So, as a vietnamese-american, what I've noticed a lot recently is that on SC-related websites like TL or gosugamers.net there tend to be a lot more players from vietnam than there are from japan. I just wanted to hear some possible reasons for this from people, seeing as how japan is obviously a developed country and is not some kind of backwater ditch. One thing that instantly occured to me was the overall cultural difference possibly, but I'd like to hear any other ideas.

A lot of games that are not computer hardware demanding are popular in Vietnam. Starcraft is one of them.

As far as I know, Japan has a very very developed duelfighting gaming community. They're good at that by the same way Korea is good at SC.

Japanese aren't very big on home computers, let alone gaming on them.

It's all about cell phones and nintendo. When I did my homestay over there I was with a very well to do family, and when I asked to use a computer they had to dig some old laptop out of the closet.

Well, arcade gaming (like SFII) is really popular in Japan when compared to PC gaming and while I was there it seemed that most people didn't really use computers to play games that were really competitive like SC - single player RPGs seem to be more common.

There are definitely Japanese SC players. Goto JPN-1 on west or any other server there are at least a good dozen of players. I don't think they ever developed into a large enough community though.

Well there was that team Lzuruha that had all those Japanese people...

Like Network... and those two Japanese really cute girls... Ayumi? And someone else?
Too bad it turned out that Shakti was playing on the Japanese girl account(s) for WGTour a while ago and never got banned or penalized despite all the proof and matching hotkeys. And Network was a smurf.

I want to fuck Soulkey with a Zelderan.

When CS1.6 was in its prime, there were a lot of Japanese CS teams that were making noise on the scene. They definitely stand out in games other than fighters.

I do not claim to be an expert on Japan, but I think there is a very simple reason for this and that is the fact that PC gaming was never really all that popular in Japan. Consoles and handhelds have preety much dominated the Japanese market throughout gaming history. Even nowadays, you would be hard pressed to think of a Japanese company (outside of hentai/dating sim/Touhou project game developers) that produces games for the PC platform (and even then, the product is most likely multiplatform and aimed at the markets outside Japan as well). So it should come as no suprise that there are relatively few PC gamers in Japan.

That said, we kind of owe StarCraft`s popularity in Korea to Japan`s obssession with consoles/handhelds. Due to Korea`s (partial) ban on Japanese goods, consoles were never able to make much of a splash on the Korean market. This, combined with enormous investments in IT technology by the South Korean goverment, resulted in a enormous popularity of PC gaming, which provided fertile ground for a game like StarCraft.

EDIT: Also, the fact that PC gaming is not big in Japan makes it all the more nerve wrecking that Capcom never released the PC version of Gyakuten Saiban outside of Japan. T_T Another ironic fact is that there is a Japanese version of StarCraft.
