I had only gotten through the Terran campaign in broodwar so when I picked up SC2, it was the only race that I already knew the mechanics for. I've thought about switching to zerg, but I've found out that I fit best with the terran mindset - you can't lift up your hatchery or unit-producing buildings
edit: I just placed in ladder about ten games ago, so I only have about 20 points. Gold tho.
Random; I'm still trying them out.
Plat ~200points
I play Terran because Alien is one of my favorite movies and Halo is still one of my favorite games.
Bronze. Too lazy to check my points.
I'm a huge Stargate fan and the Protoss are very similar to the Goa'uld in many ways so I just naturally felt an attraction to the race.
Master, 2.8k +

I was Protoss in BW and in the beta. Zerg was the only race I enjoyed playing macro games with though, and I tend to only work towards macro games when playing, so I picked Zerg.
Ironically, Zerg is the only race I never get macro games with...
1.6k-1.7k Diamond.

chose toss in bw because I thought it was totally OP that the workers could go do other stuff after starting a building.. I was 9

Haha dude i had the same reason except i was 17 :l

I played both T and Z in BW. I didn't like playing as P.
In SC2, I still don't like P.
I am starting to resent TvP and TvZ because of how much I have to rely on harass and all-in pushes to win..... I want to play a macro game.....
But I hate ZvZ because of how fucked up the matchup is thanks to banelings.....
So, I haven't settled on a race yet.....
2k-ish Diamond, with 800-ish pts bonus pool, and facing 25% masters players at the moment, so I'm pretty sure I'll move up soon.....
Played toss for almost 9 years on bw, just carried it over ^^ Wanted to try and learn T but I never really put any effort into it so I just stuck with my Protoss ^^
Because of the Maestro, and then it carried over to SC2.
Why not play them all? Random might take a bit more effort to learn but is much more fun imo.
A Korean guy told me to play Terran for BW... then it just transitioned over in SC2.
Though I prefer random in SC2... more fun! ^_^
Haven't really been playing SC2 seriously yet because I'm still waiting for my desktop to come in the mail. (Laptop can't handle SC2 even on low) So I'm just silver league right now but that's from playing on like 0-5 FPS on a horrible laptop. lolz
On BW: my max was D+ currently just D though this season. *sad face*
Unless you are a high level competitive player I don't see why you would settle on a race. I play mostly T and Z because I have a lot of friends who only play P.
I was Z in BW but I dunno for some reason T just appealed to me more. It just felt T was an easier transition to sc2.
when i started BW, my three friends that played all happened to be each of the 3 races. I picked Protoss, just because i figured that friend could best teach me how to play. I liked terran the best, and still do because of all of the strategies it has, but never was able to break away from protoss for enough time to get better at terran. Same thing happened in SC2. By default, i picked protoss, but tanks are my favorite unit, and so i tried again for Terran, but couldn't bring myself to leave Protoss.
I got SC2 way later than all of my friends. So they had already chosen their races. For teamgames they needed a terran and thus, it was settled.
In BW I was comfortable playing P but somehow I didn't like how the race felt to me in SC2 and I got along with the T mechanics ( by the way I was a total noob in BW and I am still a noob SC2 low plat high gold)
Ive played Terran for 12 years now. And it carried into SC2. But im gonna copy/paste my favorite quotes ever:
Terran is the race of big dicked Vikings who rampage across the galaxies in huge battleships, rip up the ground with artillery spawned from the forges of hell, and send waves of valiant warriors to fight the freaks of science. Much better to die an awesome Terran than to live as a magic wielding fairy or a mindless sac of biological goop. MANIFESTO7

Even the short-sighted and simple Terran players can recognize such a great imbalance. But I have to admit, having the fastest unit in the game on only the 2nd tier of tech with a short build time, that can shoot fragmentation grenades capable of vaporizing all peons, zerglings, zealots, defilers, and high and dark templar in seconds, and can even shoot these grenades backwards without losing acceleration, AND can shit out three mini-nukes that burrow into the ground only to pop out at the perfect time and seek out an enemy unit at an inescapable speed, gives siege tanks and their arclite cannons quite a run for their money.
Ah, how could I forget their cost? Let's make a list of units (excluding peons) that are cheaper than vultures: --Zergling --Marine
That was easy.
Nony's comment is regarding BW, but Manifesto7's comment is everlasting.

