Hey TLers,

My friends and I started chilling around playing Left 4 Dead 2 Co-op against zombies. We're all pretty bad at fpses in general but it's been a blast playing on normal. We're now trying advanced but we're always getting raped haha, we can't ever beat a final level and even normal levels are pretty tough.

I know that tips aren't gonna improve our accuracy rate/bunny hopping/whatever but they will still help quite a bit, eg

1. Any best guns/best combination of guns? I thought AK/assault rifle/nade launcher/sniper seems to be pretty good. The 3-shot burst rifle (dunno what its called) seems to be kinda bad because you can't really control how many shots you fire, and it doesn't have extreme dps or extreme accuracy so it sorta seems like the worst of both worlds.Shotgun seems pretty bad and there's not enough ammo plus it's really inaccurate. Your thoughts?

2. Pistol or melee weapon? So far from experience I think regular 15-shot pistol is terrible, really bad accuracy and damage. Magnum is ok but the melee weapons seem to be so much better because they have huge damage and can allow you to run through hordes. Also are there any differences between the melee weapons?

3. Pipe bomb or molotov? I think this depends on the situation, bomb better for masses of regular infected while molotov better against tank/witch.Thoughts?

4. Tips against tank/witch? Every time we meet one of these nasty infected at least one of us gets raped lmao. I heard you're supposed to use molotov against tank but witch is sometimes a big pain because she can block a crucial passage making it impossible to sneak past, you must kill her. And she moves faster than you so one person gets incapacitated 90% of the time.

5. Is it worth carrying around incendiary ammo or defib? From experience the former seems quite underwhelming and the defib is nice to have around in the off chance that someone dies but isn't really something that I'd carry around in lieu of an aid kit.

tl;dr post some of your l4d2 tips and help some noobs who get raped on advanced difficulty

From my experiences melee is the way to go nearly all the time, i prefer 'quick' ones ie samurai sword or machette (although im not sure there even is an attack speed diff but it feels like there is).
vs specials i prefer to keep the high powered sniper myself because it has a high rate of fire, is extremely accurate and is powerful (one/two headshots for most special infecteds?).
Try not to set off witches, if you do use nade launcher to stun her (is useful to keep a variety of weps in group). Or try and bug her by leading her round tight objects/corners etc.
Always molo the tank and don't put cars between it and you = bad idea!
Personally I always equip special ammo and carry med packs.
Hope this helps slightly!

Cool. I did notice that the swords *felt* a bit faster and axe/guitar a bit slower. And the high-powered sniper is the brown one right?

Its the larger of the two - I think the small brown one is the hunting rifle (from L4D 1). I believe it is the largest looking gun (with scope obv) and is black.

Some tips:

Melee weapon is preferred over all pistols. Except maybe a Magnum on maps like the first one.

Weapons in general don't matter that much, what matters is game sense and overall skill. (Basically a skilled player won't have issues with any weapon, all weapons can shoot at fast enough rate to kill Zombies / Special Zombies.) Of course, pick a weapon your most comfortable with. My personal favourite is the AK and one of the Sniper Rifles.

A good Combo against tanks though is 2 shotguns and 2 rifles.

You can instant kill a Witch with a automatic shotgun by just standing next to her and aiming at her head and firing away. (You need to be fast though)

Get to know the maps, Pipe Bomb is always better, but you need Molotov against Tanks if you intend to clear it on Expert Mode or intend on playing Versus Mode.

If you throw a Bile Jar out from a window, the zombies will follow it and fall to their deaths.

Melee weapons 1 hit a Special Zombie so using one if your close to your friend might in certain cases be faster.

With Green health you run faster then a Tank if you run in a straight line. (Important especially on Expert Mode.)

Uhh, those are on top of my head, I'll post more if I remember.

1) Do no discount shotguns. They have great damage, and spread. Clearly you shouldn't be trying to snipe stuff with them, but someone with decent reflexes out in front can really clear a path. The 3-shot (SCAR) rifle is very good. The 3-shots are JUST slow enough that if you drag your mouse, you can get multiple headshots. The other weapons are actually all pretty darn good. If you get the big miltary auto-sniper, its a 1-shot kill with penetration, so its not a bad idea to just run with it un-scoped. The only weapon I'd say isn't great is the grenade launcher. Whoever has it just isn't doing much to help the team with it. TL;DR: Use shotguns.

2) dual pistols ain't bad. single is pretty terrible. Magnum is easily the best weapon in the game. Its a 1-shot kill anywhere and has infinite ammo. I really dunno what more you could want. It pairs VERY nicely with a shotgun (magnum for mid/long range, shotgun for closer, just keep you hand on the quick-switch key) Melee is very good, between it and magnum is just a preference thing imo. TL;DR: Magnum is the best gun in the game.

