It's been a while I'm working on Mac because people in my company are retarded and think Mac is the best. For me, the biggest difference I can feel between Mac and PC is Mac is more expensive.
Until I started to play SC.
First, I was very happy to see that Blizzard has actually released a Mac version of the best game in the world and mac users can play with PC users. Cool.
But. That's all.
The Keyboard is a pain in the A since the freaking FN is taking the place of the CTRL so I can't save group. I bought a Dell Generic Black KeyBoard. I also fought a hell against this freaking mouse : WHY THE HELL I HAVE TO USE MULTITOUCH to RIGHT CLICK ? And the optic is SO DAMN BAD. So, thanks Sk' (who is in Japan too), he gave me a MX518.
But... I'm still screwed. Because on mac, you can't take the mouse acceleration off and every actions seem to be, well, impossible in a RTS. Two solutions : don't play (1) // buy a software that override the usb (2).
Because neither of these solutions are good for me, I found the 3rd solution which is to get a Microsoft mouse driver that actually kills the F mac acceleration. YEAH MICROSOFT POWAH !
Now, I'm ready to play. NO. Because if I've actually found a way to get the ICCup working through mac, I don't have any other plugins, especially the Lan Latency and the Anti Hack. So in many games i've joined, I've been automatically dropped after the first second or my SC/BW literally crashes when i get into a game.
So each time I wanna play someone, I have to make sure he doesn't have anti-hack and Lan Latency plugins running on. But without the last plugins, many friends of mine and especially some people I've met on TLnet couldn't play me... because the lag is too high !
CAN'T BELIEVE THAT ! I'm in Tokyo, running on a 2000 USD computer with Optical Fiber Internet Connection and I CAN'T PLAY CORRECTLY A GAME THAT WAS RELEASED 10 YEARS AGO ?
So I guess the last thing I have to do is to wine and switch back to Windows. But why paying so much to get a Mac if it is to switch back to Windows ?
the thing is that iccup python will always crash your mac, along with Medusa. maps like Destination and Colosseum are fine to play though. oh and it's not lan lat or AH that is causing you to drop. if you're in the lobby you're probably being banned :p

Or Parallels to run XP OS, but that costs around $75, however you don't have to reboot your computer every time you want to switch OS. Thats what I use when I play SC, it took awhile to get the settings right, but now it works fine.

Yo chill out and check out a solution to one of your problems!
You can turn off mouse accleration from the terminal. Google it.
You can also command click (the apple button) do right click.
the function key only really interferes with binding and recalling map locations. Just hit the spacebar a lot. Your bound to end up in the right place eventually.
Ya everyone knows Macs absolutely suck dick for gaming.
Anyone that buys a mac for GAMING is wasting their money(I won't even go into how much the macs price is to make up for all the vista bashing advertising they do..not defending vista..just saying). I'm guessing your company didn't intend to use their macs for gaming They probably just didn't want to deal with viruses that no one bothers making for macs(but if they did..mac would be just as vunerable).
Also, native windowed mode on all blizzard games? that's pretty cool. Its handled by OSX so there is very little fucking up of the image like there would be on windows.

tbh i have no clue what you want to say with that post o_O
I use a mac. The thing is, I have no problem with it. You know why? First, I got used to the Fn thing. It was gay, but I got used to it, and it isn't a problem Second, which is key, I DON'T USE OS X TO PLAY GAMES. Partition, then boot up a copy of XP or Win7. Set the Fx keys so they aren't the presets (i.e. volume, brightness. To get these, you press Fn) so you can save locations in SC. Third, BUY A MOUSE. Even if you were using a PC laptop, you wouldn't play using a trackpad, despite it being easier than "multi touch."
It's really all a matter of preference. But if you have a Mac, do what you can, and it is usually enough. As for transitioning to regular keyboards/computers. Maybe the first game you'll have a bit of an issue, but you adjust and get used to it. Not a problem at all.
EDIT: Just read xflaws. I've been a mac user for a long time, but I agree with pretty much all of those statements, haha. That's why I use both.
I'm not on a mac but my Fn key is bugging the hell out of me. I got a keyboard for it but it's not very portable. :l I just wish they made the Fn key switchable in the bios or something, jesus.

