Since (once again), the previous lesson was still over several people's heads, I'm going to try to reach a little bit lower and hope that those of you guys who want to learn Korean can jump up and grab hold:

(You like how I did that? I'm on fire today)

This time I'm going to be talking about the word "and".

In the last lesson I talked about the word 그리고, which is the word you use when you want to start a sentence with the word "and" (which is completely acceptable in Korean but not at all in English — go to my previous blog entry to read more about that if you want).

The other words that you use for "and" in Korean to link together two different sentences are -와/과 and -(하)고.

This is all extremely simple and intuitive, so faut pas t'en faire.

Talking about 와/과:

You use 와 or 과 when you are providing a list of things.

Example:

The following groups of sentences are equivalent in meaning:

A는 날 선물 주었어.
B는 날 선물 주었어.
C는 날 선물 주었어.
D는 날 선물 주었어.

A는 날 선물 주었어.
그리고 B는 날 선물 주었어.
그리고 C는 날 선물 주었어.
그리고 D는 날 선물 주었어.

A와 B와 C와 D는 선물을 나헌테 주었어.

+ Show Spoiler +
A and B and C and D gave me a gift.

btw:

Notice how when you list them all together at once using 와/과 you don't do that thing in English where we add commas. That's why I didn't write the phrase "A, B, C, and D gave me a gift". Korean don't do it like that -- they just use the 와/과 as the commas... essentially.

PS to Koreans: How would I say "A and B and C and D gave a gift to me?"

EDIT:
[18:19] Blake: I have one more question! haha
[18:19] Sυε: let me know
[18:19] Blake: 친구와 동생이 있어요.
친구과 동생이 있어요.
Which is correct?
[18:19] Blake: I think the first one.
[18:20] Sυε: 와
[18:20] Sυε: ok
... And that's all there is to talk about with that (see what I did there? lol)

-(하)고 is a suffix that you add to the end of a verb (as opposed to 와 and 과, which you add to the end of whatever else you feel like - just not verbs) to symbolize "and".

Example:

The following are equivalent in meaning:

난 X 이야. 그분은 Y 이야.
난 X 이고 그분은 Y 이야.
+ Show Spoiler +
I am X and he is Y

And lastly, as a piece of extra information...

You can also use (하)고 to talk about "this then that".

FYI the word that you use to start a sentence with "then" is 그렇다면, which literally means "if [it is] correct" or "if [it is] true. And when you think about it, that's pretty cool because you normally don't think about it like that.
(Maybe that's one of the reasons why Koreans can catch on to programming and shit easier: its just apart of their language)

Example:

The following sentences are equivalent in meaning.

제가 이걸 할 거야. 그렇다면 그걸 할 거야.

제가 이걸 할 거하고 그걸 할 거야.

+ Show Spoiler +
I will do this then [I] will do that.

You're welcome.

주었어 is actually spelled 줬어. Typing them both into google translate says they're both right, so maybe it's just a modern conversion or something to put them together.

The only other thing I didn't see explained was you use 와 if the word doesn't have a final consonant (ends in a vowel) and 과 if it does.

줬어 is not the correct spelling. its the right pronunciation (obviously), though.

i originally wrote 줬어 as well because i was thinking of 보다 but it didn't sound right to me and so when i looked it up...

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/주다

... you get the idea.

i also didnt explain when to use each kind of the ㄴ(는/은)데요 things either. i also didn't explain when to use 는/은.

nor did i explain when to use 하고 instead of just 고.

this is not a remedial class. if you can tell when to use 는/은 or 를/을 then you don't need to have those things explained again.

This case is reversed though. You typically match consonants with vowels but 와/과 are different.
뭐뭐 (는) and (를) and (가) but (와)
뭣뭣 (은) and (을) and (이) but (과)

I'm fairly certain 줘요 is the correct spelling. Just as any 우다 -> 워 conjugation.

both are fine, but 주었어 will be better in written form..

anyway, why is it 날? why the use of object particle on 나? in this case, the object shud be the present

in this case, use 한테/에게 will be better.. or you could just not mention the 나 at all, it's quite presumable..

edit:

quoting your "I am X and he is Y",

it should be 난 X이고 그분은 Y이에요.

it should be the use of 이다 and not 있다.

he told you how it was for the present tense

i agree with the present tense thing he gave

wikitionary says its not how you do it for the past tense.

but i'm convinced about the 와/과 thing. that shit is counterintuitive and should be explained because of that.

and btw i'll fix those things mister singapore

the reason i said 날 was the object is because in the English translation I gave, it was the object of the sentence there! that's why i asked the korean question immediately afterward: what if its not the object but the I.O?

As I said, they're both acceptable but 줬어 is "more right".
[18:28] Blake: so should it be 주었어 or 줬어?
[18:29] Sυε: 줬어? is more exact. but 주었어? is not wrong. but usually we use 줬어?

yeah, chill

well fine then its a stalemate. we're both right. then it doesn't matter if i keep what i have.

but for the record, i was originally going to say 줬어 as well - i just changed it because it sounded weird and wikitionary disagreed.

now if you will allow me, i'd like to get back to teaching korean and not being nitpicked to death.