3) Yup, its situational. Always try to have atleast one player with a pipe-bomb incase things go to hell. They should call for it to be thrown in that case, and everyone should run to take advantage of it. Molotov is best used for holding ground, as it just kills everything in the area for a good period of time. One issue is that the molotov is basically useless on swamp fever, as the water puts it out. Bile-bomb is best used on tanks to 'tag' them, so they show up through walls. The damage output it gives isn't actually that helpful. TL;DR: pipe=rescue, molotov=defense, bile=tag

4) Tanks are not that bad in 2. Molotov, and then run-away works (takes what, 45 seconds to die after that? Remember that molotov does NOT deal damage, so shooting a flaming tank doesn't kill it faster! The molotov just starts a *timer* that if expires, will kill the tank.) Technically, the fastest way to kill tanks is melee weps, as each takes of 10% of its health per hit, but that can be tricky. Really, you should just fall back shooting it, try to trade aggro so it doesn't finish someone off, and use pills if you've got them. Witches are just planning. If you HAVE to take one out (very rare) just back off, and get everyone to start shooting at the same time. (Unless someone thinks they can properly do the 1-shot from the back, then have them walk up and pop its head) TL;DR: Fall back from tanks, plan for witches

5) IMO, no. If you get incendiary, put it down and have people grab it. Its worth trying to use your magnum more when you've got special ammo, so you conserve it for when you need it, but really just use it. Explosive rounds = dead survivors in my experience. There isn't a huge benefit to them, especially for shotgun users. Be very careful if you get these. The defib is nice, but no one I play with picks it over a medkit. Remember to try and conserve your medkits for when you go b&w, and not to just use them the first time you go to like, 15. TL;DR: Don't carry special ammo around, medkits have highest priority.

Whew, longest TL post ever. Hope that helps some. I've played a LOT more L4D1 than 2, but my team and I have been able to do most of the 2 campaigns on realism/adv or exp. without TOO much trouble.

Hmm some very helpful advice here but there seems to be some very conflicting views about magnum vs melee weapons.

1) magnum > dual wielding pistols > melee weapons - in terms of effectiveness
but melee-ing is just soooo fun!!!

2) dun be a newb and always go for the headshot > < especially smokers since they're stationary

3) conserve ammo: use ur secondary more, etc etc, snipers last really long, etc etc, if u find urself running out of ammo all too often on short maps, practice ur aim more

4) shotguns suck imo

imma newb hopefully that helped > <

I use magnums when vs ai (not in a versus game basically) because they are so much fun.
They can be used effectively at any range vs anything, esp when doubled with a shotgun as mentioned before.
However, I find that time and again melee is alot better because if your main (assume shotgun) runs out of ammo and you need to fight off a ton of zombs then magnum/pistols < melee. You run the risk of taking alot more hits due to reloading constantly, and on expert this will mean a large loss of life.
Also as already mentioned, melee one shots specials which is incredibly useful in the middle of a fight. As so many times I have found myself reloading and a team mate gets chargered next to me and im impotent.

The Magnum is amazing since it's a 1hit kill, so going slow lets you conserve shotgun/autoshotgun ammo just by magnum'ing everything. Melee weapons are definitely good though, and for enormous groups of zombies they're irreplaceable. One or two people should probably carry a melee weapon.

Also, although the melee weapons kill tons of zombies, it tends to have people backed into a corner, and your health disappears faster than you'd think. Meleeing is really fun, since you get lots of kills, but you have to be careful. Fast melee weapons like the pan, the sword, the machete are the best. Interestingly, I believe the pan is actually the fastest weapon, so its good for killing tanks (if you dare) but the sword/machete have far bigger range.

Melee weapons are good to have if you plan on being the person who sits in a doorway or in front of the group using the right click melee (shove) to protect the party since the shove has a fatigue timer, you can alternate shoves with melee weapons. Still, make sure some of your party has magnum/pistol as they are less likely to set off the witch IIRC.
sword/machete = chainsaw > guitar = axe and maybe pan > the rest. sword and guitar are slightly faster so I like them better, but chainsaw and axe hit more. Sword/axe/chainsaw one hit kill always, the rest less so. However, the guitar is required on the finale of Dark Carnival
2 shotguns 2 rifles is good for most maps, but sometimes you need to switch that up, especially for finales.
IMO grenade launcher is fun but sucks because of the limited ammo. The first shotgun is pretty bad, but the later ones are good, same with the hunting rifle.
Pipe vs molotov is also quite map dependent, but make sure to carry a balance of them. Tight areas and event triggers can be blocked by fire, but there is normally enough gas tanks if you use them well (keep them near and throw them out between waves). Fire does damage the tank in vs mode - keep that in mind if you play vs. One question: the fire timer in campaign doesn't reset if the tank enters water and you relight him right?
I don't like the bio bombs because the just end up summoning more zombies to deal with while fighting the tank since it typically runs right past them and then the purple wears off.
Medkit > defib normally since there are respawn points, in vs it is good to carry one defib, but you should be using medkits frequently in vs anyways. Just use the incindi/explosive ammo when you get it if you don't have room to carry it.
Always aim for the head especially during hordes, with the possible exception of smokers(who have got someone). If you don't feel confident, then it is best to kill the smoker consistently since at least one of your party is trapped.
I can already see the ending

