My girlfriend told me yesterday that she wants to try to understand what all the hype about StarCraft is. She's Korean (I know... how doesn't she already know right?!? ) Anyways, anyone got suggestions how I should go about teaching/showing her what the thousand and thousands of us are talking about?

Maybe show her a few progames and get her to learn to play. That should be enough if she's interested.

She also wouldn't be his girlfriend anymore imo.
Just kidding, dude. Show her a few exciting, intense progames.

Let her tune into Day9's casts!
The most easy way I can think of is to try to explain the bigger picture instead of going into detail. Try to relate to any other game she might have played, or any "real-life" thing she can relate to.

im pretty sure it's easier to get people into SC if you start them off on team games. hell even give team melee a shot

Think big picture.
Explain the objectives of the game, the concept of economy, and how to use hotkeys.
Tell her to build lots of workers.
Set her loose.

I attempted to teach my ex how to play and she was so god awful it was painful to watch. If shes not a gamer at all you are going to have to be very very patient.

WAY too much information..

like, break it WAAAAY DOWNNN.

Remember, she doesn't even know marines exist. She doesnt know what vulture is or what it does.
Just have her play the game first , just sandbox it with her. Let her see how the units work, what can shoot air, stuff like that. Let her see through her own trails that its better to have more than one production building rather than queuing up 5 in 1 rax.

Before any strategy can be discussed, she has to know what pieces are on the game board.
Each day gets better : )

Telling/teaching her to go play, à mon avis, probably isn't the best approach.

I got into Starcraft from watching the Korean progaming scene, and I imagine it'll be more fun for the un-RTS-initiated to watch before blindly trying to play. Most of the time, they'll suck miserably and be turned off immediately (generalizing), so I think it's more fun to watch, at least for now. Show her some of the threads that sort of explain Starcraft first!

After TL had the competition "post a video of your gf beating a computer" I realized 90% of you are inept teachers. Seriously. Telling your gf to "micro her zealots" is stupid.

I was in a similar situation and it was fun and easy. I started by showing her the basic units and rules, then we played a few 2v2s where I just kept us alive but didn't really attack. That got her used to making an army and getting her economy going. Then I helped coach her in 1v1 for a few games, which taught her very basic defense and timings. Then she was good to go. She could beat 2 comps when we broke up :D

bad idea. honestly the SC/BW campaign sucks by today's standards. skirmishs/team games are the way to go IMO

Play some team games in a friendly environment. If you can, play a 2vs2 with her against some of your mutual friends. In between games, try to devise some strategies together (nothing too elaborate or demanding of course). The social aspect of games really appeals to most girls, so use that to get her into Starcraft. Making her play solo against the computer or random opponents on Bnet/ICCup is a really bad idea. Also, until she has a good understanding of the game, she's not really going to get any enjoyment from watching professional games.

I think it's important to know that it'll be quite a long process and you can't rush into too many things at once. Think back when you first learned the game. For some it took a few years, a few in about a year, and almost never in an instant.

It's important to keep an interest into it or else she might get bored and don't want to learn anymore. Show some VODs and have her engage in asking questions. Just have fun playing SC for now. Play lots of team games and build up all the basics. Watch some Proleague and Starleagues together.

I think it's much better in person. Play in front of her and explain what you're doing and why and then play next to each other and have her play as you coach. Gotta be really patient.

Not a single double entendre, so disappointed at this thread. When I try to teach people who have never played games before I just tell them to pretend it's sim city in Iraq and build a lot of "houses" and "amy people". Worked moderately well, at least they had units and didn't build 1000 turrets.

yea just break it down to the basics and allow her to understand what you need to do. if she's a fast learner then it works out better but if she's slow then it'll just have to take the long way. but also consider that it depends on whether they are interested or not too.

korean vods are good. watch enough of them after having a basic understanding will explain a lot. They break it down so it's easy to understand according to what most ppl tell me. They'll apply it to real life situations or something like that I don't remember lol... but yea they help improve extremely fast
