For protoss players there is a big dilemma. The enemy is rushing down the hills in great numbers and you cant do anything to stop them. So you relocate to the choke in a controlled way. But in the meantime you can inflict damage to the rushing enemies while relocating. The question is do yuo use the patrol or the hold position in such a dire situation? Or is there no difference between H and P when it comes to dragoons.

I understand with other units there is difference between P and H but does that difference also exist with dragoons?

How is in this case patrol any different from attack move?

You use patrol to attack with your moving dragoons. In your case moving back? How is this a big dilemma? Also, hold position will make sure goons won't try to move somewhere to get into range of something they can't move to.

I don't think there's a difference since goons have an attack animation unlike vults or mutas. Although that's probably with patrol vs attack. asdghghf

I thought patrol concentrates fire on the frontmost of units.

patrol only when you don't want your goon to get hold stuck in a critical moment.

and it also make sure that your goons don't lag behind when he is out of target. this can happen a lot in battles.

I use attack move. I order them to move back, then attack move back, then wait the exact length of the dragoon firing animation and order them to move back again for the length of the dragoon cooldown. It's the exact same technique as moving dragoons in to engage in PvT or PvP, only done away from the enemy.

I've heard that patrol is always better... but I never knew the reasons behind it.

I feel sorry for toss players.. how often do goons bug out like that? Gols can do some weird shit.. but it has to be super laggy for them not to auto fire intercepts. sometimes a stray one will walk all the way to the opponents main like he's sargent york trying take on the germans solo

I think Bisu uses attack-move to defend, there was that absolutely insane moment at WCG on Heartbreak Ridge where he perfectly defused every mine that Flash surrounded Bisu with

I only use hold position early game PvT against FD-rushes or 2fac vult aggression, while at the same time retreating.

In PvP only hold position occasionally when I chase an enemy who's retreating. But usually in PvP you always FOCUS fire in most situations. Even when retreating. Oh and sometimes I use hold when microing large amount of dragoons vs speedlots. Or small amount of goons vs small amount of zealots. Basically in situations where I wanna minimize damage inflicted on the goons. Where I really need to keep them alive.

Mid and lategame there's just too much else to do, you don't have time moving your hand to the H button. Always a-move except in the situations above.

On occasion I will use HP for mines, but AM is my standard. I always keep my little finger hovering on the A key whenever I have dragoons selected.

interesting poll, I never thought of this as an issue. (as I dont think it makes as much of a difference as it does with mutas for e.g.) In retreat or when surrounded by lings i usually use micro with H (so that's what i voted), otherwise i use A. Dunno why.

I use attack move for everything with goons, or I'll specifically target things like mines or frontmost melee units.

Hold position should be used for mines, gives them faster reaction times. Attack move for everything else.

Don't know exactly but it's what all progamers use so I assume it is.

Patrol can easily make your goons freeze. I think that's why nobody uses it.

I use to use attack move when defending against an fd rush, but recently I switched to using hold and I find that it is much better in that situation. When using the attack move technique I found that sometimes one dragoon wouldnt stop to fire and it would keep moving towards where I told it to attack because it was just out of range of the incoming marines. This really fucks everything up, so I use hold now. Also, as the guy above said I manually select tanks or vults if the opponent is sloppy enough to let one out in front so I can pick it off.
How do the people who use the attack move technique deal with the problem I stated above?

I use attack move as Kwark outlined for general purposes... I find hold to work well in some cases though I do it instinctively so I can't remember for what off the top of my head. But most of the time attack move works fine.

I use always hold or focus fire.

I think goons are too dumb for the attack move.

If ever in a case of goons vs rines, hold is going to be much better than attack. Using attack causes goons farther back to run back into fire without attacking sometimes and the closer ones to move closer to rines even though they are within range. Hold prevents this from happening

Hold position is better when backing up vs terran. Patrol and attack move is the same in that scenario. Goons will spread apart and you will lose you magic box.

I generally use hold position when retreating. For other types of goon micro I switch between a-move and hold depending on the context. I never use patrol except when microing vultures.

Hold Position makes them shoot noticeably faster. Just test it out, its pretty obvious the shooting animation is much quicker with hold position than with attack move.

I do hold position if I'm against clumped units where focus firing isnt that great. Like hydras, lings, lots of vultures, etc. Against things like thanks I'll use attack and target the one I want to kill.

Hold position is the shit, yo.