Once again,

We are always learning. We make all sorts of spelling or grammatical errors every day. Does that mean that we don't speak the language or are not able to even teach what we know? Of course not.

before rekrul bans me for speaking out against him i'm going to explain how that post was actually pretty witty because i'm sure that it went flying over his midget head. also because he's an unstable, belligerent asshole who does nothing but troll and call people retarded. and yet he's supposed to be the guy who makes decisions on bans and shit. how ridiculous!

replace 줬어 with you're and 주었어 with you are. then he is saying that i am retarded for saying you are instead of you're. The more articulate version is retarded? absurdity.

Actually I'm starting to think that native Koreans have no idea how to speak their own language, because they're constantly giving me contradictory answers.

Or else they just have no clue how to explain it to a foreigner (which is fair enough, it's hard to explain this stuff if you've never had to think about it before).

LOL, if i do nothing but troll and call people retarded doesn't that make me stable?

and no, it's differen't than you're and you are

줬어 is simply what koreans use, just because 주었어 is technically correct doesn't change the fact that it's an obsolete part of the korean language, and thus should be ignored/disregarded ESPECIALLY when it comes to teaching simple things to beginners

ok lets learn

라

the verb 줘 (give) is generally just said as 줘 or 줘요 in proper form

but if you attach 라 it becomes a bad manner command 줘라 (fking give it)

so if u get a girls number in the club then a waiter drags her out and shes gone missing u COULD text 빨리(fast) 와(come) and the girl will think ur some fag and ignore

or u could call her and say with a deep dark voice 빨리 와라 (get the fuck over here). then she will know you're not fucking around and ditch whoever loser she is with and will b pounding poktanju's with you in no time.

Tips from the Pros Ladies N Gents.

well yeah jack, if you screw it up they still might find it cute because they love it even when you TRY to speak korean

but the power of actually saying something witty/funny in korean with the exact timing and sense of a korean actually has the same power on a girl condensed into 1 moment = to doing all this in america: taking a girl around in your lamborghini to a super expensive restaurant then a VIP table club and her getting drunk.

i have over 200 korean teachers who can attest to this

"magnetism" is used to describe how materials respond on the microscopic level to an applied magnetic field; to categorize the magnetic phase of a material. for example, the most well known form of magnetism is ferromagnetism such that some ferromagnetic materials produce their own persistent magnetic field. however, all materials are influenced to greater or lesser degree by the presence of a magnetic field. some are attracted to a magnetic field (paramagnetism); others are repulsed by a magnetic field (diamagnetism); others have a much more complex relationship with an applied magnetic field.

and im not a scientists so its cool. get back on topic plz and let rek tell some cool korean language stories

so like 2 weeks ago when i got back to korea me and one of my good 형's (hyung-big brother) go to this room salon and we are sitting in the room with 2 super hot girls and the madam

we've only been in there for like 5 minutes and had just started drinking nothing crazy just some simple smalltalk, but so far i only said 안녕하세요 (hello) in korean and and only spoke english the rest of the time to my girl (she could speak a lil)

my girl is being kind of a prude though from the get go, not being entertaining and thinking shes the absolute hottest stuff in the world (probably cuz she's tilted that she's next to a white guy whos wearing a nike hoodie and sweatpants and thinks im a broke english teacher who don't speak korean)

so i get a call from another friend who is coming cuz he's lost and i'm giving him directions, but my korean is so good that i can be talking on the phone in english and listen to koreans around me talking and still completely understand them.

so my hyung is talking to his girl and my girl about Macau and gambling and how he's going there in a few weeks. the girls are responding very happily cause those girls all love to gamble. then my hyung is talking about how them 2 girls should come with him and me to macau as a double-date trip. it's kind of a fishy conversation though, because the girls are just saying 'sure lets go!' because it's their job to make us happy and not piss us off so it's kinda fake.

so i wrap up my call and as soon as i hang up my hyung is like 댄 지은 너랑..... 마카우....가고싶은데?.. (dan..... it seems.... jieun wants to go to macau with you?)

i snap reply with the exact same pauses in speech as he used in perfect korean

지은이랑... 마카우 가고싶지..안은데? (can't translate exactly with the pauses but it's like "uhhh...i have no desire to go to macau with jieun?")

my hyung, his girl, and the madam burst out in laughter while jieun turns and looks at me with a look of combined terror and awe with her mouth hanging open then punches me on the arm and screams 야!!! (HEY!!!)

i then look at her like shes a retard, roll my sleeve up and conveniently check the time on my flashy watch, and ball the night away

why so 진지해?

Ouch, I suppose that's the end of his Korean lessons :[

Speaking of which, Rekrul, you should do a blog where you teach us to speak suave and sexy Korean! :D

Edit: ...or not .___. Thanks for the story though!

ROFL your Korean is so bad. I don't even care if you're banned, that sentence is just so unforgivably bad. You can't start off formal and then suddenly go informal halfway through the sentence.

Holy fuck.
