If you didn't know, I used to be quite involved in the competitive Pokemon community called Smogon. If you're familiar with Smogon at all, there were a lot of goods and bads about it -- the goods being that there are a lot of talented people, but the bads were that there was a lot of red tape, politics, and more drama than you could imagine (although some of the drama was caused by me being angry at the red tape).

About 18 months ago, me and two other friends started talking about a new way of organizing competitive Pokemon information. The idea was to remove as much red tape as possible and allow the community to filter out what was relevant and what is not. Another thing was that we wanted Pokemon to be a more creative game, not just limited by a few tiers that were official, and we wanted to put more emphasis on that aspect.

After 18 months, my friend finally pulled through. The site launched three days ago. The site is called WishMKR, after the OT of the Jirachi handed out by Nintendo.

http://www.wishmkr.com/

The site is still in beta pages, but if you have any interest in competitive Pokemon, or is currently involved in competitive Pokemon, I would appreciate it if you checked it out, and if have the time, there's a ton of ways you can help out in the site. The site is still adding features since it was coded entirely from scratch, even the forums. Even finding bugs, suggestions, or even contributing to the main site would all be really nice things you could do! The PokeDex is based on the 5th Generation (Black and White), and there are a ton of sets being added to the site every day!

I'll probably be involved figuring out what kind of achievements are good, and crunching statistics for the site and such. I'll also be borrowing a lot of awesome ideas that TeamLiquid and its users have proven that they work and bringing it into that site

I don't really understand what the goal is. What makes this different from bulbapedia, pokemon online, and smogon? I think I'm missing the point =S

idk, I haven't been up to date in competitive pokemon since Gen 4 came out.

my only interaction with Pokemon is envying my classmate's shiny Charizard beside the sandbox in grade 7. That means what you are saying makes zero sense to me, but at least we get good pokemon progamer analogies!

So, as a complete noob shit, can i learn competitive pokemon?

Note: I am good at outpredicting my opponent and reacting to strategies. Of course this happens when I know how to react.

Bulbapedia is not competitively geared. Pokemon Online's main focus is a simulator -- not about collecting the latest sets etc (also, coyotte508 is also on board with us, we're trying to figure out a way of integrating PO and WishMKR atm).

The differences with Smogon is that Smogon convoluted themselves with red tape. If you look at their sets, they are pages and pages long. We concentrate on simplicity, and to get rid of all the complications Smogon had set up over the years that makes getting things done REALLY hard to do there.

Yes, you can. It's just a real bitch to properly train your Pokemon.
I have 999:59 hours on my Pearl and over 500 hours on Platinum if some old Smogon builds and variations I made myself.

The hardest part to learn about Pokemon is properly IV and EV training. Movesets and everything else is really easy considering you can figure the logic of Pokemon with a bit of research and reading!

Competitive Pokemon is all about mind games and prediction in my opinion. Very, very nerve-wrecking @__@

Thanks for the site by the way! I used to use Serebii.net a lot for all general information previously.

Interesting website! I haven't played since 4th generation, but I did remember that Smogon policy was sorta bloated and slow. I felt that you couldn't really make a difference unless you were a respected member. So I sorta agree with you in that department.

I registered an account in case I ever get back into Black/White. By the way, who were you on Smogon? I recognize some usernames on the Wishmkr forum from Smogon.

If you guys understood competitive Pokemon, I could make even better analogies!

It's not a hard game to pick up. I picked up competitive Pokemon in about a month or so 2+ years ago, and I was quite decent. I didn't play that long though.

I haven't played since then so I'm probably a very bad person to ask how the game is currently. But a lot of really good battlers are in the community, and I'm sure it won't be a problem for people to answer your questions about the game

cute joke :D

Hmm, that's the grindiest part for sure. I remember back when D/P first came out I would just use my feet to press up and down on my DS to hatch eggs while I did school work so I can get pokemon with good IVs T_T

Thanks for the site by the way! I used to use Serebii.net a lot for all general information previously.

Hopefully it's easier to use than Serebii's site! If you do have any suggestions on what we should add and things related to organizations, let me know

Haha, I was Tangerine on Smogon

And yes, nearly every user on WishMKR atm are also on Smogon. A lot of them was on board on the project from the start and helped put everything together

Ok, cool, so this is the competitive pokemon version of liquipedia? It took me a while to find where the movesets actually were ._.

Haha, you can think of it that way. Wikipedia was definitely what gave us the confidence to let people just add stuff directly to the site and letting people vote on things. It's not quite that fluid yet, but it'll get to that level eventually i hope!

Hmm, I guess the issue with the movesets is that they kind of follow the Smogon format -- we're fixing the front page etc soon so I think that'll give better pointers on how to get to the movesets.

too bad im not into it anymore but this looks pretty xD

I also started 4th generation. It was amusing while it lasted, for sure

Awesome. I was playing competitively during R/S/E generation and was on Smogon. The community there is disappointing.

I'll check it out. Maybe with Black and White I'll get back into it.

Good looking site. I tried reading some of the stuff on there and I was COMPLETELY lost. Guess my Red/Blue expertise is a little dated. My only question is this: Is Zapdos (my favorite) still awesome?

has anyone here completed the platinum pokedex? i have like over 400 hours trying to "catch them all" but the trade system online in plat is fucking stupid.. like you actually have to know people personally to trade with them..wtf? im 28 fucking years old. i dont know anyone that plays pokemon that i can trade with. so stupid. its not like i can go to some elementary school and stand around the playground after school and trade pokemon with kids. im so disapoint. pokemon is my fav game.
i have currently around 350 pokermon caught by myself and trades on gts.. but it seems impossible to complete without having people you know to hook you up with rare shit like mew etc.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but is there a way to get into competitive Pokemon without the pain of breeding/IV/EV? Premade Pokemon or something?