ahah
no, seriously, the question is : if mac is such a damn good OS, why do I have to dual boot ? Everyone's puking on Windows but I can do everything on it... without dual booting on Mac OS. So basically, if you have a Mac, you still have to buy Windows. AHAH.
Hahahaha... If you think about it from an extremely biased XP view... You could argue all this ad is saying is that you buy a mac to own a PC (Win7, probably) and then some (OS X).
EDIT: Statement for Mac fanatics (though I doubt there are very many here). I am sick of mac-fags. By me saying mac-fags, I mean people who live their life against Windows, sleep with their mac, and warm their house with FireWire. Yes, I use a mac, but no, I am not a mac-fag. I personally use both operating systems, not only so I understand how to use both, instead of living a narrow minded life (technologically), but I think that Windows has it's pros and its cons, as well as OS X. Neither of them are perfect, neither are worthy of doing everything. So when people say that other OSes suck just because they like the one that they use, it just irritates the hell out of me. OS X has created some of the most obnoxious fans, and I am just thankful most people use PC. Not because of the OS, mind you. Just because the PC users tend to be less obnoxious. No one goes around saying, "Hey look at me! I'm using Windows 7. Aren't I cool? It works better than your computer because it's cooler! I'm not going to back this up with any significant proof, but I know why I'm better, and haha you suck!"
Okay.. /rant.
EDIT2: SC on a Mac is nice for the purposes of native windowed mode, and it seems to resize the resolution better (on some screens). But, it's really only good to watch replays, or do some micro maps. Lack of iCCup Launcher or ChaosLauncher, or really any other 3rd party software added to SC makes it relatively useless.
Before I begin, I appologize for any harsh/personal comments:
You know, I am glad atleast you have an opinion based on experience. Its great, because most PC users just say "Macs sux" and thats it.
However, do not call people retarded because they have a preference for something. I can tell you many Windows users stuck up about their OS as well. They dont mind having gigs of anti virus software that is a must for windows, as you can not even go on Teamliquid without getting a virus, and trial software that no one uses.
Yes I agree, Macs are not that great for gaming, but for the record, games are designed on a mac, and because 85% of the world is using Windows because of controversial issues in the 80's and 90's, they have to import their graphics and re code it all on Windows. That should speak for itself.
That 1 click mouse is not meant for gaming. If I was blessed enough to have an iMac, I would switch it to a Razor or what not when I am playing. However, I have found using that 1 click mouse to be far easier to control for programs such as Photoshop.
Just because you hate it doesnt mean someone else does to.
In my junior year they bought an entire computer lab full of macs - what a mistake. They were so slow that they couldn't run Word and Firefox at the same time, and they would often hard freeze - to the point where you would have to rip the power chord out of the wall just to get them to turn off so they could restart and boot up for 20 minutes. The next year they were replaced with PC's that had 5x the specs and only cost 1/4 the amount.

are you on crack? fine, your first piece of advice might be sound, but im sure he would love to have to hold an extra button down every time he wants to right click instead of just using a different finger. also, im sure taking your advice to jam the spacebar hoping it will do the job sometimes will get him straight to A+.

LOL Can you give me the source for that statement? It makes no sense to create a game outside of its native environment, and if you look at the guided tours through development studios you can pretty clearly see that they are using PC's. Honestly i think you just pulled that out of your ass because very few professional game companies that i can think of would use Mac's to develop their software.

uhhhh...no. games are made on windows mostly. :| where'd you even get that piece of information from.
OS X is an amazing operation system and I love using my MacBook Pro for a lot of things (coding/photoshopping/all that kind of stuff), but I won't use it to play games. You can just feel on the desktop it doesn't have the kind of mouse input you need to play games like StarCraft/Quake. It's annoying, but it's true.
You can disable mouse accel (I've gotten rid of it via USB Overdrive or something like that), but the mouse input is still pretty horrid, so it's much better to just bootcamp XP or Windows 7 if you want to do any gaming.

Rest assured that Macs would have just the same problems with viruses that Windows has if Mac was the most common OS. The most important protection Mac has is that nobody cares to code malware for a few percent of the computers when he could just as well cover like 90%. Mac might be safer to some extent, but "safer" does not imply "safe".
First of all, dont rate my opinions without any content. Atleast I am explaining myself.
Also, these facts that I am "pulling out my ass" are from texts and from people who teach how to use art programs (such as photoshop). Yes, these things all of biases, but then again what doesnt. And maybe what I am saying my not be all correct. However, atleast I am explaining myself instead going "0/10" or "ur just jealous cuz BLAH BLAHB BLAH." For the record I am not jealous, as I personally dont care, as I am broad minded enough to be able to use Linux/OS X/Windows at the same time.
And btw you dont see everything developers do. If you are a dev that has worked on a good, popular game in the art department, please correct me if I am wrong.
I personally do think OS X can be greatly improved. For starters, I still dont like how awkward it is to change file names, and windows makes is easier. Then again, using photoshop on windows is awkward and does not look good IMO.
This thread will turn into a pointless war about how either mac fags (the ones that bitch about how OS X and steve jobs are gods) or windows retards (dont base their opinions on anything) are better.

