Ok so suddenly my computer died/shut off, and every time i try to turn it back on it dies. So like i turn it on and after 1 second it dies. So is it possible to fix my computer by replacing the broken part? I don't want to get a new computer yet, mines only 4 years old. When I check the back, the fan spins only for a second and it stops, so maybe it has something to do with the power or something. If it isn't possible to fix my computer, is it possible to recover the data on the computer? It would be a pain to start all over again.

Thanks...

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that more details would help a lot. Eg what you were doing before your computer just died.

I was playing games when it died. (League of Legends). When I felt the fan, it was warm, but the PC itself was normal.

motherboard or power supply most likely

disconnect everything from the inside besides the power supply from your motherboard, try to fire on your computer, post results.

im gonna say 80% sure it's your motherboard and it will be $120ish for a new one to install yourself, probably $200+ for a computer shop to do it.

not worth it imo for the shop, maybe worth it if you can do it yourself.

also, post in here whether or not you can see lights on your motherboard atm (even if the computer is turned off, if there is power to the board there should be some lights in there)

I totally suck with computers, so i'm going to ask a family member to do it. Since I'm hardware illiterate, If i replace the motherboard, the computer should work and the data should be still there right?

And generally how long should a computer last? for like (personal use/gaming)

If I do decide to buy a new computer, I would still have to fix my old computer to get the data back right?

Not necessarily. You can get a data retrieval expert to do it... but that would cost some money obviously. There are other ways/methods, but I'm not entirely sure what you want or how it works.

Take a screwdriver open your case remove the PSU, put the new one and connect the cables to the mobo and drives ( and maybe GPU if you have one ).

Depending on how you organized data. If all of your data was stored on a specific RAID array that was built and maintained by a motherboard-specific controller, recovering your data is a tricky task, otherwise it's most likely as trivial as plug the HDD cable into the new motherboard.

Most likely you won't be able to understand what has happened, but the safest bet is to get a 100% working power supply somewhere and just see if it starts. I've had your kind of sympthoms 2 times, and one time it was a power supply, the other - motherboard. If replacing PSU (I didn't say "buy it", I said get it somewhere) doesn't help, consult a specialist, there can be several things wrong with your PC that I know of and several hundreds that I don't.

Yea since i don't understand how to do it, i'm probably gonna get some help. Probably the worst timing possible, since i need my computer and some files for school and spring break is over in 2 days. (on my laptop right now).

Assuming that computer power supplies are all the same, is it possible for me to use a power supply from an older computer to temporarily get my files on an external hard drive?

[Edit]
On the chance that i might get a new computer, what brand would be good for personal/gaming use. (if the different brands even matter) The computer that i have right now that broke down is by Acer.

They are not the same, and you should at least be looking for one with equal or greater amount of power in Watts it can sustain. There are other differences, but I think you should do fine even with a less powerful one if you just plug in the motherboard and nothing else (basically, you want to see if you reach BIOS). If your machine works with another PSU, just go and buy a new one, it's the easiest way.

Concerning getting your data, first, make 100% sure you weren't using a RAID array because a single write operation on one of the disks in the array will irreversibly (well, technically, it's possible to reverse, but very hard) break the whole array. If you only have one HD inside, that's not an issue, but if you have two or more identical HDD's (same manufacturer, same model, same capacity), don't attempt anything with your HDDs without a specialist.

is your computer bios beeping? if you can get the bios code then you can better identify the problem. as for recovering data, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle (assuming your hard drive didn't inexplicably die as well). you can buy adapters/cases for internal hard drives online for ~$10 and just keep them around as external hard drives after you recover your files. salvaging is always fun.

Trying to find a screw driver to open my computer. =/
Even if i clear the dust I'm probably still going to have to replace some parts.

well they said that the motherboard died. o_o

The guy said that, both my primary slots for ram are OK. but the 2 secondary ones are busted. Also that the dust could have been a factor.
the cost of getting a new motherboard - $450~ and getting a ATI Radeon 5770 - $260~ would cost too much, so i just bought a new computer, which was $1.3k~
