dear friends, new friends, old friends, unknown friends, close friends, distant friends, potential friends, an everyone else
this is marc kelly (hi)
(if at any point you want me to stop talking, the delete button located either near the top or at the bottom)
i hope it's okay i found my way into your inbox again
today is April 7th, 2010, and i am sending this message out to you and to everyone because, after tomorrow, i may not be able to speak to anyone on campus again because the University is sending me to prison
<> note before reading further: i never payed attention in english class very much and i always got my friends to tell me what happened in the books we were suppose to read and instead of writing essays i doodled funny pictures on the pages and got bad grades and i never really learned how to write properly so sorry for all the the language inconsistency i hope there is not too much grammatical non-conformity for easy readability this is an emergency and i am writing with urgency so please don't hate on me for speaking to the whole community simultaneously without a university degree <>
what i am trying to say is: this message could be the last you ever hear from me
the last i have never met you
never
talked laughed pondered or explored campus with you (the only thing what else are we here to do?)
the last of our separately diverging paths
decided for
by neither me nor you
.
so most of you don't know me, though it is possible a few of you may have heard a thing or two about me already, most likely through stories and tales passed along from mouth to ear, spread wide and near, printed on newspaper always never clear, facts changing with each iteration by those who can't help not knowing how they participated to create a world of false fear and mass stupidity
*This Thursday @ 1pm, inside Tabaret Hall, I will speak publicly.
Then: I will be taken to jail by the University. *
*See how they threaten me?* * * *From: Claude J. Giroux <Claude.Giroux@uottawa.ca>* *Subject: RE: Urgent (Medical), Request to Rescind No-Trespass Notice* *To: Marc Kelly <marckelly.uottawa@gmail.com>*
*Mr. Kelly,*
*Please provide me with the time and date of your appointment so that I can notify my staff and let me know on which floor your doctor’s office is located at the Health Services clinic. This is only considered a temporary access for medical reasons. Access will only be allowed to this specific building (100 Marie Curie) and you will be requested to leave campus once your appointment with your doctor is over with. If you are seen anywhere else on campus, you will be subject to arrest for breach of trespass, and other police action. *
*Claude Giroux** Director, Protectron Services*
but if this message fails to reach all of you, probably intercepted and censored by the University, I could stay stuck in a prison cell until early next year after the court case is all cleared. so this is my last chance to explain, in as much detail as i can, why I need each and every one of you to come out and stand by me on thursday
*i need each and every one of you to help protect me from the bizzaro university! if you came out tomorrow, i'd listen to everything you have to say to me too!*
i love this world. i love our society. i love you if you are my friend. i love you if you are my enemy
(but I do not love this country)

* *On May 14th, 2009, three Ottawa Police Officers were sent to my home apartment by the University. They entered without a warrant, and they arrested me while I was sleeping. I was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada for "speaking directly to" the President of the University, because I asked him a question on March 4th, 2009, during the Q & A of his inaugural lecture series. * * * *YOU CAN WATCH THE VIDEO OF ME ASKING AN ILLEGAL QUESTION HERE: fast forward the video, my question starts at 1:11:35
I DO NOT THINK IT IS OKAY THAT IN THIS COUNTRY A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA CAN BE ARRESTED BY THE POLICE AND PUT IN JAIL FOR *ASKING A QUESTION*
*aren't we not always taught by our professors, "there are no stupid questions" ?*
if illegal questions exist, does that mean there are indeed stupid questions too?
if that's true, then what's the difference between an illegal question and a stupid question?
is a stupid question also an illegal question, and is an illegal question always a stupid question?
in the year 2013, could the President of the University be a student?
well thatz all I have to say until the police come to arrest me for talking publicly on campus this thursday (that's tomorrow!)
have a nice wednesday everybody

I overheard some other people got this email too, I guess almost everyone got it (well those going to uOttawa atleast).
I might even go and see what he will talk about. Though I have yet to see the video.
Umm, I'm a bit confused still. What, exactly, is he going to jail for? Was he banned from the university for something he said/did and thus is trespassing? What exactly is the situation?

Maybe he said "CAN I FUCK YOUR SISTER?" to the university president..