I love Pokemon, but the idea of grinding, grinding specific Pokemon to increase EV makes me cringe a little.

I love Scizor, except I played before Platinum came out. I ran two variants -- a specially defensive variant, and a Sword Dance Quick Attack version. Bullet Punch apparently made him super awesome though :O

500 new pokemon since then, with various new moves, 2 additional types, introduction of items and abilities, the physical/special split... yeah, a lot of stuff happened since the good old RB days.

Zapdos was pretty damn good as of the 4th Gen, I don't know how Zapdos stands in the 5th generation, however.

Most people play on a simulator like Pokemon Online. Simulators are actually preferred, since Nintendo didn't do a great job with the 4th Generation Wireless play. Dunno if things changed in the 5th generation.

Haha, sorry, I had no idea how to respond to it since I didn't play Pokemon Platinum. I did finish the Pokedex in my Pearl version though, although it involved trading with people who did glitches in the early DP versions to get darkrai and shaymin. I don't think I had arceus though.

That's another problem lol, I don't control my home router's settings, it's WPA passworded atm and the regular DS requires WEP :\.

Read somewhere that you can use WPA with DSi? If that's the case I might go get one of those soonish, want to do online stuff with Black and White, couple of friends are hyped to play it

I played the games when I was young, never competitively. I find this (like most other competitive video games) to be quite interesting. I've probably spent a combined 10 hours over the past two years looking at this stuff(smogon/comentated youtube battles/ect). From an outsider prospective, it is significantly easier to navigate, and put together quite nicely. (I don't like the fact that there are a lot of pokemon with no entries, but considering how many there are, its not surprising that there is no strategy for using a pidgeot)

I find it funny that almost every entry talk about how that moveset will counter either Ferrothorn or skarmory. Those two must be the shit.

This looks so interesting... I never knew such things existed. I'd love to play those pokémon tournaments.

However, if I did not misread, aren't the tournaments in that site only for Nintendo DS pokémon generations? I have this retro thing with pokémon and will never be using pokémon from further generations than the R/S/E one...

When americans think of koreans they think of starcraft when koreans think of americans they think of pokemon. And by koreans I mean koreans who grew up in Korea. I just find it funny because I was talking with a friend and he was telling me how he thought his roommate was nice but he just found it weird he played pokemon lol. And he was telling me how it seems pokemon is really popular in America. Its funny too because koreans do a lot more things that I would consider more "immature" than pokemon.

Not trying to be offensive at all; just curious...

How much politics can be involved with a Pokemon website (Smogon)? I'm not understanding exactly what you are saying by this, since you are making it seem like it's the Cold War all over again. Do you mean politics within the actual website organizational structure or some outside influential issues (sponsorships, litigation, etc.)?

As a member of many forums, I don't think I've ever encountered this type of politics, even amongst the most relevant forum types (i.e. I'm a member of a few firearms forums). I apologize as you answering this question probably won't ever be fruitful as my Pokemon days are far behind me but I think some others would be curious to know as well.

You know that invite-only SC2 strategy forum that has been suggested multiple times? Think that, and that the only way to be heard at all in the community is to post in there, and the only way to post in there is to be friends with half the mods and enemies with none.

I remember you tangerine!

I like the idea of this site, but some of the current sets are really bad, and having ANYONE up vote or down vote a set seems like a sketchy idea seeing as there are tons of really bad players who made really bad sets really popular.

Poker involves a lot of luck too. Doesn't mean that it's necessarily not worthwhile.

Yeah, for me Pokemon isn't worthwhile. You take such a long time to form a strategy or make a common prediction only to be ruined by a critical hit, that's not very effective in the first place, or the chance of paralysis happening 3 times in a row. Poker is a different story if you play for money, whether it's worthwhile is a matter of opinion.

I'm currently banned on Smogon because I got fed up with the site owner and had a skirmish with him. Basically, the site owner was the only one with root access on the server, except the site owner stopped doing anything for the site about, 3+ years ago. Few of the admins who were doing coding related work got into a lot of bottlenecks with it because they need full access to do certain things (in fact they didn't even have write access into some of the directories related to the site), which meant waiting for the owner every time in order to get things done. Few of the admins got really annoyed with it and mentioned this to the owner and asked for access many times and he would just change the subject and pretend he never heard the request.

So basically I told him to stop being a paranoid idiot and give them root access and I pretty much told him that if he wants to be gone then he should just be gone for good instead of always hovering around claiming that "anything that changes in the site must go through me" and trying to be the final authority on the matter -- an attitude that stressed the staff a lot cause there would be lots of discussions about what happens in the site and you would get to the end of the matter but no one would be able to do it because the owner never made up his mind about it on the issue.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I like the idea of this site, but some of the current sets are really bad, and having ANYONE up vote or down vote a set seems like a sketchy idea seeing as there are tons of really bad players who made really bad sets really popular.

From an outsider prospective, it is significantly easier to navigate, and put together quite nicely. (I don't like the fact that there are a lot of pokemon with no entries, but considering how many there are, its not surprising that there is no strategy for using a pidgeot)

The sets may not be perfect now but as time goes by and more people join and voice their opinion, it will reach efficiency. The site literally opened like 3+ days ago -- we're actually surprised that there are this many sets to begin with.

don't borrow smogon's tier list and you're set imo

However, if I did not misread, aren't the tournaments in that site only for Nintendo DS pokémon generations? I have this retro thing with pokémon and will never be using pokémon from further generations than the R/S/E one...

You can start an RSE tournament if you want. There are quite a number of people like you, actually, and I believe Pokemon Online supports RSE.

Pokemon Online supports all generations, it's very good and well made.

I just don't have the willpower to build teams
