I started playing Starcraft 2 without having played Starcraft. I started playing this September just after I got it for my birthday, so around the 12th.

I've always been interested in Starcraft, but never really knew how to get into it. I had an ex who loved it and played, and showed me how to cheese people with zerg, and we watched a few streams, but that was about it.
So this Summer at the local Anime Convention, I watched the SC2 tournament and decided I was going to buy it on my birthday. (I had bought it after it came out, but my friend decided he wanted it. I gave up and just gave it to him. =_=)

My boyfriend(then was just a friend) helped pay for it, and also taught me the basics and how to play. Since then we've been playing lots together, and he says i've improved a lot.

I'm only about bronze 1v1, though. (I haven't finished the placement matches. I get nervous to play 1v1. Haha.)

My question is, is it worth it to go back to BW? Like, buying it, and playing that?
Or should I just continue on playing SC2 and just keep watching replays, playing league, and trying to get better.
Would there be a point to doing it? I've been told that BW is only full of people who are really good now, so going into the game would be much more difficult.

Opinions? Advice? Thanks.

Well, you don't have to buy BW, you can just download it over at iccup.com, so why not give it a try and see if you enjoy it

I think you should play at least the BroodWar campaign and maybe a few games against a computer. Then you can start to appreciate how good current BW pros really are. And then you can watch lots of great ProLeague games, yay!
Dear BW Gods, it IS now autumn, so...

Considering BW is pretty much free, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. You can forget about being competitive with it however, as you mentioned, BW is filled with skilled players nowadays.

Play BW for the story. It's much less painful to improve at SC2 than it is to improve at BW.

You don't really need to buy it if you play on ICCUP. But if 1v1s make you nervous, playing against the established BW players is probably not the most ideal situation. I suggest finding some practice partners, people who will play with you and genuinely want to learn and get better. Eventually you'll feel more confident in your play and laddering won't be a problem anymore!

Their right sadly, Getting into BW now would be so hard. The average rank on iccup went down for everyone so their all about 500pts less then before give'r'take.
I play now and then for nopstalgias sake and get roflstomped. its quite disheartening.

Its incredibly difficult to get good at broodwar nowadays.

The mechanical skill required to play is much higher, that coupled with the fact that the only people who are still playing broodwar are people who have been playing it for 10+ years, makes it a very difficult game to play these days. Even the bad people are actually pretty good.

You do things because they're entertaining or they help you survive life.

If playing BW is not entertaining then don't play it... that's really all that can be said.

I played a handful of BW games before deciding that I didn't want to play it anymore, but I sure do love watching it.

Yeah! I wanted to watch BW games but I'm like ?_?
It looks much different than SC2, so I get confused, haha.

Yeah, I get nervous just playing league 1v1 on SC2!
I make really silly mistakes, makes me go >: [ at myself, haha. So I avoid the situation and play 2v2. XD
But it's a good idea to get out there and just do it, right? >: ]

Roflstomped. XD Maybe losing will be good for me. Then I'll just learn to take it and go with it.

I meant more like, would it help at all or would I just be playing because I haven't and probably should?

Worth it for what? What's your end goal?
To get better at BW? Then obviously yeah, it's worth it to play BW.
To get better at SC2? No, they are different games, it would be pointless.
To have fun playing whatever game you are playing? Yeah, you can have a ton of fun playing BW still, but as a noob, you are probably better off with the more streamlined and feature-friendly SC2.

Okay, thanks!
Because I have friends who played BW before SC2, and they said playing that before definitely helped them get to where they are now.
My friend is in Diamond and he said he wouldn't be there now if he hadn't played BW.

I was like ?_? Should I go back and try it?

Go for it I guess, if you don't like it you can always go back to SC2.

I will reiterate what other people have said, in that you are going to lose for a long long time. Like I'm no good at BW (was like ~2000) and I would absolutely stomp people who have been playing semi-seriously for a couple months, like it isn't even close. Getting decent though is lots of fun! You can constantly see improvement match after match, and it's fun to play if you keep up with it.

If you ever want some games just pm me, GL :D

So... you wanna play BW in hopes that it'll make you better at SC2?

There are fundamentals that are transferable in every competitive genre, but if your ultimate goal is to get better in SC2 then you should just play SC2.

Honestly, I think you should just keep playing SC2 and force yourself to queue for 1v1. BW is a different game. Even though many of its skill sets carry over into SC2, it isn't worth trying to learn BW to indirectly become better at SC2 when you could just play SC2 instead. Your record doesn't matter as much as getting better.

If you want to become better at SC2, play SC2. Brood War is a far different game in terms of mechanics, and is much more difficult as you lose HUGE aspects which make SC2 easier in comparison such as auto-mining workers, selecting more then 12 units at once, and the ability to select multiple buildings.

That on top of the fact that the BW community atm, especially on ICCUP atm, is a VERY COMPETITIVE group of individuals (which has never been "stronger") compared to the SC2 community.

If you want to just experience the game without trying to use it to learn to play SC2 more efficiently, then, go ahead!

Okay, thank you very much. ^^ I didn't know how much more competitive BW was to SC2, to be honest.

Brood war is one of the most hardest rts games to get competitively good at, so this is why so many people who are former brood war players have excellent rts playing skills which transferred to sc2.

it's gonna take a shitload of time for you to learn and develop those skills while attempting to transfer those skills from bw, so might as well learn those skills from sc2.

Okay o:

Thanks guys :>
