I've found this on a forum I visit every week and I thought it would interest some people on TL.net.

Andrew Price, from blenderguru.com is a guy who makes one new video tutorial every week about how to use Blender 3d. A free 3d modeling program. This month's theme was typography and the most requested tutorial was how to make the SC2 logo. So he made a 48 min video tutorial teaching you how to make the SC2 logo using Blender.

i use maya
i could never get used to blender.. seems so bare bones.
but i hear its very good for open source

I'm sorry, there's some confusion here. Either you didn't understand the scope of this tutorial or you don't understand Maya.

This tutorial focuses not only on modeling, but also on 2d editing and video compositing. And Maya, while a powerful 3d modeling and animation tool, is not meant for 2d work. Blender, on the other hand, is not only a 3d application, but also has compositing tools.

You cannot do what Blender can do in this tutorial using only Maya. If you cannot learn Blender, like you said. You would need more tools other than only Maya for compositing. Such as Adobe After Effects or even PhotoShop, depending on what you're doing. You'd render the 3d models in Maya on separate 2d layers, and later use those layers in After Effects to add the 2d effects to the scene.

On the tutorial he shows how to do all that using only Blender.
