Temptations to go back to wow, I know I shouldn't.

Tell me why I shouldn't play wow. If I did play wow it would be just pvp, I was always a hardcore arena kid, but I still managed to get addicted to the game to the point where I decided to quit and get my social life back (the other contributing factors were shitty balance and intolerance of retards in the wow world). The other day I found out that mages got massive buffs last patch and are overpowered and amazing (I used to play a mage). I'm having trouble convincing myself not to start playing again, but I know I probably shouldn't. Tell me why you think I shouldn't play wow again, just so I can get these temptations gone.

I'm not sure if I want to play or not, and I just wanted people to share their opinions of wow to give me some more input. I'm honestly leaning away from playing again the more I think about it, but damn it is tempting.

Pros:

Fun
Something to do
I enjoy pwning noobs in arena and world pvp. Wow can be utterly satisfying when you take down a group of people by yourself in world pvp or when you reach the top of your battlegroup in arena ranking.

Cons:
15$/month
PvP balance fluctuates dramatically every patch.
The game is filled with retards
The game is addicting, and as a result can have a negative effect on my social life.
The game fucks up your sleep cycles if you aren't careful. Whereas SC you can't even play decently if you are tired at all.
I don't really have a massive amount of time to play.
I have a SC2 beta key, so wow will compete with that (if it ever starts).
I would have to transfer servers and find good teammates for arena.

Hmm.... it seems as if there are more cons. Venting about this helped. I don't think I am going to go back.

lol. Only retards play paladins. Yeah though, its true, I have let relationships fall to shit because wow was more fun then going out with them. Doesn't say much for said girls, but hey, I'm one of those people who loses interest quickly.

What's your average day like?

Ask yourself a few questions.
1) Do I have around 2-4 hours of spare time each day?
2) Would I enjoy spending that 2-4 hours playing WoW rather than another hobby?
3) Would spending more time on the computer impact other areas of my life? (School, work, social life, your personality)

Wow really isn't as devilish as people make it out to be. Your hobby is no more or less important than other peoples hobbies. If you enjoy WoW then so be it, have a great time playing. You just have to make sure you don't let your hobby turn into a obsession.

If you can honestly see yourself staying productive in school, work, health, and social life while relaxing for a few hours each day on WoW then there's nothing wrong with that.

About the girlfriend thing hahaha:

When I quit, I really didn't see much of a difference in my social life. I'm definitely not retarded with girls, In fact I can get dates fairly easily, my problem is that I don't meet enough people that I actually find interesting. The large majority of my friends think that a fun night out is going to a bar or club, getting drunk, and picking up girls. Personally I have never met a girl in a bar who I actually found interesting beyond the prospect of getting my dick wet. The more time I spend in bars the more I become a jaded misogynist. I don't enjoy bars or clubs, and it seems like the 18-24 crowd is only interested in getting sloshed. It seems like I spend a lot of time staying in just because I don't find what I usually do when I go out overly fun. I know I should look for girls in places other than the bars, such as the gym, or university clubs etc., but damn, it seems like all of the single girls are drunk and in the bars.

Fixed. Tankadins are awesome, and kinda OP. :p

I recently started playing again by rolling a new character on a new server, and playing around with levelling. Much easier to limit the amount of time spent on the game that way. If PvP is your main interest that might not work as well, though.

Don't play. I used to be in your position where I constantly thought about going back after quitting for X amount of time. These are the reasons that have kept me away for the game for god knows how long.
1. I wasn't having fun anymore. The main reason was playing was to get gear and "pimp out" my toon. Which leads me to my next point.
2. No more do I play games that involves spending RL time to get virtual items, especially games that never end. With Starcraft, I feel like I'm actually getting something out of it. My guitar playing has gotten a lot better because my hand speed has increased and my pinky strength has improved 10x fold.
3. The game is retarded-ly simple. If you have the right gear, getting glad titles are like taking candy from a baby. Blizzard has dumbed the game down so much that it can be played by any demographic. Senior citizens play the game now because it's that simple.
4. In a moment, your favorite class can go from the bees-knees to herpes with a simple patch. It's impossible for them to balance the game. They've been trying for like 5 years and they haven't gotten any better at it. Balance in WoW doesn't exist and it never will.
5. Don't be a WoW-fanboy. You saw those people at blizzcon, be a real man, stick with SC
I don't have mono anymore. Woooo!

WoW hasn't changed much since then. Ret Pallies are now Locks, and DKs are now warriors, 2v2 is useless, Protholy is retardedly OP in 2v2, 3v3 is pretty much PMR or go home, and 5v5 is a ridiculous 100k+ damage in a single global comp.

Unless you're a Wrath PvP'er (No offense) don't come back. The days of BC are gone. I haven't *Played* in a while but my account is active till the end of the year so i still get on occassionally and get the lowdown to what's going on.

1) Yeah, I don't think I have 2-4 hours of spare time each day unless I give up some other hobbies. Maybe 1-2 hours.
2) I might have more fun playing wow, but its debatable.
3) It might impact school if my workload increases, but I haven't even played games in 3 weeks, so I don't think it would become a problem.

