My thoughts on games between 2 S-class players

In recent light of the + Show Spoiler [MSL spoiler] +
Flash vs JD finals
I cannot help but think of all the matches where we have 2 really good players facing off against each other. + Show Spoiler +
We're talking about the top two players, both in peak form, both absolutely godly etc.

Imo every time we end up with such a confrontation (Stork vs Bisu, Bisu vs Jaedong, Jaedong vs Flash, Flash vs Stork, etc) it turns into a one-sided rape simply because each player is so good that the first one to make a mistake is so ruthlessly punished that it just keeps becoming an uphill battle for the losing player, and eventually a crushing defeat. Pretty sure that lots of people share this same opinion.

Thinking back to the Jaedong vs Bisu series and particularly their bo5 in GOM, all the games have been extremely one-sided but the series was ultimately very close. Sure the very first Bisu vs JD on blue storm was pretty epic but neither players were in peak, godly form at that time. And of course, Flash's recent games against JD in the OSL, vs Stork in PL were all very one-sided.

It gets to the point where the anxiety of the outcome is much more intense then the actual game. I ask myself, if I had missed the games live, spoiled the results and then watched the vods, or perhaps I didn't care about who won, or that the game was of no particular consequence (WCG first vs second place), then wouldn't I be better off watching some game between 2 A-class players where the balance could swing back and forth and ultimately result in a more enjoyable view?

True, but Stork vs Bisu finals weren't one-sided at all.

As far as that goes, there are two games in the last few months which strongly buck the trend - Stork vs Flash on Heartbreak Ridge in the OSL, and Stork vs Jaedong on Colosseum in the WCG Grand Finals. I think games between top players are ultimately worth watching, because when a game like one of those DOES happen, the satisfaction is completely worth it.

I don't see many ways watching lower class play can be an enjoyment. The only thing that comes to mind is humor, because you have to admit watching some noobs bash it out can be kinda funny from time to time.

Other than that though... I want to see great players play even greater. I get erections watching amazing play from two players fighting for that win. And I absolutely LOVE seeing the emotional side of the players during a series. Sometimes you can just see the desire for victory in their eyes.

Although I will agree some series aren't always the most enjoyable. I was disgusted by the recent Flash vs Kwanro bo5 series.

However, watching two "S" class players (in this case Flash vs Jaedong) butt heads will be nothing but an exciting ride for me. I'll be on the edge of my seat start to finish.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I don't really agree. I am super pumped for JD vs Flash. and Imo the only reason that many s-class games are kinda disappointing is because of the small sample of games compared to the rest of the pro games. if the s-class players met more often in leagues, then there would be a lot more classic series to look back on.

Stork vs Flash in PL wasn't one sided.

I agree with your first statement. That if one player slips up they have little chance of coming back, but if said two s class players were in top form they wouldn't make mistakes and you'd have one hell of a series. Especially a final were they practice solely for it all week

bisu vs stork is a pretty bad example but I see where you're going.
That's how sc is, when you're that good, it becomes a safe macrofest that ends up in a huge battles that lead to one guy winning conclusively or some kind of cheese to avoid that kind of unpredictable game.

i'd hardly call Jaedongs style a macrofest. He strives off aggressive play with impeccable micro to make it work. Also when Bisu was owning pvz he used multitasking and speed to throw the zerg off and smash their economy

No he doesn't...

While I wouldn't call his play a macrofest Jaedong is not exactly known for how aggressive he is. He has amazing micro yes but that doesn't automatically translate to having an aggressive playstyle.

After reading this comment I realised I hadn't seen that Stork/Jaedong game. Went back and watched it and found it absolutely excellent. Just wanted to say thanks

ZvT isn't like that; at least not the the same extent of ZvP. FlaSh vs Stork was one sided? I remember watching a epic slug fest, especially that game on Katrina

of course there are going to be games and series between s class players where it isnt one sided. What hes trying to say is when s class players meet you would think that since each player's skill level is close that the games would be really close, but instead both players prepare so hard that its either a bo loss or they play at such a high level that even one small mistake can end the game. I remember someone said that about everytime flash and jaedong meet besides one or two games it has been a one sided rape.

Isn't jaedong master of the 9pool? He plays aggressive, maybe not kwanro or shine aggressive too early on, but he has a lot of good harass and then transitions into very aggressive play once he has his third going.

I think you're thinking more along the lines of savior; bit more defensive zerg with good micro :S
