And seriously, if someone started fucking with my property (especially expensive property like a laptop), I would have gone completely ballistic on them. I agree with the way the OP handled it. Nobody has a right to pull that kind of shit.

sup freshman. Next time just lie, alt tab, and be more sneaky about poker. You handled it poorly and the TA stepped out of line, but you could have been the better man and just lied/hid it/stopped it... ...but you decided to be a bitch.

Sure, a lot of other people might not be paying attention either, but that's got nothing to do with you. Wouldn't you rather play somewhere else? Also, actually using a your mom joke as a comeback is just... -_-

The question isn't whether or not the TA was out of line, it's why are you so damn disrespectful? why would he be respectful to a person that he doesnt know (and thus hasnt done anything to earn his respect) but on the contrary has given him a pretty huge reason not to respect him? do you always suck up to authority? people get authority because other people (like in us) give it to them. authority on its own is no justification for anything. people being idiots is bad enough. idiots getting power the other thing. idiots with power misusing it are about as bad as it gets. screw them. if that institution supports such principles then you need a pretty good reason to support their existence with your attendance and money. i guess it comes down to how much you value your principles and how that fares against getting that certification you need to "get far in society". personally id say screw that kind of society. those values have nothing to do with me. Over and out. Is it harder for a person to maintain their temper and act like an adult, or flip out and act like a child?

As long as you are not interrupting the lecture you can do whatever you want in class as far as I'm concerned. Although you probably responded in a not-such-a-good-way you are definitely in the right. If you were not interrupting the lecture, you have a right to be there if you are minding your own business. Although it is kinda rude to the prof if you ain't paying attention. :p

You know, the TA have exactly the same reasoning on his side? Why should he respect this random idiot who goes to class to play poker? And then to top it off he acts totally disrespectful when you tell him that you don't think that it is appropriate! It is reasoning like yours that makes things like this happen in the first place. Now the easiest for him would be to just go along with the TA's request. The easiest for the TA would be to just ignore him. Both stepped out of line which caused the ruckus. You shouldn't taunt your teacher when they ask you to do something and the teacher shouldn't go physical on your stuff even if you taunt them. It doesn't matter how much you thought that it is ok for you to do what you did, if they tell you to stop then you should damn well stop. And they have to draw the line somewhere, I would say that it is quite a big difference between checking facebook and playing poker even though I wouldn't have interfered I can see that someone could have drawn the line there. The easiest way to get respected is to first respect others. Getting angry in a situation like this only makes it worse. It is a privilege to go to class, not a right. Paying for classes do not imply that he have the right to do whatever he wants there.

Seems like there are lot of those these days. Looking at it objectively... who cares what everyone else is doing? It's your education, if you were really an adult, you might realize he has a point and put the laptop away and try to learn something. Was he out of line? Probably, but I would worry less about his actions and a little more about your own.

Shame you didnt stand upfor yourself while remaining calm/refraining from cursing. I know its hard to control, maybe next time something like this happens you'll handle it better. I personally would probably talk to the professor about it, who does this guy think he is?

That being said as a technicality, in my experience classes sometimes are totally ok to play games and without comprising your learning. Some people can mulit task! I can think of a bunch of bad lecturers/ta tutorials etc that I wish I skipped in hindsight, and would have been sweet if i had entertainment hehe. Especially in highschool.. hindsight 20/20 I'd skip like 90% of HS classes and be better off for it, given how piss poor the teaching quality was here.
