Well i first got intersted in poker over a year ago after watching some poker on tv and hearing how SC players do good in poker like rekrul, fisheye , elky and tons of other ppl so I wanted to try out and learn little by little.
Started with a 100$ deposit on Pokerstars like 10 months ago and played only cash on the lowest possible limit. Back then i was a total noob. Didnt even knew the basics and ofc i was losing on a constant lvl. I didnt play much back then like 1-2 days per week and after i lost half of my money. Then I found out about pokerstrategy.
Started reading about the basics and learned tons of new stuff. Got the 50$ on some crappy room and started playing with the SSS ( 100% win yea right ). I was still losing and SSS didnt really work vs deep stack players + felt like i was on a really bad luck. Losing better hands most of the time.
After waisting those 50$ from pokerstrategy i lost the other half of my bankroll on pokerstars. After this i lost interest in poker and felt like poker was not really my thing.
After few months i read a blog here about poker and sc. Brtarolg was asking to get some sc coaching for return he would coach poker. And after i read his blog about how he played MTT only and being a winning player we started doing some sc coaching and poker coaching.
I didn really knew that MTT are much easier than cash games while coaching him sc he coached me poker. I was observing him on tables and just he teached me the basics for MTT strategy. And even got a 5$ present from him ( thanks <3 ) I started playing the lowest possible 0.10 cents 360 man tours and i was still sucking + waisted 3$ on cash games...
I started playing MTT from this January and i was sucking with like -40% roi and to -30% roi on Feb and to a whooping -22% roi on march. I preety much waisted every possible funds i had till then.
Well lets go to the last month. I won some 2$ on a freeroll and started from that. For this month i started playing much more ( damn you SC2 killing BW ) and felt like my game improved alot. Started wining alot and for theese 30 days i made 60$ playing 0.10c MTT + some freeroll for balkan only players. Today won that kind of tournament investing 0.30c ( buyin + addon ) and won a 25$. Felt so good like ive beated some progamer in starcraft (not that i have beaten some LOL). I even tried to play cash games because i was doing so good and went from +2$ to -10$ in one day and decided from then to stop playing cash games for good and concentrate only on MTT.
My ROI is like 60% with like 11% ITM for this month or 40% overall for the past 4 months. And im like half way to recover my initial 100$. Playing the 0.10c mostly for experience and after i get to 100$ i plan to go on the 2.20$ tours.
So any more experienced poker players here got some tips for me how to improve my game?? Hope i dint bored you guys to death ^^
Man after reading your story I'm discouraged from starting poker.. It seems like a long and hard grind like bw in the beginning, except you lose money from it.
What kept you going? What made you keep putting money in even though you were losing money? I want some incentives to really start poker, but I don't have any inspiration.
well from my experience the level in micro games ( SNG 10ppl @ 3$ on PS ) is terrible but the rake % is so high ... I can't give you advice for MTTs but in SNG you just have to be extra tight and have a good hand selection early on ( like QQ+ only maybe AJs / AQ+ / TT / JJ / if you have position or set mine if it is cheap ). Then when people gets eliminated you can become more loose. In the end you will be a winner but with a 15% rake it will take you a lot of time to build a semi decent rol if you cannot multitable properlyl.
i went 50$ -> 150$ in like 500 games ... then lost 2/3 of it when i bet on Idra during TSL lololol
I played for almost 6 months and grinded it up to ~500$( from initial 100$) and then started falling back( downswing) I've put a lot of time into it and in the end realized I want to have a life. I did cash games and they were really hard to beat( the higher you get, the tougher it is, and highest I've seen was nl25)
Time when you could just tighten up when you started to lose and keep the cash flowing is long gone. If you want to beat some poker limits for $ consider it your job for at least a year, 6-8 hours a day. And during this time you wont make any( you will improve but you won't be making enough for a living until you get to nl100 or something)

Comrade! I bet everything I had on PS on Idra too, not like I was still playing poker anyways. Thanks Rekrul for giving me my life back.
I would love to play poker, but I don't know strategy. I tried poker stars as well with $20, but I pretty much just hovered around $20, then slowly started to lose all my money. I think it's a very fun game, but I think the social aspect of an actual poker table would be far superior. Also, when I was playing some of the .10/.25 tables, i dont know if you can actually learn anything. It seems they are just as clueless as I am, and they all just bluff bluff bluff.
PS: If any poker players are reading this, and perhaps want some SC2 coaching (Platnium) in return for poker training like in the blog, PM me.

