Funny, because a lot of the really hardcore RPG crowd argue that Bethesda/Bioware don't have *enough* of those elements.

edit: yeh that is true X_X idunno why i turned this into a jrpg vs wrpg fight

To be fair, there is a logic to it--the Western RPG tradition grew out of tabletop RPGs (which used the terminology before video games really started to grow). The experience of a tabletop RPG has nothing to do with loot and stat allocation, but about interaction, story-building, and decision making. To that end, it's understandable to expect a video game that inherits the term "RPG" to stay true to those things.

JRPGs grew out of a different design philosophy, that, while in no way inferior, *is* taking the terminology from something that has an entirely different set of priorities.

@ the OP:

Morrowind - While I am not the biggest Morrowind fan (much preferred the other 3 games you were going to use), I actually prefer it in this slot. KotOR is relatively shallow compared to many other games in the genre, and Fallout/PST have the opposite problem--they're much less approachable for someone relatively new to the genre.

CoH - The CoH hate needs to stop. While I'm not sure I agree with the statement that CoH is better than Brood War, I will note that I think it's an unfair comparison since CoH has not had 10 years for people to discover its depth (in fact, I believe a lot of competitive players think the expansions killed the game).

Very controversial picks. JO:2 as FPS and CoH as RTS...

For FPS I'd probably pick some Battlefield (preferably 2) or CS.
CoH is... well, CoH. I don't like it. The "control region" crap, the point based system, the gameplay, the WW2 setting ;/ I regret buying this game.
The RPG pick is a little more justified, but I can't really comment on that since I never played Morrowind. Maybe Deus Ex?
MMO I agree, since GW is free, which is an auto-win for me.
TBS: Never played anything beyond Civ II. I'd probably say Civ 2/3 or some Total War game, or simply Heroes 3.
Sports: I don't care. I don't play any sports games.
Hack n' Slash: Obviously the King is D.

I agree that the atmosphere in D1 seemed better than D2 at the time, but going back a few years ago I realized it was just the age at which I played them....D2 is pretty much exactly like D1 except better in every respect.

Online play in D1 was a lol too....get the best items in the game 5 min after starting a char....duping is actually possible ingame without any hack, hilarious....

Archangel's Staff of Apocalypse...

Anyone remember "ya", the mana potion you wear on your head....gives one hit kills on every monster in the game...fun stuff
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Nice picks, I remember playing jedi knight for the first time, it was a ok game, going around shooting stuff, but then when I got to that part where you have the first lightsaber fight in the hangar, blew me away, loved the game ever since. I tried playing morrowind on several occasions before but my computer was too crappy, the a few months back I decided to give it another try, lets just say I missed 2 weeks of college, the game is amazing. As for rpgs in general, ive always favored Baldurs Gate, Icewind dale and Neverwinter nights, amazing stuff, asides from fallout 2 of course, finished that game like 30 times, I think I could play it in my sleep now, but it never gets old.

Right now im trying to find a game to play, I feel like ive played literally everything good that my computer can run. hell, the last fps i played were quake 4 and half life 2 (love half life so much, the first one was brilliant, but the second one just has that special feel to me)
So, if any of you wanna throw some games out there, new or old (but not too new) it would be a big help

I'm still playing D1 on occasion while I'm unable to play D2. Even though D1 has worse graphics in theory, it still looks better, and D2 bores me somewhere around Act 1 now, can't even make it to the Monastery without uninstalling it...

For me, it has nothing to do with age, more with the general atmosphere in the game.

And on the CoH > BW again. I'll admit it, I enjoyed playing CoH more than BW, hell, I enjoyed WC2 and WC3 more than BW too. Sue me.

