Just wondering what some songs are that you later found out you had the lyrics completely wrong.

I used to think "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John actually said
"Hold me closer young Tony Danza", and I used to think "In the Air Tonight" by Genesis, actually said "Go Long" like a football term, me and my brother used to sing in the car when we were little, "Gooooo loooooonnnngggg"

So TL! CONFESS IT DAMNIT! What are some songs you had the lyrics wrong to?

Karma police For a minute there I lost myself. I though it said Four minutes there I lost myself.

And the part "When you mess with us" Heard "When you mess with love" lol

When the song "I Try" by Macy Gray was on the radio, I was a youngin, and quite into Pokemon. I always thought she sang "I say goodbye and Machoke." It blew my mind years later when I found out she was really singing "I say goodbye and I choke" >_<

We looked at this in an intro psych class. Apparently, people have misinterpreted purple rain where he says, "Scuse me while I kiss the sky" as "kiss this guy". Oh, lol. already mentioned in that link.

I hate when you get really really attached to the lyrics that were wrong and it ends up ruining the song for you. Can't think of an example atm.

It would be very interesting to have a study done on the correlation between the accuracy of lyrics comprehension and how well the song does on charts.

The first thing that came to mind was "Negaigoto hitotsu dake".

Negaigoto hitotsu dake kanaete kureru nara
Kizutsuke atta ai ga hajimaranai you ni...

I think I was wrongly influenced by someone that it meant "if I have only one wish I want love without pain.". But it takes only a rudimentary amount of Japanese to see the wish was to have the love to have never started in the first place.

So growing up I was a huge Pearl jam fan, and the song "Alive" always confused me. There is a line where he says "but I'm glad we talked". Growing up, what I thought he said was "but I played guitar". That line always confused the hell out of me. Listen to it, think played guitar, and you will hear it!
Also, in high school my buddy and I had an argument because of the Tool song "Eulogy". There is a line where Maynard sings "...at everything but his heart". My buddy swore up and down that he did not say heart, but, get this...forehead. "...at everything but his forehead"?!?!?!
WTF?

It took him years, but he finally admitted his error on that one.

"Blinded by the Light" - Bruce Springsteen

Thought for the longest time that the chorus said "revved up like a doucher in the middle of the night". He actually saying duece, like the number 2.

A lot of people are confused by that one. It is even more evident in the Manfred Mann version of the song. He does say revved up like a deuce, but not referring to an old Deuce Coup car. I am always explaining that one to people.

There is actually a term for this, misinterpreting a phrase from pop-culture (like a poem or lyrics to a song) is called mondegreen. Don't ask me how i know that, but it's cool :D

Omg I laughed so hard. I never really payed attention to the words in that song but that bear stuff fits perfectly. :O

Edit: I just checked the actual words and found that's pretty much what she actually says, just with "I" instead of "eyed" and "bear" and "cross" having different meanings. :/

I thought that Macy Gray song was more like, "I keep my cool but I'm feeling [blue]" but I guess it's "I keep my cool but I'm fiending." I know she never actually says blue but it rhymes and made more sense to me, made the song kinda better. Also, I thought she said "My world crumbles when you are not here." But I guess she says "my world crumbles when you are not near" which again sounds a little less good to me. Those are the two main ones.

Definitly New Noise from Refused... never got what the screaming was until i looked it up, which was pretty much about 2 years after regularly screaming along in clubs ... wrong, of course

In that "I'm Blue" song, I always heard it as "I'm blue, if I was green I would die."

so sad to find out the real one.

Also, for the song "Peaches" I was 100% sure it was "Pigeons." As in, "moving to the country, gonna eat me a lot of pigeons."

Sorely disappointed by both.
