New interesting project. Any good coders in TL?

Yesterday, I went to a google tech talk and they demoed html 5 for us. I did not realize how uber cool html 5 was until the guy started playing a quake 2 on his web browser which he ported by pure html 5 components. No Java/flash/other language bullshit. According to him even multiplayer works well with this ported game. I figured if a 3d game can work well with html 5, why the hell can't starcraft 1? I thought it would be very cool if people can play starcraft 1 on their web browsers. As a web developer I think this would be a really awesome project to take up but I need a team of very talented coders (especially ones with experience in porting games) for this. Anyone interested?

EDIT: Due to SC not being open sourced and legal reasons, I propose creating a new game like starcraft that can be played in the browser. That means I also need a good graphics person on the team.

Actually I hadn't thought about that. If we open source it and not make profit off it, I don't think it would cause too much problems would it?

Quake 2 is open source, so you "just" need to convert c to javascript, SC is closed source, so you need to convert from x86 asm.
It's also not legal without permission from blizzard.

Oh didn't realize Quake 2 was open sourced. I thought that guy did some uber hack magic or something.

it might be easier just to create our own version of starcraft. lol. This idea sounds too cool in my head for me to give up on it!

I'm definitely interested in doing some kind of game project using HTML5; it doesn't necessarily have to be SC for me though.

There are a lot of other cool demos on the web.

Love the fact you can do so much stuff with just <canvas> and JS.

Never used WebGL before though, I really should play with it sometime

Wouldn't Javascript BW be very slow and sluggish?

you need good coders to make a game like SC, from scratch, to play in your browser, because it would be cool

good luck sir

The quake 2 game that the guy ported ran at 30 frames per second. He said if he actually tried to could double that frame rate which is enough for even sc2 to run on. Javascript computation power is supposedly ALOT better than it was previously so if it can run Quake 2 without too much lag, it should run SC BW just fine. As for networking issues, I feel like if we kept the network design as simple as possible, latency wouldn't be as much of a problem as it was in SC BW. These are just my thoughts though, let me know if u guys think otherwise

Uh, essentially, that means you'd need to reprogram the entirety of SC:BW, which was done with an entirely professional (and excellent) video game company, AKA Blizzard.

I mean, it's doable, and good luck, it just seems a little bit more difficult than what you had in mind.

I don't plan on creating the whole thing. I've built games before so I know what kind of insane work was put into SC BW. I am sure that if a small team was able to achieve the real basics of the game play (even just creating buildings and units) it would attract a lot of people into this project. You never know what will come out of the other end when u open source things.

could you make it graphical? And run in full screen? With the ability to scroll in any direction? And have like an online chat system/meeting place, like a battle zone, or fight net, or something, so we could chat and then initiate games against each other? Even save in-game videos of our battles to show other people?

I'd play that.

There was a free/open source version of Warcraft 2 and Starcraft that could even load the graphical assets from the original CDs. Was called Freecraft back then, now it's called Stratagus or Wargus and Stargus for the respective games.
It's pretty raw though and plays quite differently. Makes you appreciate how amazing the original games really are.
You can reach the rainbow. I'll be there to help.