I'll admit it, I enjoyed WC3 more than BW. Sue me.
but thats horrible! wc3 is a terrible rts game! clunky, slow reacting and slow moving units, random drops and leveling your character...
but wc2 certainly was awesome. i still remember how i loved the music, the sounds the units would make and the voice that briefed you on your missions. youre right, atmosphere was a lot more valuable for a game to distinguish itself from others at that time than it is now.

and i absolutely looooooooooooove morrowind!!! but it is troublesome to find and install all the good mods (not organized).

edit: its strange that i was even disappointed with oblivion and felt that it couldnt live up to its predecessor. it was different from wc2 and diablo though. i could enjoy d2 and diablo classic felt somewhat like a different genre, because d2 was more about rushing and slashing through your enemies to get to the next boss, while diablo classic was about getting through the whole thing alive (at least for me). with elder scrolls on the other hand i just couldnt stand the shinyness of oblivion and that made me quite sad.

I don't find this strange at all. Most people I know that enjoyed Morrowind did not like oblivion. Conversely, most people I know that enjoyed Oblivion had not played Morrowind.

strange, I played oblivion and morrowind, and even though I acknowledge them to be entirely different games, I enjoyed both of them quite much, and I played morrowind first. Morrowind is a much more complex and intriguing game, but oblivion offered me quests that brought more fun. In the end I dont regret playing any of them ,and would recommend them to everyone.

Goodish picks. Needs moar Deus Ex.

WTF are you nooblets talking about diablo > diablo 2. Bullcrap imo...diablo may have better atmosphere but it is less developed, and gets BORING later on because of no real change of scenery. Whereas DUDES, COME ON, Act 1 of diablo 2 is just pure amazing. Tristram, Deckard Cain, The Smith, Andariel's lair. Fucking amazing. And then Lut Gholein, what an awesome change of scenery. Third act pretty gay. Fourth act pretty awesome tbh. You guys are being like 'cool' for liking the older game, but I played both diablo and diablo 2 SO FUCKING MUCH and you just can't honestly take diablo 2 over diablo, diablo 2 just so much deeper and more epic.

Morrowind is better than Oblivion, yes, but Oblivion is more enjoyable playing experience if you just want to wander around the forest and explore shit.

Wouldn't really call it an FPS, but JO:2 is an excellent pick.

D2 did have a great atmosphere as well.

Then what is it? It's not RPG for sure. And games like GoW and DMC are very much just dumbed down Diablo with better Graphics

its clearly an action/rpg even though the action is very dumbed down. saying its not an RPG for sure is naive. even if you dont consider it one you can't call a game that has a leveling system and manual stat allocation a definite not-rpg

GoW, DMC, heavenly sword are hack and slashes. games with zero content other than hacking and slashing.

hack n slash is also synonymous with "garbage" generally

best hack n slash is No More Heroes

You forget yourself. The king of all hack N slash, Ninja Gaiden for Xbox

I recommend Severance: Blade of Darkness.

An old game, afaik it wasn't finished (as in refined, the game has an actual end) before it was published, but it's such a fucking awesome game.

It's an extremely gory and dark third-person RPG/Action game with a fantasy setting, but you can pretty much ignore the RPG part, as it only consists of you leveling up every once in a while and finding new weapons and possibly armour in some of the levels. But the action itself, along with the atmosphere make this game 100% worth playing, even with a highly lacking storyline. Gritty, dark, abandoned ruins and castles, with golems and orcs and dark archers and skeletons lurking in shadowy corners. The atmosphere of the game, is simply put, brilliant, and that's the sole reason it remains one of the most memorable games for me. The combat is very cleverly implemented, very crisp and realistic, and maybe I say this because I played this game at a young age, but it's so freaking hard and rewarding at the same time.

What's also present is a very subtle 'trademark' if you will, of older games like this one which were made with passion and effort (unlike today -.-) is at the finale of the game, when you defeat the last guy, you have an option to do an extra level called The Abyss. Now you don't HAVE to complete this last level, and it's twice or even thrice the size of a normal level, however it is FUCKING HARD as shit, it's basically one boss fight after another.

Anyhow on topic, I agree with most of the recommendations, and I'd like to add that there's a Jedi Knight game called Jedi Academy, which came out a short while after Jedi Outcast. It's basically a game on the same engine, and while the combat system has some definite improvements, the story is turned to shit, and the atmosphere/continuity is really lacking, I'd still recommend both games actually, but if you will try them both you MUST play Outcast first.