Currently I'm a zerg. I like the macro oriented style of play. Carried over from BW. Lately I've been thinking about random, though.
Zerg is freakin sexy, thats why
fell in love the moment i saw zerg in sc2 was a protoss player in bw
I rng'd zerg and i played 700 games as zerg in beta, 2 as protoss and 1 as terran
so zerg.
First time I played BW and picked Zerg because they were bug-like thingies that looked cool.
Never changed since, I've never tried any other race, ever.
Progamer + carried from BW.
I also like to identify with the race that most closely matches the human race. (Imperial Guard, Terran, UEF, GDI, etc.)
Protoss are just obviously the coolest.
I didn't play in BW, but when I came in during the beta I watched a lot of games and I was impressed by the skill of Zerg players, especially at the point where roaches got nerfed and zergs were having a lot of trouble... So, I play zerg. I have played a lot of random team games, and I tried protoss for a bit in 1v1, but the skills don't really carry over and I had a hard time learning it, even though they're supposedly "the easier race". I suppose it is the fact that I'm new to RTS which is keeping me from learning a new race. I do really well with zerg, and for that reason I will stay with the race that I first picked forever, no matter what anyone says about them being harder or whatever. Go zerg! =D EDIT: Ah and I am in diamond, but I had to take a two month break due to school, so I haven't had a chance to push for masters yet.
Kinda unrelated, but I play protoss and last night I dreamed I was playing terran.
I played mostly T in bw but I disgust how the marauder changed how that race. then I chose P because I like the warp-in mechanic alot.
I like tanks, and MANIFESTO7... is correct.
Carried over from BW, but on to that decision:
I played a lot of Starcraft64 back in 2000. Yes, I said Starcraft64; they had a console release where you moved so slow the computer was a huge threat. Anyway, I got to play each race a whole lot (since I would campaign and then the memory would get erased), and I always got stuck in episode 6 (the final zerg campaign, so I played a lot more zerg than other races).
When I finally got a hang of how zerg worked I fell in love with it. So a few years ago when I started playing iccup I played as zerg. I love how uneasy it makes an opponent feel knowing that their army can get overrun, or get attacked in so many placed at once their concentration dies. I never got very good at BW (D+ after a few seasons), but I had a lot of fun.
Enter SC2. Played the terran campaign, then went for multiplayer and started messing with zerg. It still had the elements of making my opponent uncomfortable, but I had a hard time keeping up with the other races all-ining me! I understood the macro mechanic very well from BW, but everything else was lacking. I learned to accept it and play from time to time as grad school allows. I'm sure when it gets to be summer I'll learn new and exciting ways to make my opponent feel uncomfortable again!
I started off in BW playing terran, but my friend was protoss and beat me with every single protoss cheese imaginable, so I figured, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." I always liked terran more, but now I'm protoss I just can't get the feel for terran anymore. I'm horrible at laying mines and managing my tanks. I'm also horrible when playing against terran as protoss.
Psi Storm.
Simple as that.

Stargate is/was amazing. Play Terran because I liked that race best when I started playing multiplayer. And I really enjoy Terran mech play in particular, hellions are just great lol Dropping them in multiple expands at once cooking enemy eco just feels soooo great.

I played a little WC3 before picking up SC2. Night Elf was my race of choice after watching Moon play, that guy inspired me to stick with Night Elf throughout my entire WC3 playing days.
It was only natural that I started playing Terran in SC2, as they were the only available race to play in campaign (until later on, toward the end) as well as their similarities to Night Elf. Ranged units, tech trees, mobility and harassment, etc.
However, I hit a wall at Platinum where I could no longer progress further in the ladder. I switched to Protoss after having dabbled with them in campaign.
I caught on quickly and started using them exclusively. After 4gating my way through custom games to learn the tech tree and timings, I started learning other buidls to work on unit compositions and what not.
After switching to Toss I finally broke through into Diamond. Hopefully I'll get to Masters soon.