1. How about AK/AK/AK/AK w/ laser sights that seems like a pretty good combo to me Basically use whatever weapon you want EXCEPT sniper rifle or nade launcher (unless you're using the nade launcher specifically for one tank/witch/horde and can get a primary back. Or, the sniper rifle... no, I can't think of any situation where sniper rifle dosen't make you useless).

2. Melee weapon. ALWAYS. (except first part of Dead Center where there is no primary, 2 ppl on pistols there)

3. Try to make sure someone in your party has molotov/pipe at all times. Pipes are nice for 'oh shit' horde situations, but you need to have molotovs for any chance at the tank.

4. We typically just have all 4 people focus fire down the witch all at once... witches in L4D2 are a lot weaker than L4D1 from what I can tell, they go down fast. The witch always chases the person who shot it, so you can have one person shoot and run the fuck away while the other 3 mow it down.

5. never carry incendiary ammo, just plop it on down where you find it (unless you don't have a kit and you want to save it for a tank or something... but it should never take precedence over a kit/defib). If you come across a defib and nobody has space, leave it if you're all at good health, take it if someone is really hurt (heal them then take).

From my experience, having a mix of assault rifles and shotguns is the way to go. Unless you're in a good position or are well coordinated with your team, grenade launchers just slow you down and/or does unnecessary friendly fire. I only ever use it to mess around. The desert rifle is good if you try to go for head shots most of the time. I really prefer the M16 over it in all cases though. You really have to conserve your ammo a bit when using shotguns. Shotgun pellets pierces through any number of infected so try to shoot clumps of them when you can.

Personally, I rank the secondary weapons in this order: Magnum, melee weapon, double pistol, single pistol. Magnums are AWESOME if you have decent accuracy. You can one shot any normal zombie if you hit anywhere (even in Advanced Realism.) I generally don't use my primary weapon when I have a Magnum (except vs tanks or panic situations) so this allows me to save the clip of special ammo on my primary if I run across it. Melee weapons are almost necessary during parts of levels where infinite zombies spawn. Other than that, they're good for taking down tanks, witches, and mobs. The katana and machete seems to be the best melee weapons. They just 'feel' better for some reason.

Personally, I prefer pipe bombs since you can just keep going after throwing it. Burning a witch is kinda funny, but generally not worth it imo.

A witch can be killed in 4 melee weapon hits. Two guys running up to her simultaneously and hacking her up will kill her before she can strike. Two guys with auto-shotguns can do something similar. If someone has explosive rounds, those will stun her and just have the other people unload into her.
As for the tank, just have the guy that the tank is chasing run away from it. Shooting it while running away will slow it down a little, but be careful not to run into a corner or get stuck on something. Also, be very careful not to get close to or lead it to cars or such that it can send flying with a punch. Getting hit by a car or dumpster will incapacitate anyone it hits. You can kill the tank quickly with melee weapons or shotgun blasts at close range. If someone gets incapacitated by the tank and the tank continues to pound on that person, you can have someone else run up to the tank and shove its back to pull aggro. Exploding a well placed propane tank will stun the tank for a few seconds too.

Personally, I pretty much always use special ammo as I find it unless I don't have a med pack or defib on hand already. Carrying around a defib is a good idea if you're playing on realism and/or harder difficulty settings, but not so much otherwise (unless you just have space for it.)

Some other tips:
- Having good communication between your team mates and keeping each other within line of sight helps tremendously in this game.
- Zombies all have the same height, so if you have a rapid fire weapon and are on flat ground, shoot small bursts at head height.
- Shove zombies that are surrounding you, then shoot.
- Use your pistol (if you have one) to pick off stray zombies to conserve ammo.
- If you're surrounded and can't get away, crouch so your team mates can mow down the zombies by shooting over your head.
- Keep an eye on your team mates' health and distribute healing items to maximize survivability.
- People at the front of the group should crouch when shooting so people behind them have a clear shot.
- Crouching increases your accuracy dramatically, especially for picking off things in long range. (Doesn't really apply to the hunting rifle / sniper rifle when zoomed in though.)
