FLAC on iTunes and Windows

I'm not a huge fan of FLAC (don't argue with me about this. I'm not a hardcore audiophile, so I really don't care what you have to say about the format), but I have several albums in that format for one reason or another, and I'm getting kind of annoyed at having to listen to them through VLC.

I use iTunes simply because I like iPods, and tolerate its memory-hogging and bloat for that reason only. The actual interface isn't too bad. I like the way you browse for music in iTunes.

That said, I know there are things out there that can make Quicktime/iTunes run FLAC files, but I can't seem to find them for Windows. All the ones I've found have been for OSX.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.

Have you tried converting them to ALACs (Apple Lossless)?

I would love the answer to this.

I have lots of FLAC files but iTunes can't play them. I don't need them on my iPod, I just want FLAC to somehow play on iTunes! This would be useful!

I personally use foobar2000 for my music needs. It's fairly lightweight, and there's plenty of components you can download for even more obscure filetypes.

http://www.foobar2000.org/

That being said, if you're set on using Itunes, you might have to do some file conversion.

u need install a bunch of codecs to make it work, and honestly its a huge pain because youll still have problems with the library/burn/etc. functions.

personally, I would just switch to foobar2000 if you use windows/linux, or convert flac to apple lossless if you're on a mac

you might not be an audiophile, but im sure youll appreciate the fact that foobar uses less resources than WMP, is more customizable, and can do everything WMP does plus a lot more

another option is to get foobar but only use it to convert files. download the LAME encoder and just convert all your flac files to mp3 V0. you wont be able to tell the difference 99% of the time, and that other 1% of the time you'd need a very high end system to tell the (small) difference

I'm pretty attached to iTunes. Call me a sucker, but I really like the sleek and relatively clean interface... -_-

I'll try this out. Thanks for the suggestion.

That last bit you said is exactly why I don't like FLAC, lol.

God, I don't know what I'd do without masstagger in foobar. That plugin is amazing.

nah man youre better off sticking with iTunes

iTunes is WAY better than foobar. Especially at NOT being able to handle small music libraries smoothly and NOT being able to handle FLAC

It allows you to edit ID3 tags on groups of songs. For instance, say you have a folder of songs:
02 Queen - Another One Bites the Dust.mp3
03 Queen - Killer Queen.mp3
05 Queen - Bicycle Race.mp3
07 Queen - Don't Stop Me Now.mp3
09 Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love.mp3
10 Queen - Somebody to Love.mp3
17 Queen - We are the Champions.mp3

With masstagger, you can set up a script to input values for the ID3 tags like this:
Guess values from filename: %tracknumber% %artist% - %title%

This will recognize that the first part is the track number, everything up to the dash is the artist, and everything past the dash is the track title.

ALAC seems like a pain to convert to just to use iTunes. :/

If it were just me, I'd suggest foobar, but I suppose iPod compatibility and such is probably important to you so I'll not answer with that. (but...a nudge in the "right" direction wouldn't hurt )

Anyway, I think this will answer your question: http://flac.sourceforge.net/itunes.html
Xiph seems to have limited functionality.

Ah. iTunes actually has that kind of functionality already, but it's good to know that foobar doesn't lack it. I'm going to be downloading it to try it out, so we'll see how it goes.

That was an amazingly enlightening link, thanks for posting it, lol.

@Frag: Are there plug-ins of some kind for foobar that allow it to sync with ipods?

@Roffles: I'm actually going to try compressing the FLACs down to MP3s.

Why in the world would you compress FLAC -down- to mp3s :3 Enjoy the lossless quality! You can't be -that- pressed for HD space.

In any case, I forgot about foobar's iPod plugin. You could certainly give it a whirl and see how you like it. And there's always plenty of themes to go around if you don't feel like making your own (deviantart is a good place to start)

I would do so because lossless quality music doesn't have any noticeable difference when compared to high quality MP3s. I remember even reading of tests done on supposed audiophiles who honestly couldn't tell the difference between the two. The differences are only going to show up at high levels of hardware which I both do not possess nor have the money to possess. Anything below that will only show the weaknesses of your hardware, rather than enrich your actual musical experience.

I mean yeah, sure, 128kbps MP3 sucks, but who encodes at that bitrate nowadays anyway, lol. But I mean really, I have an internal mid-range Creative sound card, a mediocre set of overpriced Creative headphones I bought without doing any research (like an idiot), and a set of 4.1 Altec Lansing speakers I got in combination with a Dell computer I bought like a good eight years ago. I can hear the difference between FLAC and MP3 (and I've spent a good amount of time listening for the difference), and I just didn't find it worth the extra hard drive space and the headache of having to a) figure out how to configure iTunes to work with FLAC, or b) having to get used to and configure a new media player for the few FLAC albums I have.

Honestly, the hard drive space itself is a considerable issue. I have more than 16k songs, totaling to more than 53 days of music in varying MP3 quality...that's more than 130GB as it is. As of now, my music collection uses up a relatively small amount of my overall storage compared to my other media (photos, pictures, video, etc), which is already getting kind of tight. I have more than two terabytes of storage available after formatting between three hard drives...and adding another one any time soon for the sake of FLAC is really not something my wallet is particularly excited about -_-.

FLAC is nice to have, sure, and I'm sure it, or some other lossless format, will eventually become the general standard, but I also hope that by that time we'll be seeing 100TB hard drives go for less than $100 as well ^^.

On a rock or pop song I usually can't tell the difference, but I have a set of decent headphones and listen to a lot of classical where the difference is much more pronounced.

It also takes time to transcode though, I would never go through the hassle.

There's definitely a more pronounced difference in classical recordings, but even that's usually not that desirable...at least for me. Most classical recordings of an ensemble more than two instruments in size are of complete garbage quality in the first place, and those minute details that really stand out between one format and the other end up not really being of issue anymore.

Sorry, but I would like to ask this since this thread is already bumped by Mr. 1 post above me.

Does Foobar have auto-tag? I download a lot of music, and a lot of times it is tagged inappropriately and Winamp does it for me with just like two clicks of a button. That's basically a deal breaker for me if it doesn't :/

Also, if it has a built in file converter that'd be even cooler. Winamp is being buggy as fuck lately so I kind of want something else, you know?

In order to import FLAC to iTunes, we will need to convert FLAC to Apple friendly audio formats.

If you care the quality of the output audio, converting FLAC to Apple Lossless audio is recommended. You can visit this guide for converting FLAC to Apple Lossless at http://itunes-converter.blogspot.com/2012/02/flac-to-itunes-converter-how-to-import.html.
then import FLAC to iTunes for enjoy or for sync.

If you do not care about the quality of the music, you can convert FLAC to MP3, a versatile audio format across system and devices then import the converted FLAC files to iTunes. You can find the step by step guide at http://audioconverters.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-convert-flac-to-apple-lossless.html

Yeah like what many others has said, ALAC is the way to go. It's a pain, but necessary if you want that lossless quality. Kinda sad that fb2k doesn't work on Macs (AFAIK)