You don't need gigs of anti virus software. Thats just bullshit propoganda. If you're not retarded you can keep any computer reasonably clean. As more people use macs more hackers will target them and retarded mac users will need some anti virus software. Oh wait, Snow Leopard has built in AV software now so this point is moot.
Trial software is a somewhat more valid point. Obviously if you build your own computer you don't have to deal with it because its not something inherent in Windows. Depending on which manufacturer you buy from you will have differing levels of shit you have to uninstall but thats okay because I am fine with spending 30m-1hr uninstalling stuff if I'm saving an assload of cash.

There are people who use Macs and can justify the extra cost and then there are those who are like you, woefully misinformed and blinded by fanboyism.

Mac"Fags" are people who blather on about how superior their operating system is with no factual support (as in "hurf durf no viruses" etc.), however PC"Fags" are enraged by the stupid Mac"Fags" who do this, so they come down out of their superior operating system to lay waste to the stupidity which will be clung to by the Mac"Fags" anyway.
For example: I'll configure a Mac Pro off of the Apple website, and then configure a PC with the same specifications
Mac Pro: 2.66ghz Xeon Quad Core 3x2GB DDR3 1066 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive (16mb Cache) ATI Radeon 4870 512mb 18x Superdrive
This is just ONE demonstration that shows the incredible mark-up on mac machines - and not only that, but the Xeon Quad-Core is a TERRIBLE product for desktop peformance, its a server core for a reason. An i7 920 would be $700 cheaper and perform much, much better for the average user! That means you could SURPASS the performance of that shitty, overpriced mac for only around $900.

I hate how it crashed practically every day, just had to reboot it since they had no real equivalent to the task manager. My PC never crashes so badly that you have to reboot it.
After using a mac for about 3 years I switched to PC and was so much happier. Macs are ridiculous wastes of money. Why not just use linux instead of using a mac, it's just a dumbed down version of linux anyway. Just give a mac to your grandmother, I sure she would enjoy the simplicity and ease of use. And using her whole hand to click the mouse, too!

No one goes around saying, "Hey look at me! I'm using Windows 7. Aren't I cool? It works better than your computer because it's cooler! I'm not going to back this up with any significant proof, but I know why I'm better, and haha you suck!"
what about pc fags, who seize any opportunity to bash macs, like in this thread? macs and pcs have their pros and cons, let people have their preferences please.
You know, for people who actually know how to mod their windows and desktops and whatnot, macs aren't even an option.
Older ppl I find use macs cause they're much easier to understand and require way less effort to learn. For the younger ppl, most of the time they just think macs are cooler/look better and they simply must get one.
To me, macs have always been some nicely set up computers with some cute software made so that users can enjoy an easy computer experience right off the bat.
However, ppl willing to put some effort and time into their windows can easily make windows look 5x better and run 5x better than any mac OS.
Functionality, capability and flexibility-wise, windows/pcs are wayyy better than macs. The thing is, you have to find that potential yourself. I prefer pcs/windows not because of what they are, but because of what I can accomplish with a PC as opposed to a mac.

That ad makes me angry. If you keep your windows and browser updated, don't go to shady websites, and aren't retarded enough to fall for phishing attacks or run a 20kb exe file pretending to be a song that you downloaded off limewire, the likelihood of getting a virus or being attacked by a worm is so low. You don't even really need an antivirus. If more people start getting macs they will realize that hackers don't target macs because nobody uses them.

