So, after attending IEM NYC and then MLG DC over the past few weeks, I've noticed that many many north american/euro players get really sweaty at lans T_T.

I mean, this really isn't a problem when it comes to their performance, but getting someone that hasn't been interested in e-sports in the past, like my girlfriend, is especially hard when they show the players on camera and they look like sweaty pimply nerds O.o

Ex. we didn't make it for Whitera's rounds vs kiwikaki so me and my girlfriend were watching the stream, and she couldnt help but keep commentating on how Whitera looked like he had just been doused in water.

I know pro-gamer appearance is something that is still not something most gamers are concerned about in NA, but i think one of the biggest reasons gaming continues to be popular in Korea is because the progamers there (for the most part) don't look like the arch-typical sweaty, pimply nerd.

Anyways, Im not sure if MLG should look in to investing in better air-conditioning for the events or something, but i think the appearance of many progamers in NA/EU right now are quite literally hindering the penetration of Esports in the west. What do you guys think?

the only reason you don't see korean players as "pimply nerds" is because of the amount of makeup they cake on them before they go on air. and even then, half of them seem like their team could really use a proactiv sponsorship. and honestly they're pretty sweaty too, one of them (jaehoon) even has the nickname "sweattoss" because of how much he perspires.
so in summary i'm not really sure that you have a valid point

Sc2 isn't as bad as athletics but it can make you sweat. Not really much anyone can do about that...

What do you propose is done about the way some players seem like 'sweaty pimply nerds'?

Is this a serious response? I think most players, even those who the op are referring to, bathe and whatnot... that doesn't solve the core issue.

Atleast they look like they're putting some effort in to it. When QXC comes out on stage it doesn't even look like he's bothered shaving before he's set to appear in front of thousands of people.

Sweaty pimply nerds? Honestly I didn't see too many in the SC2 section.

The EG guys for example looked really sharp. Well groomed, well dressed, in great shape, etc. Not at all what you'd imagine your "typical nerd" to look like.

SC2 does not have this problem. I've been to warhammer tourneys, and simply been in the same room as a MTG tourney. You haven't experienced nerd stank-ass kill-yourself stench until you've been to a MTG tourney.
I admire your commitment to being *very* oily

Hm I guess you raise the issue:

At what point to these events need to start requiring players to do things like be cleanshaven/clean/etc? At what point to they actually start applying makeup.

I think the answer is when they become big enough. Most of these events just aren't big enough yet (which ironically you claim prevents growth) to justify the time/effort/money to make this happen. Also, the professional community is too split between different events/sponsors/regions for there to be enough room for uniformity about stuff like this.

I dunno. With basic hygiene and a decently healthy diet, most people will be fine. Otherwise it's a genetic problem or the rooms are just fucking hot. Nothing you can do about that.

What do you mean by 'fine'?

Playing games at a high level under high intensity will make many people sweat even if the room is cool enough. The room can't be cold or else hands won't be as nimble. And I agree we can't do anything about genetic problems.

edit: Huk's hoodie while he plays may not help though LOL

Then again, think a lot of people on 'big' name teams like EG, Fnatic, Complexity, the G7 type teams, have obligations to their sponsors to promote their products in a positive manner. Teams like these have multi-million dollar companies sponsoring them.

Whereas on the other hand, many players who are playing independently or are on less recognized teams are probably not obligated to present themselves in a professional manner.

The contracts players sign are pretty much confidential in all cases, but i wouldnt be surprised if teams like EG and Fnatic outlined standards of professionalism before they sign players.

I do completely agree that starcraft has a better player body than many other games though. But starcraft is one of the flagship esports titles atm, and if players want it to expand they need to be willing to work on their image just a little.

White-ra looked like that the moment I saw him, before the tournament even started or before we even entered the convention center. A large group of teamliquid/pro-team people were at lunch and white-ra came in looking like he came out of a pool. It might be styled that way, I don't know.

Thats pretty strange. I know he looks quite handsome when he doesn't look like he's just taken a dive.

i, on some level, agree with op. Really not letting any non gamer give esports a chance. But what to do, what to do.
Hi can i get one McGracken please?

This was mentioned on SotG about professionalism and what not. I think if you are a player who is a favorite, or will most likely make it to the finals or a big name at least you should groom yourself, at least do it for your fans. People in this day and age like seeing human beings that are pleasant to the eye, so I'd imagine a lot of people would be turned off by this thus like has been stated before me will hinder the progression of E-Sports a little maybe even a lot but either way it doesn't help.

i don't wanna sound racist or anything.. but some people are more genetically predisposed to sweat more, just as some people have ridiculous amounts of hair (i'm looking at you, indian people).
