Hello friends, what follows is a story about me being stupid. There is a high risk of face palming.

Chapter 1:

As some of you may be acutely aware, I am a musician. I actually spend a lot of time writing weird songs. I think they're pretty good, but that is only tertiary to the bittersweet tale I am about to relate.

At the beginning of this past weekend, I realized that I had finally accrued enough money to create a (humble) home recording studio.

Through various channels, I had collected a Shure SM57, a solid firewire interface, Amplitube, Tracktion, and a pair of studio headphones.

So I got home, set every thing up.

I tested my mic, and it was working, then I tested my guitar input and it was also working.

Now the real test; I needed to see if I could play both simultaneously, and so I did. It worked! Great, time to rec----WOAH SHIT!

That's when I spilled a glass of water. Now, maybe some of you have spilled water before, and generally... it is not such a big deal. Unfortunately when I spillled this glass of water, it was not on to a table or a chair. It was not outside on the grass, or even on the carpet; destined to invite mildew and disease in to my lungs.

No, this water had more nefarious plans and proceeded to pour directly on to my computer. And not just on to my computer... but straight in to power supply fan/vent which was, until then, innocently minding its own business atop my fine electric friend.

The computer sputtered and powered down.

Then, almost immediately it powered up again.

My first thought is "no you don't", because I am smart enough to realize that having my computer 'on' and 'full of water' at the same time is probably unwise.

And I proceed to disconnect my computer from the wall and spin it upside down.

As I do so, I hear the faint tinkling of a computer screw. Wonderful; so for a brief moment, my computer was

1) full of water

2) Powered on

3) Had a loose screw meandering about its electrified organs.

I then removed the power supply because I knew for sure it was dead. No electronic device could survive such a devastating attack.

I had no hair dryer, so I put it (open) next to my screen door to try to get some air circulating through it. This had almost no effect. The internal components remained mildly damp over night.

In the morning, I placed my computer in the sun for about thirty minutes, fully aware that the damage was almost certainly done and it would likely never power up again.

I brought it in, perfectly dry, installed a new power supply...

and booted it up.

It worked.

The computer booted straight to my windows login screen with almost no hiccups...

I said out loud, in my room, alone... "No fucking way!"

Well, as it stands, there really as no fucking way, because no sooner had I uttered this fateful ejaculation than the video signal dropped; though the computer itself seemed fine.

Alright, "so maybe it's just the video card." I drove about 40 miles to my brothers home and grabbed his old 3D card, drove back, put it in to my computer.

Nope, didn't work.

Then I put it in to my alternate PCI-E slot, because I figured the problem might be that the slot had shorted.

No dice, that slot is for crossfire only, so even if my hunch was correct that was not going to be the solution.

Alright, so I'm fucked, I know that now I will have to buy at least a new motherboard.

Then I remember, due to some earlier technical difficulties (in installing the game Armored Princess) I had removed a 2 gig stick of ram from my computer; the games installer seemed to be confused by additional ram past that point (really, it's actually a well documented issue.)

I never bothered to put it back in, and I figured that before I go buy a whole new motherboard I should at least try it.

So I did.

And...

It booted up. It actually booted up. Unfortunately I had to skimp on the power supply, but I should have enough funds to adequately replace it as early as tomorrow.

What does that mean..?

I poured a fucking entire glass of water directly in to my computer and all I lost was a stick of RAM and a power supply.

Holy shit I am lucky.

Chapter 2:

On the advice of a geek at least two levels higher than I am, I completely dismantled the computer and went over all the components with rubbing alcohol.

I air dried it, and then tried to turn it on. No video signal.

I left it unplugged for about three hours, and then tried again. It booted up perfectly and seems to be working fine.

Every time I start it up it asks me to do a windows startup repair, if I click "okay" it just flashes the screen and asks me again. Then I can "start windows normally"

and that seems to work fine.

Today, when I tried to boot up Sc2 to test it, it said 'your starcraft 2 installation is corrupted, please repair. The repair failed, so I am going to try re-installing.

I guess at thispoint it is either just going to get better or progressively worse (most likely the latter.) I think that if I swap out the motherboard it will solve most of these issues, however. Maybe a new stick of ram too since the stick I put back in was always a bit dodgy.]

Chapter 3:

I put in new RAM. The computer seems to be running perfectly, maybe even better than before.

...

I can play Starcraft again.

So the real lesson here is that pouring water in to your computer is really not that big a deal at all, and may actually be advisable. Still, I keep my water in a sippy cup now.

EDIT:

Wait a second. King's Bounty? Does it have anything to do with Heroes of Might and Magic?

No, I was kidding the the moral there. It was obviously really, really stupid.

Illu: Heroes of Might and Magic was a spin off of Kings Bounty 1; the new Kings Bounty is a sequel to the old one.

It plays like a cross between HoMM and FF7. It's really good.

I went to their websites and noticed the hexagon grids. As an avid HoMM fan I think I absolutely need to play this.

I'm quite sure that pure water doesn't conduct electricity, as long as your skin with its salts didn't contaminate it.

That being said, I suggest trying to refrain from bringing spillable stuff next to your computer. It saves time and money.

Misillusion;

I believe you are 100% correct on both counts. Now that I look, it was indeed from a bottle of purified water.

Edit: Actually, distilled water does conduct electricity:

Distilled water is water that was boiled to steam and recondensed to water. Virtually all the salt that was originally in it is left behind as the pure water boils away. So distilled water is relatively pure H2O (HOH). Water can ionize to H+ and OH- like salt does, but it ionizes to a far, far, far, lesser degree and is therefore very resistant to conducting electricity.

Well, I think it's kind of the way it is with the computers now-a-days, which are powerful but also run really hot - so the case has to be more open - thus also more open to.... undesirable liquid substances, as well.

I am not sure if I should be glad about this, but my case is Antec and the PSU is on the bottom. If I spill anything through the top fan window, then for better or worse it has to be through my heatsink, mobo, and graphic card first.

That's alright.

One time I got up in the middle of the night, and knocked a glass of fanta on my $160 keyboard (its a mechanical keyboard). I shake all the fanta out of it and stick in a hairdryer, all the keys worked (some were squishy though) so I considered myself lucky.

Then 2 days later I did the exact same thing again!

I ended up desoldering/resoldering all the dodgy switches with the ones from my numpad and other keys I didn't use.

I spilled a cup of ice tea on top of my computer, like half of it went right in the top vent and onto the grahics card. The picture instantly turned to some black and white squares and I unplugged that shit as fast as I could, now, I thought I was fucked and I had no clue about computers at that point, as it was a while ago. So I went to bed.. In the morning, the ice tea had dried, and the video card was visibly coated in a sticky brown liquid.. everything worked fine though and I never cleaned it up, sold the computer along with that sticky layer of ice tea on my video card years after. Pretty weird.

I have dumped multiple full cups of water on top of my laptop and it never had a problem. Then again I had a IBM think pad and the keyboard tray has holes in it so that the water goes on the keyboard, then right though holes in the bottom of the computer so none of the internals actually get wet.

I also spilled some water on my keyboard(desktop) a month or so ago. I unplugged it and tried to get the water out and plugged it in an hour or two later and it worked. The next morning it did not. I spent several hours taking taht thing apart, then I took a circuit pen and redrew the content lines that shorted out. and put it back together, still works fine

Lesson learned: laptops are better at getting wet then desktop keyboards
