Someone on the PLU.cn boards wrote some really nice Starcraft short stories, and I thought I'd share them. Here's the tenth, translated from Chinese at http://bbs.plu.cn/thread-1065239-1-1.html , original author "waiting22."
Treasure Island
“Um, excuse me, but, just where exactly are we going?” A harmless slooking little guy nervously glanced around him.
“The Protoss have secured an important island expansion. The expansion is important for us as well, so we have been ordered to go contest it.” A Hydralisk across from him answered.
“Oh…that’s to say, we’re going to war.” The little guy understood, but became more confused. “Um, then, what am I going for?”
As the words left his mouth, everyone around him stared at him…good point, what is this Drone going for?
Turns out the commander, in his rush to assign control groups, accidentally selected a Drone. Now that they’re almost at the island, it’s too late to rectify this mistake. The Drone is a part of the landing forces now too.
There is nothing more vicious than contesting an island. The Guardians are firing from afar, trying their best to damage the static defenses as much as they can. The Corsairs immediately respond and ruthlessly hunt down both Guardians and Overlords. The accompanying Scourge throw themselves in droves at the Corsairs.
Lightning flashes across the sky as the High Templars engage in large scale attacks against the densely packed Zerg forces. Many Overlords died with their cargo in midair. But the Zerg numbers are formidable, and a large number of Overlords still managed to make it to land and unload a large army.
The Hydralisks immediately engaged in battle with the Hydralisks, and Zergling are running everywhere, claws rending anything they can find. Zealots, Dragoons, Probes.
The Drone, fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) became a survivor of this D-Day. But, what will he do now? Join the battle? Nah, can’t help much. Might as well hide – that was the Drone’s only thought. Out of habit, he ran to the mineral lines. The crystal patches are the only familiar sights on this entire island for him.
“Enemy breaching the mineral lines!” A probe, seeing an enemy dot nearby, began shouting.
“No, no, wait! Don’t yell! I’m not an enemy, I’m just a Drone! I can’t attack!” In panic mode, he didn’t even stop to think that just because he’s a Drone doesn’t mean he’s not part of the enemy troops.
“I think he’s lying!”
“Mine some minerals for us to prove it!” The Probes, mining nonstop, are consumed by boredom. Even though they live in constant fear of enemy troops, they also live hoping constantly for enemy troops to appear.
The Drone immediately picked up a patch of minerals to demonstrate.
“I really am a Drone! I didn’t even want to come here, it’s the commander’s fault – he accidentally put me in a control group. I almost died of fear back there. Spare me, guys, please?” the Drone begged.
“Hahahaha,” the Probes erupted in laughter, “We’ve always heard Zergs were stupid, now we see exactly how stupid they are! You’re all so ugly, your commander can’t even tell you guys apart!” The only thing the Probes were good at besides mining was coming up with insults for people.
Curiosity got the better of them, so the Protoss Probes decided not to report this seemingly harmless Drone to the commander.
A Probe built a Pylon hearby – a flash of light and he immediately turned around. This caused the Drone’s jaw to drop. “This is how you guys build things? That’s it, you’re done?”
“Yep. It’ll finish on its own later.” The Probes were more than happy to share work experiences.
“No way. When we have to build stuff, we have to turn into it…” The Drone couldn’t believe his ears.
“What? Bullshit. No way, how do you turn into a building? And besides, if you all turn into buildings, who’s left to collect minerals?” Now it’s the Probes’ turn to wonder in disbelief. They had heard that their allies, the SCVs, need to stay by a building until it’s completed, but to actually turn into a building? That’s impossible!
“It’s true. Why don’t I show you?” The Drone said as he turned himself into a morphing Hatchery.
“Wow, he’s so big now! It’s like a lung that’s about to explode!” This sudden change scared the Probes. “What’s he up to? We should report it now…”
The battle was still raging on, and as the Protoss was slowly gaining an advantage thanks to their Photon Cannons, the Probe came to report the situation.
“They’re building a base inside our base?” The Dark Archon couldn’t believe this. “What is this, suicide? I never heard of a tactic that involved morphing Hatcheries during the landing…” The brilliant and experienced Dark Archon is also taken aback by this new development. The deeply logical thinker never stopped to consider the possibility of a wild card behavior like this one.
“Then why don’t a few of us go tear it down?” The Zealots spoke as he prepared himself.
“Wait, not now. If they’re not afraid, then let them finish the Hatchery. When it’s done, then we raze it, and force them to waste more minerals.” The Dark Archon, good at adapting, decided he might as well take this gift. Besides, he also wished to maintain the troop numbers on the front lines. If the main army fell, everything’s over.
With this new, ugly…thing next to them, the Probes continued working in fear, waiting for troops to come clean it up.
Pa! An octopus-like biological entity exploded from the morphing egg. A layer of oozing “carpet” started spreading.
“The Hatchery finished, we need to attack!” The Zealot had kept glancing at the Hatchery, waiting for this. Just then, a group of Mutalisks broke in where the defenses were a little weaker, and began attacking the Zealots.
“Retreat next to the Dragoons!” The Dark Archon commanded. “Don’t worry about the Hatchery for now, even if they morph troops there, it won’t be that many.”
As the Hatchery finished, eggs immediately popped up. The Dark Archon was only feigning confidence to the Zealots – if the Zerg suddenly got troops behind their defenses, they’d be surrounded. He had been waiting for enough energy for a Maelstrom to end the main battle before dealing with the Hatchery.
“D-Drone! They’re making Drones!” The first batch of eggs popped to reveal two Drones. The Dark Archon had never been more baffled – are they so poor that they’re going to fight for minerals in the enemy base?!
Seeing this, the Dark Archon breathed a sigh of relief. If they just want some minerals, let it be. Later, not only will they kill the Hatchery, they can even get a few Drones.
In the main battle, the High Templar managed to get another Storm out. A group of Hydralisks fell. The banner of victory is about to wave! The Zerg troops are almost exhausted, and the Dark Archon didn’t even need to use his Maelstrom.
“HELP!” Just as the Dark Archon relaxed a bit, he heard screams from the mineral lines. Turning around, he couldn’t believe his eyes – six Ultralisks, massacring the Probes!
“Ultralisks? How did they get here?” In the face of the most powerful Zerg units, the battle-torn Protoss troops are losing morale. “A Nydus Canal! There’s a Nydus behind the Minerals!” A Zealot in the front saw a Nydus Canal, with countless Zerg troops pouring out.
“Kill the Nydus!” Against the Zerg troops, the normally collected Dark Archon was cool and collected. All of the troops, sacrificing everything, began attacking the Nydus. Even though they succeeded in destroying it, the Zerg troops on the island vastly outnumber the pathetic few Protoss left. A newly born Drone hide in an Overlord, and prepared to take the expansion after the Protoss is dispatched.
“We’re done here, we need to get out.” The Dark Archon said to the High Templar.
“How? There’s no Shuttle, we’re done for.”
The Dark Archon cast his spell – an Overlord converted to the Protoss army. Boarding the Overlord, the Dark Archon and the High Templar escaped. The other Protoss warriors will never leave this island now.
