The title is probably misleading, so let me clear things up:
Kids: 17 years old or younger.
Adults: 18 years old and above

So I've been playing a lot of Broodwar and SC2 lately, and I've noticed something very interesting. Honestly, this will be based on my own experiences, so take my theories as lightly as possible.

Here goes:

I've noticed most Adults are extremely good at theorycrafting and strategizing. To be honest, 90% of the adults I play against LOVE theorycrafting.

Most of the time they'd go: "Unit X works really well vs unit X, I wonder if a 3:2 ratio blah blah"
or
"At around 6:30 timing you'd be at xx supply vs his xx supply" etc

I'll be honest. I am unable to construct a BO or overall game scheme based on how I play. I basically just make stuff up as a I go along, or play in the way I "feel" is best in a certain point in time in the game.

For example, when I do timing attacks, I just seem to "do them". I don't know when the timing windows are, but I just seem to "feel them" and abuse them when I "feel" like the time is right.

Most if not all of the "kids" where I play pretty much play the same way. And most of the time, we kids ROFLstomp the older guys who seem to know much more about the games.

Why do you think this is so? Has anyone else noticed this? I'm open to criticisms/violent reactions and such.

TL;DR Many adults are great at strategizing BUT: many of them are unable to actually implement these strategies. Kids on the other hand, play by feel.

How is it that you know the ages of everyone you play? And if they tell you, how do you know they're telling the truth?

I play in a LAN cafe, so I meet all the players I play with. I'm basing this off my experiences in an environment where people actually know each other.

NOT one damn human adult has ever been created - for ONLY babies are CREATED - and every adult has within them the LIFE given by children who DIE to give-up their lives to their parent image - so their mom or Dad can live. Adults are EVIL to deny they evolved from children - and claim their adult EGO image is a god likeness.

first thing i thought of

on topic, i think this could be the case because adults are more influenced than children by the reasoning part of the brain and less so by their hormones. At least i think i heard that once. my psychology-major house mate would know, i'll edit if i ask him.

I'm 22 and I play completely by feel. Of course I'm only low rank masters so I'm not that good, but I feel like I got there based purely on just "winging it"

Sorry, I couldn't understand what you mean

I'm not saying only kids play by feel, it's just that I've noticed a lot of adults are capable of putting into words/strategies their analysis of the game's mechanics.

Do you guys think it has something to do with mental maturity? lol

I think it has to do with the amount of time available you have to practice.
Kids have more time to practice. Probably as simple as that.

Probably... I do recall pro Korean players saying that what kids lack in experience and expertise, they make up for in speed [apm]. Similar to how older players get left behind to the supposedly faster younger generation.

I play completely by feel, I have no set build orders based on my supply, I don't use the in-game timer at all, I'm 21, and I'm in high masters.

Your theory is incorrect.

Unranked. lol. That probably explains much of the stomping.
I think I might have confused you a bit :/

I meant "No definite BO", or somewhere along the lines of "I know BOs but I refuse to follow them exactly how Liquipedia tells people to". Better?

As I said above, take my theories lightly. Coming from a 15 year old, I doubt any of my "theories" would hold that much substance without proper data to back them up.

Hmmm one thing to back you up would be that in BW the younger players tend to be the more dominant players because their hand speed is greater, however I dont see that as an issue in SC2 since u dont need high APM to be good at the game.

I'm 27 and play the same way. I've actually told people I was worried about my play style because its almost 100% reactionary, and I never really had a solid build order. I havent played since the last patch came out (my desk broke ), but I was mid/low diamond when I did.

I can't commit enough time to this game to use "solid" build orders (practice them mostly) and make up a lot of stuff on my own. I will usually have a strong opening then my mid and late game are completely shooting from the hip. I am 25 years old. (When I get time to practice I tend to get good build orders going(I am aware you need them but I just don't play this game competivley enough))

by not following a solid build order you are bottlenecking yourself. You should either follow a build order or try to optimize a build order. If you play freestyle you will hit a dead end somewhere. You might be roflstomping noobs now because the game is new, but as things settle down, you will get crushed by almost everybody.

Look at BW. You can't win games even at the D ranks if you don't have a solid BO

Why dont you ask any good player (as in an sc2 player who actually wins or goes far in tournaments) if they follow and develop build orders. Maybe your one of the best of the noobs but that still makes you among the noobs.

Yeah I should have clarified in my post that I'm pretty much the same way. I have a build I generally follow up to my cyber core but after that its almost completely reactionary.

Depends what you consider a "solid BO". I hit c- before ever looking at a concrete BO, I just knew that in zvt, get 3 hatches and make mutas->lurkers->hive...Same for other MUs, I freestyled for a long time..

Someone's hella jelly.

I think it's safe to say that amongst top players, all are capable of playing intuitively. But a major factor separating the good from the best is based a lot on strong and diverse openings as well as knowledge of specific timings throughout each matchup

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I've always liked theorycraft better even when the game just came out. It might have to do with the fact that my mom only let me play for an hour but I could browse the web for longer, so I ended up theorycrafting most of the time.

edit: but since I play random I wing it anyways

Well I've had a huge thing for build orders since I was 15 so maybe I'm an anomaly.
But seriously, how can you not like having everything planned out so that like 10 minutes in you've got exactly 0 gas and everything you need going perfectly? Admittedly, I haven't been able to enjoy build orders in SC2 as much as they aren't nearly as clean yet
I miss knowing 3hat spire 5 hat hydra up to 80 supply in like 3 different variations, despite being a protoss player (I had a crush on that build <3)

To put it (incredibly) bluntly, kids are stupid, so they cannot theorycraft and whatnot. They do however have better pattern recognition skills so they can play more by instinct and feel. You obviously need both of these if you want to be the best, and thats the reason why you don't have 14 year old champions at mental sports (chess, etc).

I think it really depends on how the person developed as a player. If all through their childhood until say age 17 they played Starcraft as though it was Simcity, and then realized at age 18 the proper way to play, then of course the adult will be worse than some kids.

However, if the kid gets a grasp of major fundamentals early on in life, then they will definitely develop into a beastly player as an adult. Learning how to macro well during high school, middle school, or heck even elementary school will instill a firm understanding of mechanics that will trump any theorycrafting made by any adult.

Sounds like a whole hell of a lot of theory, with no actual proof to back it up. Oh the irony.

I can't do theorycrafting. I don't even have proper build order, I just do random stuff here and there.

This thread is a poorly argued opinion. It stereotypes pretty hard.

I've got a few build orders to open/counter specific builds based heavily on my scouting information. Once the scout(s) see what is going on from the enemy, then I try and respond accordingly. My build order doesn't really go past 21 if even that.

In my opinion, it depends on people. Adults in general are studying in tertiary or already working. They tend to derive their experience and turn it into a numerical facts. (Due to application of understanding)

Kids tend to not have to solve real complicated problems. They mass games and hence develop their six sense. Adults don't play as much due to possibly dire consequences and thus in order to keep up, they apply logical thinking to cover for practice.

I lack a lot of practice but I use mathematical analysis in order to improve my TvT economic management. I use logical reasoning to construct a new build order for TvZ (Which is in the testing phase atm) and so on.

These aren't facts. Its more to an individual choice and again my reasoning of such a fact.