Still confused, how do you get arrested for asking a question? My understanding is that he is being/going to be legitamately arrested by law enforcement. Since when does a asking questions lead to arrest?
"Arrest and Banishment On December 1st 2008, Marc Kelly was arrested after filming the University of Ottawa's Senate meeting . Marc Kelly has been subsequently banished from the University of Ottawa by the Central Administration." http://wikibin.org/articles/marc-kelly.html
edit: He could just be being smart and getting attention so the University has to drop the case or risk some uprisings. Or maybe he wants attention for after he graduates and wants a job. I don't know.
I just think it's silly to arrest someone to take a video of a press conference in a democratic country, and ridiculous to arrest one for asking a question.
There are actually a bunch of questions that are illegal to ask, and it's also illegal for anyone to tell you waht these illegal questions are.
Or so says this Nobel laureate and distinguished quantum physicist, in this book detailing his frustration with the corruption in our academic and industrial niches of society, and how science has strayed from it's roots.
I just think it's silly to arrest someone to take a video of a press conference in a democratic country, and ridiculous to arrest one for asking a question.
You can't be arrested for asking a question, and probably not for taking a video. I can only assume that there must be some underlying issues here that we don't know about if this kid is actually being arrested/was prosecuted.
On April 08 2010 09:19 Kenpachi wrote: The question was something like Im asking, would you, Mr. (name), could you drop the charges for (something he did before)
So he was asking for charges to be dropped for something he did earlier? I can't get the video to play on this fancy computing device.
He was arrested while giving some kind of political presentation..... Basically, I don't see how any of that could hold up in court, so it was probably something else that he was charged for, and he is trying to misinform people. Chances are it is for trespassing, or something of the like, which is his own damn fault.....
LOL Ottawa Universities. I took a course for summer school in Ottawa like 3 years back and it seemed Israeli apartheid was a huge deal over there. I don't understand how they can allow such blatant hate propaganda.
He may be an 'emo' or an 'attention whore' or whatever label you might choose to indicate that you don't like this guy who you know very very little about. Regardless, the dude is being mistreated by a Uni president who seems like an asshole with a big head.
I'm pretty sure he is going to be arrested for trespassing after being barred from the University. That's what it seems like. It also seems like the circumstances under which he was barred are unlawful, but he hardly has an incentive to provide any information that would indicate his prior arrest was justified.
I've got a hunch this kid is some obnoxious know-it-all in-your-face political activist who was arrested for trespassing and/or disturbing the peace, and is trying to convince himself/others that he's really being persecuted for his beliefs, instead of being jailed for being a social nuisance.
“When they asked to prove that we owned it, I went to get the lease. In the meantime, they entered our space anyway. When I produced the lease and asked if they had a warrant, I got frustrated and swore.
“I was told not to swear to the Ottawa Police. And when out of frustration I left and swore over my shoulder again, they came and arrested me.”
That's someone else, not Kelly, but he's at the end of the article so I think that's the issue he initially got arrested for? So for trespassing, and then for swearing? Really? So Canadian Bacon was true?
Man, buncha crazy canucks. Keep that jibberish across the border.
The little article about the machete guy was pretty messed up though. Sounds like the stories you hear about over seas. To hear they are trying to segregate and instigate those cultural differences in Canada is kind of ridiculous. I'm sure it has to be a small minority that are doing these things, but to threaten the lives of other students on the street seems... I don't know.
This is just plain stupid and wrong. FUCK U CANADIANS! I'm so glad I live in The United States of America. This has officially convinced me to never go to Canada, NEVER

yeah imagine if you go there and decide to speak directly to the president while trespassing during his inauguration meeting

Wikipedia said he didn't ask a question, he played a recording of the University President swearing at him in his office.
No he blathers on for a few minutes and then the MC-person says "Is there going to be a question?" and then he gets mad because they "aren't giving hima chance to speak". Thhen he asks the president to call the judge on his court case or some shit to get the charges dropped, then the president says no, then the guy gets outraged saying the president doesn't understand that uOttawa is oppressing peoples' freedom of speech, then the MC just lectures him about how he's being an asshole and they move on to the next question.

So its his fault? (couldn't download the plug in to watch the vid)
well i still don't really understand what he was really arrested for, but at the very least he's a douchebag. also he's facing a maximum sentence of 6 months, so worse atrocities have been committed.

