When i heard this i went like what the fuck is going on here (i'm dyslectic and seriously HATE WRITING) so i thought that was a pretty good reason to use my laptop why the fuck did i get this thing otherwise? So before i even noticed my entire class signed the contract and was not gonna give a shit and keep on facebooking chatting gaming w/e.
However I refused to sign that contract, then i got told to leave the room and wasn't allowed to follow that lecture till i signed the contract. So i went to the head exam commission or w/e those guys that SHOULD help you out if you have a problem with teacher or anything. But exactly the opposite happened they teamed up with the teacher (didn't saw that comming -.- NOT.). and 6months later this guy pretty much got me kicked out of school. GG
I went pretty far though, i seriously refused to sign that fucking piece of bullshit.
Wow. Was that really worth getting kicked out of college?

Step 1: Find a girl who is friends with you in that class Step 2: Get that girl to tell on him for sexual harassment Step 3: Report to the prof that this TA assaulted you and damaged your property Step 4: Get the girl to come forward and say that the TA is harassing her. Step 5: ?? Step 6: Profit! (get a free A, etc)

That TA is definitely a douche. If he really did slam down the lid of your notebook like that, then I would have told him to fuck off as well. You probably shouldn't stop going to lecture though, just because of that one incident. Pretty interesting story considering I didn't think TA's even gave a rat's ass about lecture. Maybe he just really respected the professor or something.

Most corrupt school ever, and was planning on quiting anyway basically took that course cause my friends took it when I just came out of high school.
Also my friend that together with me refused to sign the contract, actually was allowed to stay cause he didnt fight it as hard as I did. However he got fucked the year after (LoL indeed) guess they where never planning on letting us stay anyway. Bad for school reputation or something i dunno.

The thing is, I didn't stop because I felt the TA had absolutely no right what so ever to tell me not to use my laptop. I could be playing poker, reading class related material, and be taking notes at the same time. everyone in the class was using a laptop, and If I am not allowed to use my laptop because I was playing poker, then there should a class rule stating that you are not allowed to use your laptop at all.
1. I wasn't distracting anybody. 2. It was a large lecture, and everyone had a laptop out playing games anyway. 3. What ever I do with my laptop is quite literally my business. 4. The professor doesn't even care if you don't show up for lecture. As long as you are not distracting anyone, you are fine.
What right does a random TA (not even my TA) have to tell me to not play poker? Yes, I know that I should be paying attention, but is it against the law to not pay attention when the class got really boring and irrelevant? More importantly, even if you are the professor, I doubt you have the right to touch someone's laptop. You could tell someone to leave class, but you can't just mess with other people's property.
All in all, I felt that the TA was just in a bad mood and inappropriately venting his anger on me because I was the closest person to him.

no one asked you to be in the class...

I think a consensus has been reached that what the TA did was not right. However, in my opinion where you went wrong was the language you used. If you hadn't talked back in the way you did (which as i mentioned earlier is understandable, but not acceptable) then you would be fine and its the TA that could potentially be getting in trouble... though the root of this whole problem was your playing poker + the TA not approving, the real issue lies in the way you responded to the TA

Way to handle it the "adult" way. The question isn't whether or not the TA was out of line, it's why are you so damn disrespectful?
|
echoing what some others have said: you're both huge tools but the TA is a special douchebag.

Man, like russell peters would say "Be a man". Go talk to the prof and seriously explain the situation to him in a civil manner. Don't be like "OH everybody is doing it". Just be honest with him ie " I was playing poker because I need money and I had understood that part of the lecture you were explaining" then explain that you had no intention to being disrespectful to the TA had he not closed your laptop.
Ask him if it really bothers him to have your laptop open if you didn't bother the class. (By the way... is it possible that the TA thought you weren't even in the class?)
Anyways just my 2 cents

Hate to break it to you, but your feelings don't amount to shit in the classroom. The teacher and TA are the ones with authority in the classroom. It doesn't matter what laws you are or not breaking by playing poker. The classroom authorities can make whatever rules they want as long as they are not breaking the law.
Anyway, you're a fucking idiot. Not because you played poker during class, but because there's a good chance you jeopardized your grade by acting like a douche to the TA. Most college poker players usually breeze by school because they identify it as another variation of a game. Once you recognize the rules and get a good feel for each class, school should be cake. Unfortunately, you don't seem like a good poker player or you wouldn't be in this predicament.

Don't listen to Mayor, he sounds like a complete jerk anyway and a MASTER OF HOW POKER SKILLS TRANSLATE TO COLLEGE SKILLS. What a guy.
In all honestly. I think the people who are telling you that you acted out of line have some truth, but have no balls, while people who are saying you had every right to be upset do have balls.

Not everyone's brain can remember everything they learn, in fact I just graduated with a mediocre 3.2 gpa and don't remember ANYTHING. I don't remember anything from high school either. I went for the degree and that's what I got.

The TA was some guy sitting in the back of the room. The professor was the one giving the lecture.
To the guy who said poker players ace college no problem: That is quite the generalization to make considering how two of the best players were terrible at college and had to drop out (Tom Dwan, Phil Galfond), and the supposedly best poker player in the world never even went to college (Phil Ivey).