Now, for your problems, just google for it.
Why people are retarded in my company ? Because it would cost 2x less if they went for a PC so save money and stop whining about the crisis.
Why Mac here ? -I don't use photoshop, I use gimp cuz I can do everything I want on it since my job isn't design or things like that and Gimp is free -I still use Office and since the clients (Japanese) all have Microsoft Windows, when I send them a powerpoint made under mac, they usually got the "spacing" problem -Mac is freaking incompatible with everything and what the point having dual boot when I can just have Windows and it's ok ? -Mac is absolutely beautiful and I love the OLED screen but guess what, it's still a computer and I don't wank watching it. -For security reasons ? LOLLOLOLOL. If you really care about that, use open BSD and it's still free. -Why would I buy a Dell Keyboard or a PC mouse when I got a Mac Wireless KB and mouse... ah, yeah, because of the fn and the click issues... so, once again, I use something from PC on a Mac.
So after listing all these reasons I can say : Mac doesn't do better than a PC and actually does less but costs more. So, people are retarded. Still don't agree ? Don't read this blog and go back to your Mac church singing how Mac is the best OS ever with all these Mac fanboys from this Mac communi.... uh, mac cult.

Macs are for one purpose: Adobe software. PCs are for multiple purposes: Adobe software + everything else.
You can get a PC for under 1k that runs just as fast, if not faster, than the latest 1.5k iMac. I don't see how Photoshop looks awkward on windows, and even if it does, you can change the explorer format to look exactly like a mac - because windows can actually do stuff.

This is so true. I got rid of my AV 6 months ago because it was pissing me off and I have had zero problems since then. If you are intelligent and willing to learn get a PC. If you are an idiot who cant figure things out for himself get a Mac.

And how does a 1 click mouse make it "far" easier to control programs such as photoshop exactly?
my opinion it does. like I said, its about preference.
Ok understood. But even opinions and preferences have REASONS behind them.
I just dont see how it would make much difference either way in a program like photoshop. Like how could that be relevant? Especially for someone who just stated that "windows retards" don't base their statements on anything.
ok here is my reason. I like using my entire hand to press the mouse. Also, i like how photoshop is on a Mac, as the tool bars are more seperate from the picture, instead of an ugly gray background behind it. I base this on my experience on using cs3 on both OS X and Windows. sorry if i wasnt clear.
wait... you like it that you can unwantingly minimize everything and go to the desktop if you misclicked by one pixel in photoshop? wow!!!

This is actually a pretty uninformed post. You're basically saying, "I can do these things in windows, I don't know how/if you can do them on a mac, therefore it's not possible". You are able to theme OSX, a simple google search would have revealed this. There are also tons of software for mac that simply don't have quality equivalents in windows, I made a post about this in the Linux, why you should try it thread when much the same discussion as we're having here was happening.
Having gone through the whole modding windows thing, I find it much, much easier to extend OSX to improve my workflow exactly as I want. Shell scripts (doable on windows but nowhere near as accessible to call) and applescript. And improving my workflow is probably the most important thing for me choosing an OS to spend most of my time on.

As long as you're not retarded and don't go looking for trouble, it's not hard to keep your computer reasonably clean. If you want to be extra careful, less than half a gig of anti-virus and other anti-mal/spyware programs will take care of everything for you.
If you buy your own copy of windows for a computer you built yourself, you don't get trial software.
What games are designed on macs?
I use photoshop a lot, and I don't see why having only one mouse button would make using photoshop easier. Please explain.

So you meant to say that the visuals in games are designed on a mac? That's fair to say, as a lot of media is done on mac, but still, not all.
The way you worded your prior post implied, however, that games were coded on macs. You should take extra care to be as clear as possible when covering yourself with oil and running through a fire.
Honestly, I never really had a problem with macs until Apple started up that big marketing campaign that created the whole trendy Mac/Apple i-Whatever thing. It wasn't until people got annoying about their macs that I started disliking macs.
I'm not a hater of Apple...I think iPhones are fun, and I love and use iPods...but the overpriced and limited (for my purposes) Macs are, in my opinion, a dumb buy.
I know there's some Mac specific software that is used a lot in the film industry, but I've never heard anyone say so strongly that Adobe programs run better on Macs before this thread. I know some and know of many more professional illustrators and graphic designers that use windows... ... ...
Most of all, though, I hate how it's cool, hip, trendy and indie to own a Mac. That's me being vain, but still...it's annoying.