It's a little more complicated than that..... Seamus was doing a lot more than just swearing at the cops..... I was there.....
Tell!
Kelly sounds like he has some deep seeded issues, but I'm not sure that warrants and arrest.
Here's the gist of it. A certain student was barred from being on university property. He came to visit the SFUO office for something. Technically, it is not the property of the University of Ottawa, but there is no physical way he could have gotten to the office without passing through University property. The police were called to arrest him.
A confrontation between Seamus and the officers happened. They didn't believe that the office was not University property, and since it was, they had no legal right to arrest the student until he stepped out of the office. Seamus made a deal with the cops that he would go get the deed to the office to prove it.
By the time he got back, the student had been arrested. He flipped out, started swearing at the cops. The cops told him to settle down, and he didn't. One thing leads to another, and he's in the back of the cop car.
It's a little more complicated than that, but there was definitely some bad decisions made by both parties.

HELP HELP I'M BEING REPRESSED
There are two options here. The first is that you don't realize how stupid and hypocritical what you're writing is. The second is that you are purposely doing that, and trying to be satirical. My gut instinct is that there is something like a 99% chance for the former and a 1% chance for the latter.

Wait a minute, this student was arrested for exercising his freedom of speech???
Also, it says that the police entered his home WITHOUT a warrant which if i may recall is a serious offense to a person's privacy and personal issues. This should go in favor of the student and the university has some serious issues. I bet the judge was being biased towards the university because he/she got into the system politically with someone's help. Unbelievable.

Did this arrest take place in US or Canada?
Or you're making assumptions about a situation that you really don't know anything about...
I've been on his case for 2 years now. At first it seemed like he was being a stupid little nuisance, but the university has really blown it out of proportions.
I think I'll go out and support him, and any other UoO students should come too. Even if you don't support him it will still be a pretty big deal in terms of school events during your stay here at our lovely university.

These stories are so stupid.
Mental support? Like prayer or something?
Nah, but talking about it or looking up the story would do

I didn't read the OP, or any of the quotes or summaries, or any of the posts that proceeded it, but I just feel compelled to say that this is exactly why we should arm university students and faculty with firearms.
Hah, after reading on this shit seems like he had it coming. Being described as doing propaganda and being 'crazy'. Then breaking rules, idk but seems they did this with the rules backing them up and he seems too much of a douche for me to take his side morally
After watching the video, I hope the kids gets the maximum sentence. He practically is going berserk and doesn't let anyone else talk and just doesn't stop. I can only imagine the previous incident was him going completely crazy. Prison will do him so good.

If he had been charismatic instead of a prat he would have might have gotten the university to drop charges. Instead he made them throw the book at him. Should have been funny

Well, from the things that we do know it means that this student was wrongfully arrested so we i wrote from what the OP said but they may be other factors. Who Knows?
uottawa is an awful school, this incident notwithstanding. i tried a few times to register on a part time basis, and had a terrible time dealing with their administration

Oh it shone through. You know that Kanye thing? This kid basically did the same (and remember how well that was received) except: 1: he wasn't famous 2: he wasn't cool about it 3: he sounded like an angry chimpmunk 4: he turned into a complete bitch when he was called on his bullshit.

Marc Kelly is an undergraduate Physics and Mathematics student at the University of Ottawa. He is employed as a research assistant by Denis Rancourt.
...
Wireless Network Intrusion Detection Marc Kelly developed novel ways of detecting intruders in mobile ad hoc networks while employed by Defence Research and Development Canada.
Weakly Electric Fish Marc Kelly developed a state of the art model for understanding the physics of the electrosense in weakly electric fish while employed by the University of Ottawa's Centre for Neural Dynamics.
Those seem pretty impressive for an undergrad...if only he weren't crazy this guy might have a bright future.
So, I went there and it was really interesting. The university did not call the police to arrest him, considering that we were not dangerous or anything. I talked with him a bit in the end. I find him very nice and stuff, and it's sad he is in this situation. He does not seem to want to do anything wrong. He just have one semester left to do and he just can't do it. Next Monday at 2:30PM, I will meet him again and we will "assault" the Senate with a bunch of people.
