In any case, our solution was to reinstall windows, which worked perfectly. Maybe someone has a better idea of what the problem is than me though. | ||

Svchost is in everyones process list you just have to show processes from all users. Also that cpu usage is definately not normal, the process was somehow infected with spyware or a virus. I would run malware bytes and spybot in safe mode to start. Then if its still bad run a virus scan. | ||

It's basically taskmanager with more options, it should help you find out exactly what your cpu is doing. Run some antivirus/antispyware too. | ||

![[image loading]](http://i26.tinypic.com/iviuxl.png) and just as rule of thumb, any process that has 'side', 'search', 'help', or sound/video card related can be turned off. edit- also keep in mind that virus and malware can replace pretty much anything so possibly any one of these process can be bad (even if it seems to be essential). That's why it helps a lot when you have less shit running on your comp all the time. Not only for the speed up, but so when something happens you can tell when something is new or out of place if you check ur task man every once in a while. I've been virus and malware free for a long time and I don't really ever use any anti vir or anti spyware. (just firefox with no script). I pretty much check my taskman every day, check my msconfig every week or so, and run hijackthis every so often to see if any new shit is picked up. | ||

This largely depends on the computer you are running it on, what Vista utilities you use, etc. Also, the amount of processes does not mean anything in terms of CPU usage, on any system - it only depends on how much each of those processes takes up and what resource allocation system you have. | ||