ehh, thats not exactly what my point was
what i was trying to impress was that even though windows may first come as something that looks and works less smoothly than a mac, if you put some effort into it, you can get even better aesthetics than you would with OSX or whatever other apple OS, while still retaining all the good features of windows/pcs (better game compatibility, lower prices and whatnot). i guess i should have more directly stressed this point instead of just saying that younger ppl find macs more appealing due to macs being "cooler"/more aesthetically pleasing, or that older ppl like the lessened hassel (i'm being general here and not stereotyping).
i'll admit i do personally dislike macs, but i try to keep any deeply biased statements out of my posts. you're also right in saying that i'm relatively uninformed about macs in general, and you're right in thinking that I know less than you regarding not only modding macs and linux, but windows as well (in fact i've never even touched a computer with linux before lol).
i simply based this post off of my general knowledge/experience that: -macs are more expensive than their pc counterparts -macs have compatibility issues with certain software and games -windows is less aesthetically pleasing and user friendly than macs -windows is moddable so that the aesthetic quality level of a mac (and beyond) can be attained for windows
when reading through my post again, i can see how i come off as ignorant because i don't consider the things you can do with a mac. however, because i personally must consider things like price and compatibility issues before aesthetics/workflow, you have to understand why I don't/cannot talk about modding macs' operating systems.
i think the problem was that i should have put "especially considering the price and compatability issues of macs, it's just not worth it" after all my points instead of being so absolute and general in my statements.
EDIT: on an unrelated note, you know what i'm finding? forums and non-instant communication in general are terrible methods to hold discussions with small numbers of people.

That means you could SURPASS the performance of that shitty, overpriced mac for only around $900.
i just did a bit of reading on this and you can cut the cost of that mac pretty drastically by buying a basic system and upgrading the components yourself. apple uses some very strange markups for anything beyond the base system, but you can fix that with minimal effort
yeah, apple wanted $400 for a memory upgrade that cost me $100 through newegg to do it myself. that practice is a bit off-putting, but they wouldn't price it that way if people weren't going to pay for it. i'm not sure what the mac pros pricing is all about, but i don't know anyone who owns one outside of high-end video editing labs.
also, why is it that only pc users seem to have such contempt and hatred for macs? seems like everyone i know who owns a mac enjoys the experience and doesn't regret paying however much of a markup they paid (on that topic: apple's pricing is designed in such a way that the best possible value for your purchase will be for the early adopters, as they are historically slow at upgrading specs/dropping prices, when i bought my macbook it was the same price as a similarly configured windows-based laptop, but that was nearly 2 years ago and it is now pretty badly overpriced).
why are people demonized and called various slurs for valuing things other than purely the price per part of their system? the truly zealous apple users might be annoying, but they are nowhere near as immature as the other side of the coin.
I like Apple for one thing, and one thing only: To give Microsoft a bit of competition. If it wasn't for apple, the OS world would be a virtual monopoly, and the price for Windows would prolly have been even larger.
At which Macs are better than Windows. Here's what I use Windows for:
- DAWs/Music software (Cubase) - Image editing software (Photoshop) - Office - Games (Starcraft, Diablo 2, Sacrifice, Starsiege: Tribes, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Quake III Arena, Dr. Drago's Madcap Chase, Age of Mythology, Call of Duty 4, Portal, Soldat, World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Oblivion, Morrowind, Mount&Blade, NetHack, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, IL-2 Sturmovik, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Gabriel Knight, my currently small "DOS Games" folders [287 items]) - Everything Else
So, Mac fanboys can keep their Macs. Hell, they can keep their "we're better than you" arguments. Macs are excellent computers for people who desire some specific Mac-exclusive or Mac-based software. That's it. Don't try to pawn it off as better than (operating system here) for any other reason, and certainly not because it's so much simpler and safer; that's not a selling point in my book. If I was in charge, people ordinarily too stupid to own a computer wouldn't have their own fucking operating system, and all you simians who would execute "LOOK AT THIS COOL SCREEN SAVER THAT ISN'T INFECTED BY A VIRUS.EXE", wonder why all your important documents disappeared, and complain that Windows is obviously really bad and unsafe, wouldn't be infecting my perfect world of logical thinkers. At least then I wouldn't have to endure shit like "I forgot my kids at the bus station again, but thank GOD I can boot up my Mac just fine."
Most importantly, here's what I would do on my Mac:
I don't get why people bash Macs for looking awesome. For a non-gamer, the only serious drawback to a Mac is the price, but some people really are willing to pay for aesthetics. It's not crazy to us -- we like our stuff to look good. PCs, more often than not, end up looking like cheap plastic toys compared to Macs.

Have you ever looked at any PCs from Falcon or Alienware? Those machines look great. You are also asking Starcraft players to agree that asthetics are really important. If we really cared about asthetics, we would play other newer games. I don't find asthetics that important, it's a bonus but other stuff is more important. I think the problem is most people use PCs and then it's really hard to change to mac. It's not as hard going the other way around, but I can't use a mac because I'm too used to PC
