I was in a similar situation and it was fun and easy. I started by showing her the basic units and rules, then we played a few 2v2s where I just kept us alive but didn't really attack. That got her used to making an army and getting her economy going. Then I helped coach her in 1v1 for a few games, which taught her very basic defense and timings. Then she was good to go. She could beat 2 comps when we broke up :D
Somehow I imagine the process leading up to that is the reason why you guys broke up.

wait what? when was this? My ex could get D+ on iccup =[

play macro micro with her and let her micro. Thats a good start
nononononon you'll just ragequit when you lose. I've had some pretty stupid allies. One game I lost like 3 nexus to a group of vultures...along with a 160 supply army of goon/zeal/arb/obs, and he was my friend irl.

well, that's how i learned how to play at first. that's why i did it. and she's completely new to rts games.

Just try and encourage her to enjoy the game...do so by playing easy stuff like 3v3 bgh with a stacked team (give her a basic build beforehand and tell her to play protoss) so you can own and she wont be instantly discouraged by doing something like 1v1ing on iccup

I would just set her up with toss and put her right on ICCUP ladder...
It is toss after all

I renamed your thread to be more in line with TL girlfriend blog standards.
Also I don't know why people think teaching your girlfriend Starcraft should be anywhere different than teaching anyone Starcraft. Do what Chill did. Minus the breaking up part.

Play 2v2s like Chill said. Nothing makes a noob happier, then pretending their skilled while you do all the actual work. :D
|
Yea 2v2 is a good idea. Of course you have to tell her all the basics first (building, units, what to produce and so on).
What i did back then was after the game, I showed her BWchart and told her what APM was. Then after couple of games her APM started to rise from 45 to like 70. She looked so happy as if her math paper score went up from 45 to 70 XD

Hmm... show her a pro match. Then let her play a 1v1 against a computer all on her own. After that you can try to instruct her with very basic game knowledge... expanding lets you get more resources quickly, more unit production buildings lets you build your army faster. Really simple things like that are surprisingly difficult for people new to RTS to grasp. Why I recommend letting her watch a pro game, then doing her own thing is because she has to understand both what works and how difficult it is to pull off.
Someone new to Starcraft can't be told strategies. You can't sit behind her telling her what to do, because then she's not really playing. If you try what I suggest, you're going to have the urge to help her right away. Don't. It'll be difficult for her indeed, but learning Starcraft with no RTS background (I realize she may have RTS history, but you didn't mention it so I assume not) is a very fragile task.

I'd start off with a very intense VOD where everybody's screaming all the time, like Bisu vs Yellow for example. She'll see the stage, the fans with their posters, the commentators, the screaming and how excited everybody is. Explain to her how popular Starcraft is in her mother country even after 12 years, with two TV channels dedicated to it and even the Air Force employing a team of professional gamers. Then hopefully she'll say to herself, "if all those people are so hyped, then perhaps there's something to this game after all". I'd then try some team melee or 2v2 to get her started so she isn't on her own from the beginning.

This advice seems similar to what Chill was talking about earlier.
Showing her a pro match is something I wouldn't start with but at least it could have some value. But, having her do a 1v1 against a computer isn't a good starting step... it takes a while to get the basic comfort with the interface before you stand a chance. Instructing her on basic game knowledge is good, but not things like "expanding lets you get more resources quickly." She needs to be able to control one base first! More unit buildings let you build faster? Well yeah she will need to know that but not before she's used to the general sequence of making buildings and units.
Hell yeah this is surprisingly difficult for her to grasp... you've basically set her up for failure with that sequence.

lol my gf went on youtube (by herself, i did no tell her to do this) and watched 5 games from the last OSL. very proud of her. she knows a few of the progamers now haha

Try playing through the campaign in single player.
It gives you a basic knowledge of what the units are and do. The levels may not be overly complicated and you can start/stop pretty much whenever you want. I mean, the first Terran bootcamp thing is like build 2 supply depots and train 5 marines.
It's hard to appreciate watching a pro level TvZ game for example if you don't really know what a science vessel does. That should come later.

weird.. i couldve sworn this thread didnt ask for help on teaching his gf how to play but rather showing her what starcraft is about? hence why i suggested vods >< but since the title has been renamed, yea i guess just do what chill said.