Play the $1.10 45 man turbos. Those things are some of the easiest tournaments on the internet if you have the slightest clue on how to shove correctly. You can get a ton of volume in on those very quickly.

Thanks dude ! Well i guess gonna switch to those when i get to 100$ . Or 60$ is enough to start right away ?
I started playing poker recently, too, just to see what it's all about. I bought in to Bodog (which kinda sucks, but it's the first us-friendly server I found) for $20 and I'm using the same short-stack strategy you mentioned on .02/.05 tables. I AM making money... at the rate of about 50 cents an hour if I'm lucky. So uh, I don't foresee myself making a living at this anytime soon. :p Plus it's kinda boring to just fold every hand until you get good cards and then maybe win a dollar... so I dunno if i'll really play much anymore.
I played a few multi-table tournaments, though, and those are actually fun. But I've consistently been placing at just below where people start to get payouts, heh.
Hmm, I play cash now but I think $60 is fine for taking a shot at those and I'm a huge bankroll nit, I'd try playing 10 or so of them and see how you do.
I find tournaments really fun, but I don't think I could only play tourneys maybe I should try but it seems to be more luck dependent but thats probably just speculation ... I started off on a massive heater on pacific poker going from $30 to $300 1 tabling full ring lol ... I switched to FTP, 6max games and 4 tables and went on a $250 downswing that I'm still recovering from hehe anyway here is some of the lessons I've learned;
Get rakeback , get a tracker like holdemmanager or pokertracker, top pair top kicker is a hand to proceed with caution learn about bankroll management and pot odds, implied odds you will find this in good books... watch videos of others playing, 6 max is harder than full ring in my opinion. Here is a good open range (6max) that I found, of course this is all relative you have to change the range according to the players stats and tendencies. The range is simple but adapting to other players is hard. (this is open range btw not calling range for example if a tight player opens utg you don't want to use the entire button range in this graph against him hehe

The chances of being a winning poker player while being unable to get to Platinum in SC2 is pretty much an impossibility.
that's not true at all...just because you know how to play poker, doesn't mean you understand the fundamental concepts of an RTS or even know mechanics of the starcraft game. Sure you can learn, but that's like me learning to play poker (it would take a while). It's perfectly reasonable to assume a liquidpoker enthusiast is browsing the teamliquid forums curious about the new and "improved" starcraft game.
i lost my initial 50$ at pokerstars and then went to play at mansionpoker for 200$. I lost and lost and when i was at about 50$ again i started playing MTT.
With my last 4$ i made 5th place in a 3$ MTT and got 400$.
The next day i palyed alot and when night came i won another 3$ MTT with fewer people, but since i got 1st i got 1750$.
I withdraw 1000$ and played with the other 1000$.
Since i used up to 200$/day playing almost every MMT table i got broke after about 2 weeks. I occasionally won some $, but in the end it was not enough.
Thinking back i surely shouldnt have payed the big buy ins like 50$ or 100$, but yea....the greed...
Oh and my last 3 tourneys were 50k, 100k and a 250k$ ones and at the 100k table i got really far and was like really far and went all in with A/K and lost to A/J. If i would have won the hand i would have been 3rd chipleader =(. This way i won just enough to go broke 2-3 days later.
Ah well i got my money out of it, but they gave me a really shitty € / $ course so i only got 710€ out of me 1000$
hehe my poker life is pretty good but I have played poker alot but for pokerstars only played like 3 weeks now.
My first week I went from my 20$ deposite to 60$ (from cash games). I played cash went down to 37, then 7 rofl (I no longer play cash games tournament games are much more fun imo).
So I joined a 2.20 tournament and placed 7th (10$ woohoo). Played again and won 30$ for an hours time thats not bad then won again and am now currently at 55$. I dominate at tournament and suck at cash . I know where to stay and play tournaments :D
