The title is pretty self explanatory. I have pretty horrible study habits. I know it's impossible to change from horrible to excellent overnight, but there must be some kinda things you can do to help improve studying habits.

Not gonna lie, facebook and tl.net are two of the biggest distractors when i'm doing homework using a computer -_-;;

Other than that, i just have a severe case of procrastination (due to gaming.. hon lol) and then by the time im "ready" to do homework at night, i get tired and say "oh ill just do it tomorrow..." <--- i do this every night til the day before it's due lol.

i know i know.. im a college study.. i should be more responsible, however, my horrible study habits from highschool have carried over to college heh.

i know i'm not the only one dealing with this problem, and for those of you that have coped and improved on this, was there anything specific that you did to help? any tips?

gracias!!

I go to the library to study, and unless I absolutely need my laptop, I try not to bring it.

what's your major?

the way I do it is I won't do work all week then I'll sit down and memorize everything, do all the readings all in 1 go.
I don't like stopping and starting, just doing it all at once.

that's what works for me anyways.

Go to the library and the "silent" section, where you must be quiet. Do not bring your laptop and stick to it. I do this once a week for an hour or two (my classes haven't really picked up yet, but near exam week i'll be living there lol)

Laptops make study/work nearly impossible. Either disable your internet or just dont bring your laptop when you study. Other than that it's a matter of sitting down and working at it =/

if you are studying anything related memorization....
grab a pencil and a scratch paper and write down the important stuff when you are studying..
in my case i just scribble the important words while i read
it helps me memorize faster
this way you can keep track of important info/vocab while reading and you can review those scribbles one more time w/o reading entire chapter again

...And requires that I have internet, since I'm in classes that actively require things like ssh connections, open sftp links, and http throughput testing. There's no way around the distractions but willpower, and I certainly don't have willpower.

Do it at night, or if you can study late then personally I think it will be more productive for you. But make sure that it doesnt fuck up your sleeping habit.

Oh and TL distraction, dont know its just me but I enjoy reading TL more after I have finished basically what I am supposed to do for one day

I'm dealing with a lot of trouble in this matter as I'm a college freshman myself. Try to get a studying schedule and set a certain goal for each day. Then either go to the library or turn your laptop/pc off if you're at home. Simply force yourself to stay and study.

I'm also pretty confotable with sleeping after I come back after my classes and stay up at night and study. Don't try to make it as your habbit unless your confortable with it though.
SonuvBob: Yes, the majority of TL is college-aged, and thus clearly stupid.

Make a time schedule in advance and stick to it. Also when you plan your schedule, don't plan to do your studying when you know your mind will fight you, such as when you know you will be sleepy, drowsy from a good dinner, drained because you've delayed eating etc. If you have to use a laptop, turn off all programs that can distract you, such as chat programs and browser windows with facebook in the title. Just decide to not open them until you are on free time.

I'm sure your college also have counsellors and maybe even have some short mini courses that deal with study habits. Maybe you should make an appointment.

Eat well, drink well. sleep well.

The trick to studying well is having a good routine. You must know exactly what you are doing at any given second.

It's easier said than done though.

Keep on top of things, find some study routine that works for you. Every one is different, some people learn by reading, some by doing, some by talking with others.

set yourself small goals. Don't make it out like you must finish this by tonight or else. Say to yourself, you will finish chapter one and reward you by playing 2 games of starcraft or having a nice burger what ever floats your boat.

It's really important that when you begin studying, you mind and body is at it's peak. Studying while tired or hungry do nothing for you. Absorb slowly, do it in steps, understand everything, once you have the concepts planted in your long term memory you are done.

Don't know what your schedule for lectures is but I would say get into a routine and routines take usually about 3 weeks for you to rest into and stop struggling against on average.

So if I was going to university right now I would say like...

8 a.m. Get up, breakfast, wash etc...
9 a.m-12a.m studying / memorizing
12 a.m. - 1 a.m. Lunch
1 a.m. - 4 a.m. Studying / Memorizing

It may seem a bit extreme but it's really not, whats extreme is wasting that time. This is less hours than working in an average full time job and you still have from 4pm onwards to do whatever you like whether it be tv, starcraft or other useless pursuits.

Use notebooks and not stupid sheets that you always lose or are too lazy to order.
Took me like 3 years of uni to understand it.

Get some sweets and fresh air in your room and never learn more than one hour... at least put a break for 10 minutes. After the break you can continue to study. Its really good to study in the evening, because the brain will go over the stuff again in sleep.

I started using these this year:

Pomodoro Technique: It's just studying for 25 minutes, then resting for 5 minutes cycle. I feel like it helps me study because it forces me to define clear goals for that 25 minutes. Of course, committing myself to the 25 minutes is a challenge as well...
http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/ for details on the technique, http://www.focusboosterapp.com/ for an app to help keep track of time

Productivity Sheets: I use http://davidseah.com/blog/the-printable-ceo-vii-resource-time-tracking/ for weekly/monthly task tracking and http://davidseah.com/blog/comments/emergent-task-planner-free-version-updates/ to plan out my day. The weekly/monthly sheets make me feel less guilty about slacking off if I know when exactly I'm going to study or do work. (Also helps against "oh, there's a midterm tomorrow?" situations) The rest of the series is pretty interesting too, I just found that those 2 help me the most.
