. Determining what kind of crime that was committed will help you decide if its a good idea or not.
After all you don't want to tick off a possible murderer. He could feel threatened if the victim was close to you.

If it involves you, contacting a lawyer and not writing the letter would be the best course of action.