WoW is a boring repetitive grind that isn't hard at all. Even Arena roll teams just rape the vast majority of other teams and put BGs on farm status for honor. End game raiding gets real old after awhile and I didn't even play after BC. Same shit only different graphics and bigger numbers.

With WoW you really don't need to put in that much time.. I play very little like a 2-4 hours a week max and I have fun with the game still. Although I don't raid anymore nor do arenas :D I want to do the new Ony encounter tho and I want to get the horsemans mount in hallows end.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I thought until I saw the mage buffs and the recent SK top 100 rankings. Mages are raping the top end of the field. Mage/priest is easily the best 2's comp these days. Again though, this just shows how bad blizzard is at balancing their game, and next month it might be different.

WoW rewards you for sheer time spent playing. It's hard to play an hour or two of WoW every day and get similar enjoyment compared to any other recreational activity. Play sc, masturbate, read a book, do whatever and you'll still have time left over and have had more satisfaction per hour. WoW is only good as a time sponge when you don't know what to do with yourself and have low uni hours or a pension.

You're just hanging with the wrong age group/social class. There's plenty of 18-24 year olds who are intelligent, dedicated, and driven to succeed in life, you just won't ever find them in bars or playing wow. Try some hobbies like volunteering at hospitals, or coaching a kids sports team, or mentoring troubled youth (if you live near a city I'm sure there are big brother type programs) or something.

Be careful, though. Just beacuse StarCraft is not an MMO does not mean you cannot get addicted to it. Infact, the general "you can only improve by massing games" mentality that exists in the SC community has already caused some to play the game too much and thus cause their other life aspects to suffer. It is the "14-year old kid that sleeps in school, plays StarCraft for 10 hours every day and never gets beyond C rank" syndrome, as Day[9] would put it.

That said, though, gaming addiction is usually the symptom of something much deeper and more problematic (since unlike chemical drugs, there is nothing but your own mentality forcing you to play games excessively). So I would recommend dealing with any issues that you might have in life before regularly playing any game, MMO or not.

hey generalizations are fun
i enjoying clubbing/barhopping etc on my free nights
before that, i had hobbies similar to the ones you listed
and before that i used to play starcraft/wow/lineage2/a billion other games

people's interests change.. do whatever is fun, that should be pretty much the only criteria for spending your time

Nicely put.

I too hate games that are not competitive, and no, fighting PvP after 3 months of farming is not competitive. I tried WoW for a month or two on a pirate server, and its ok - if you are like 15 year old high school kiddo. And you are diving into the sea of imagination, and created worlds as Tolkiens, WoW. If you are above 20 don't go for it. There are really other things in your life, waiting to be conquered by you.

While I agree with what you say, I've been in 6 raiding guilds (Key here is Raiding) and in every single one, 90% of the players were older than I was. I would say the average age in each of those guilds was probably about 23, maybe 24. You'd be surprised to hear that *most* raiding guilds see 15-20 year olds as "high school kiddies" and nothing more. That is to say, they don't want them.

Trust me mate, you don't want to compare to those 23/24 dudes. MOST (with few exceptions that know the art of balance) of them are:

a) low-lifes with no education and barely endure their WoW fees. They will end up just as guys_that_played_random_game. I know/have met many of these guys.
b) parent-leechers, who have vast family treasure and have the commodity of growing up in their 30's.

Oh i'm not saying that said people were 'good' or 'happy' people, i'm just pointing out that while many people make the sweeping generalization that WoW players are 15-20 highschoolers, when it's not necessarily the case.

I never said that 15 year kids consist the majority of WoW. I just said that he should go for it only if hes 15, cause i see it useful and worthwhile in that age. It makes your mind take the untraditional way while you are forming up as a person. IMO.

I hate to disagree, but I know a few 15 year olds that are perverted freaks because they're addicted to WoW, don't want to go anywhere in life, are obsessed with porn, and have absolutely no communication skills.

I guess we agree to disagree here

There are always exceptions. But do know that is perfectly normal to be 15 and freak, and porn addicted, and to not hang in the streets/bars. And have no communication skills for that matter. Thats what 15 years of age is all about...and dreaming that you are some really evil warlock that the world will fear and bow to... someday.

lol. Only retards play paladins. Yeah though, its true, I have let relationships fall to shit because wow was more fun then going out with them. Doesn't say much for said girls, but hey, I'm one of those people who loses interest quickly.

Lol.
We have multiple brackets generated in advance. Relax . (Kennigit) I just simply do not understand how it can be the time to play can be 22nd at 9:30 pm PST / midnight the 23rd at the same time. (GGzerg)

Why "lol" about something so common? I know many people that have ended their relationships due to WoW/DotA.

You have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

Hello generalizations.

I played WoW fairly hardcore until Wrath came out. I'm talking top 10-50 World rankings here with raiding guilds. Because of the logistics of vanilla WoW/TBC most 15 year olds wouldn't be able to lead a group of 25-40 people through a complex encounter such as 4hm and come out on top. That really doesn't happen. As such the GM of a guild is generally like some 25 year old and 25 year olds don't want a bunch of 16 year olds around them... so they recruit other older people.

