Updating I ran the 3 programs in safemode Turning laptop on, logged in waited. and it turned off. Turned it back on log on screen came on, and after a min it went into sleep mode.
I had a few errors.
Computer runs fine in safemode (non networked)
So any ideas right now?
So My laptop just got out of warranty
I go to turn it on, boots up I log in and within 5 mins screen goes black and stays that way. I can then shut it and it goes into sleep mode (sometimes) and then reopen it and re-log in but it still goes black. I think my laptop is overheating, but going from room temp, and 5 mins latter over heating?
So I've then pulled the plug and battery, rebooted and i get "shut down error" and i can boot in safe mode ect ect.
I can boot safe mode, but i guess i've not left it on long enough to see if the screen goes black.
So yeah, im kinda puzzled.
thanks for any trouble shooting tips or solutions
Guess this info would help IBM T-61 lenovo thinkpad
vista 32 home prem
duel core
recently replaced fan
trouble shooting with external monitor now

Easy fix just change your screen saver from black into something else
+ Show Spoiler +Seriously though Is it warm? how much battery % left when it goes black?
|
|
If you have access to an external monitor, see if the screen goes black on the external - that will tell you whether it's the LCD or something else
|
yeah good call Dullahan. if it's screws with you using external monitor then:
My problem hasn't come back since I did a major tune-up on my computer (virus, trojan and spyware scans, registry repairs, defrags, disk clean up) a week ago. Assuming that this is what helped fix the problem, my problem probably was a software, rather than a hardware, problem. I'll wait another two weeks before I can say that with more certaintly. But based on my experience, I'd strongly recommend a major check-up on your system before you decide to take the computer apart. Get back to us to tell us what happened.

its not a ss issue
uh no battery? i took it out and just have it plugged in while messing with it same problem
|
very doubtful since it is irregular, and i'd be ably to play with the screen to get video to pop back in and out.
|
Well if it fails on you using an external monitor it can be malware. Post hijackthis if external monitor fails aswell.
imma go to sleep
|
Nope still goes black and the external goes black as well
Uh my laptop forced itself into sleep mode O_o?
|
Some laptops force themselves to turn off once they reach a temperature too high to prevent further damage, that's usually caused by a stuffy laptop, but since you've recently bought a fan and I assume it's all cleaned out.. it's most likely a connection problem/malware. Malware is known to do that.. if you said you can boot it into safe mode have a try at scanning
|
thanks, what scan should i use?
can i get a link to it?
thanks guys

I know this may sound silly, but I had a problem with my laptop where it would just power off in the middle of a game (WoW), and just overheat really badly. In the end, I resolved it by opening it up and clearing out the dust-- no more overheating, no more random shutdowns. It's worth a shot! =)

I've helped a few guys with malware before using these steps: They are all applications and they all have freeware versions. The first one require no installation and therefore it can remove very nasty variants that block out installers.
1. http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/ download that and run it.
Now installs should work so lets try this one
2. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
3.http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Computer should be somewhat clean now. Manually scan all important files and back them up. If the infection was severe I would start preparing for a reformat because you never know.

Maybe your power schemes got bugged somehow and your computer goes to sleep after one minute of inactivity. Check those. You have that battery gauge on the taskbar, right? You can click on it to get to the power schemes.
Make another account, abandon current one.

well waiting atm but
Occam's Razor ><

What battery? I was talking about software shyte you know...
Have you somehow messed up the firmware/*bloatware*?
Like I said make new windows account and see if that one works better.
You may have to try to restore factory contents as a last resort and if the restore does not fix it it is most likely hardware that got damaged... or you can try to check the cooling hypothesis before i dunno... opening and cleaning the laptop takes a shorter time to do.
Do the things I said and report back. I am just trying to help.
