Hey guys,
I'm doing a lot of traveling by train and recently I thought it could be a worthwhile distraction to have a logic "thinking game" to occupy myself with and enhance my logical thinking capability while riding the train.
I happen to suck at maths and always thought it would help my understanding in this department to just solve some logical tasks o/similar. As there are quite a few people on TL who study/work in the natural sciences and/or are interested in these kind of thinking games... maybe you guys could recommend me something to enhance my logical thinking without using a pencil or calculator

I find crosswords useful for that sort of thing. I never caught onto the whole soduko thing, though. Chess is also appropriate.

Sudoku is very nice, I always do them when I'm on a plane or really, really bored and can't play SC. Here you can find tons of them:
http://www.websudoku.com/
Basic Idea: - Vertical lines contain the numbers 1 to 9, each number cannot be used twice. - Horizontal lines contain the numbers 1 to 9, each number cannot be used twice. - Every of the 9 boxes contains the numbers 1 to 9, each number cannot be used twice.
A good strategy for beginners is to start with the number 1, see where there already is one and what other rows/boxes are excluded. Sometimes it is the case that only one possible spot is free where you can fit a number. If 1 does not fulfill that condition you go on to 2, 3 etc.
The interesting part are the more difficult ones, where you have to combine the exclusion of two numbers to put in a 3rd, so it is a very nice game of logic, try it out if you happen not to know it.

My favorite magazine ever is GAMES. It's amazing in terms of the amount of content it has with so many different types of pencil and paper puzzles (and even others). There are also always some really interesting articles and contests. There are 10 issues in 1 year, but seriously, each issue will last you more than a month to totally solve.

You might be able to get it cheaper from their website ... unfortunately I'm not sure if they ship to Germany =/.