The VAST majority of high end guilds are full of intelligent, hard working, and independent people. They have the balance required to play a game, raise their kids, work, and live comfortably because they viewed WoW as the HOBBY it should be viewed as. Every single high end guild I was in fit this to a T. Immature brats were quickly thrown out because they don't listen and they are annoying to listen to on vent. In fact the GM of the guild I was in before I quit had a Masters in business and was pulling in nearly 6 figures a year. Every officer was like that, either going to university full time or working a full time job. Almost every single regular member was like that too.

WoW doesn't suck the life out of people, the players just suck at managing time properly. I honestly never understood where the "You have no life if you raided in early WoW" line even came from. Everything i've experienced points the opposite way.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I no longer feel tempted to play wow. Ballercraft is so much better anyways.

I wouldn't say that I was addicted in the sense that you are portraying. I spent a couple nights a week raiding and would play 1 or 2 hours of pvp every day. Played more during the summer during my days off, but that is what I considered addicted. The main reason I felt I played too much is that I did both pvp and raiding before, eating up a 4-6 hour block a few nights a week seems to take up alot of time for me. Combine that with university and you have a very busy life. I really don't have problems with other games simply because when its an individual game you don't have to make commitments, you can play a couple rounds of TF2 or a couple games of SC and put it down. You cannot however raid for a couple hours and then ditch, or play arena whenever you want. Wow required making commitments to other players, and I find that is when I get carried away, when I feel that my team or my guild won't do well if I don't spend all my spare time playing with them. There were times in highschool that I played way too much for that reason.

Yes though, you are right, MMO or not you can be addicted. I just find it MUCH easier to manage time spent on games that don't require committing huge chunks of time.

Wait a second, did you just went on persuading me that the most of WoW gamers are NOT 15 year old (which i never claimed to be), or that there are very smart and neat persons @ WoW (which i added in exceptions, although i am pretty sure the overall ratio is greatly over into lowlifes), or that 15 year kid WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY A VIDEO GAME? Why am i even discussing this.

Over and out.

You're just hanging with the wrong age group/social class. There's plenty of 18-24 year olds who are intelligent, dedicated, and driven to succeed in life, you just won't ever find them in bars or playing wow. Try some hobbies like volunteering at hospitals, or coaching a kids sports team, or mentoring troubled youth (if you live near a city I'm sure there are big brother type programs) or something.

hey generalizations are fun
i enjoying clubbing/barhopping etc on my free nights
before that, i had hobbies similar to the ones you listed
and before that i used to play starcraft/wow/lineage2/a billion other games

people's interests change.. do whatever is fun, that should be pretty much the only criteria for spending your time

Of course there are always exceptions, so I misspoke when I said "won't ever find them in bars or playing wow." What I was getting at is that the large majority of people in those environments aren't exactly go-getters with the rest of their life. Even those WoW raiders who are successful businessmen or doctors or whatever, wow is usually their only hobby.

if you're going to play WoW at least wait until a bit after Cataclysm comes out, really.

At this point anything you accomplish will be somewhat useless (even moreso since you'll have left the game to come back and do barely anything constructive)

like others said, WoW is only good if you really have too much time on your hands t_t 1 year+ clean and sometimes I think about it, but after I do I'm really glad I quit and never reactivated

SK top 100 says otherwise. MP rapes 2's bracket, RMP is still destroying in 3's, as well as WMS burst comps. If you don't think mages are OP now with 20% ms and damage buffs then something is wrong with you. Not to mention mage gear spellpower has gone up nearly 30% in season 6.

20% ms is so important rmp when rogues are giving it for you already and it doesn't stack right?

Mage gear spellpower has gone up and so has every other stat for every other class....

There were no buffs to mages, RMP has always been a powerful comp.

As for 2s, there's 15 mage teams in the top 100. There are 29 paladin teams in the top 100.

Mages are not overpowered right now, you heard wrong.

Ok fine they aren't OP. They are about where they should be (just under 10% representation in all arena brackets). It's just so different than season 5 where there were 3 mage teams in the top 100 in 2's. The MS still is amazing, yeah its redundant with wound poison, but before I quit I played MWS, and 20% ms in that comp is just plain amazing. The increase in spell power for caster classes is significantly larger proportionally when compared with melee classes. They are getting more armor pen, but hey my toon is a mage, I have shit for armor anyways.

They seem amazing now, but I guess you are right, paladins are still broken. What else is new.

So basically when a game has shitty balance it makes you not want to play it, unless it's in favour of the class you are using, then it's great.

You say no one would play sc if it wasn't balanced, and you want a balanced game. WoW is not balanced, therefore you should not play it.

I have no clue why you need other people to give you reasons why you shouldn't do something when clearly you know that your life will be better without it. Either you like it so much that you are willing to give up things like your social life as you said, or you decide that you want to live a better life without it. You said yourself that you have an addiction to it, this is like a former alcoholic asking for reasons why he shouldn't go back to drinking.
