Seems like there are lot of those these days. Looking at it objectively... who cares what everyone else is doing? It's your education, if you were really an adult, you might realize he has a point and put the laptop away and try to learn something.
Was he out of line? Probably, but I would worry less about his actions and a little more about your own. What are you his mother? Shit, if he doesn't want to pay attention,he doesn't have too. His education is his own personal responsibility. If he can play poker and still ace/pass the class, and be happy with it. That's his own right.
God you sound like whiny old people. YOU GOTTA LEARN TO BE RESPONSIBLY SONNY, YOU GOTTA BE AN ADULT.

If he doesn't want to pay attention, why even bother showing up? Just don't go to class. You can't really claim to be an adult and do stupid crap and expect people to take you seriously. Well you can, it just doesn't make much sense.
|
This is 100% a troll so I don't know why some of you even bother responding. Everything about this story is completely unrealistic.

Seeing as how everyone is on their labtop using facebook, aim, and playing facebook games ect, I told the TA "this is not highschool, I'm an adult and I can do w/e I want." People not caring about their education, sounds like high school to me.

You know, the TA have exactly the same reasoning on his side? Why should he respect this random idiot who goes to class to play poker? And then to top it off he acts totally disrespectful when you tell him that you don't think that it is appropriate! It is reasoning like yours that makes things like this happen in the first place. except he didnt just tell him to stop playing poker (which he simply could have ignored), but got his hands on his property and forcefully shut the laptop down. i dont see how the TA can get himself out of that with just relying on "respect".

That TA was out of line of duty.... he shouldn't evne be caring about what each student does in the class for hudnreds.

Play poker at home. It is insulting to go to a lecture and then just completely ignore the lecturer. You are an absolute shame of a student.

In the middle of lecture this random TA came up to me and told me to stop and close my window. Then the TA grab my laptop and shut it down while I was in a middle of a hand and told me to "stop or I'll confiscate it." I was completely infuriated and told him "Fuck you, that is fucking physical abuse, what the fuck is your problem." The TA then asked me to give him my name and tell him the name of my TA. I replied "My name is Osama Bin laden, and my TA is your mom." Afterward, I just left lecture.
I think I should stop going to lecture since they only take role and turn in things in discussion anyways. I don't want to get in w/e trouble with the dean because I didn't give my name when asked. Anyway, I feel that the TA was totally out of line, but im afraid that it is useless to tell the professor anything since the professor will just side with the TA. I can't do much here, he is the cop and I am the black guy caught holding a gun.
What is it you consider an adult?
I never agreed with not allowing students to use laptops during class, especially when you pay for the course. However, if the professor lets you know his/her policy, grow up and listen to what they say.
|
Holy shit, people are actually willing to punch someone in the face for touching their laptops? Grow up - if he grabbed your arm it might be more understandable, but it's just your laptop, who cares? People touch my shit all the time, I'm not gonna flip out on them for it. It's rude of the TA to do what he did, but to me it's about the same as if I was reading a book and he came over and closed it. It's not a slap in the face, he just touched something you own; deal with it. Suck up your pride unless you are planning to drop the course.
btw you are basically fucked now. The prof knows you're a dick (ofc he's gonna take the TA's side), the TA knows you're a dick. You might not fail the course but you'd better work your ass off for it.. personally I would just drop the class.

Suffice to say, OP is a retard.
Maybe it's because his parents paid his tuition for him.

TA out of line. What is a TA?

And seriously, if someone started fucking with my property (especially expensive property like a laptop), I would have gone completely ballistic on them. I agree with the way the OP handled it. Nobody has a right to pull that kind of shit. TAs basically help the professor out with things like marking. Sometimes they teach tutorials or cover classes for the prof as well. They're usually grad students of some sort.

Why should he read 8 pages worth of peoples' shit posting to answer the OP? He shouldn't, thats right.

If it was a she, it was prolly having a worse-than-usual period.

as somebody who plays poker in class, you need to do certain things:
-sit in the back -don't use a mouse -look at the teacher even if you're not paying attention -occasionally ask a safe question (like "could you explain that again?")
|
at waterloo, everyone does random shit during lectures on their laptops. Well not the math lectures, but the science/arts lectures its hard to find people actually listening to the profs.
But we also don't have TAs patrolling around... Only time you see TAs are if you seek them out in their office hours or go to tutorials.
