..... I mean I wouldnt have been surprised with this result before the game but how we fell apart completely after 70 minutes was shocking. On the uspide, we werent lacking for ideas. Our decisionmaking when to shoot and when to pass has been abysmal, there were multiple sitters gone begging because somebody (iirc mostly Gündogan, sorry) apparently didnt see the wide open player (mostly Gnabry) a few metres away. Also out subs had zero impact. Why would you want to sub Musiala whos been terrrific? If he was tired I didnt notice.

This is the actual starting eleven of Japan on the field now and they have tons of good players I'm not sure what you mean. Though in all honesty I'm just reading the livereport and have no idea how the game really goes aside from that Argentina lost against a definitely weaker team and deserved the loss Germany is playing against a top team with a midfield full of really strong players who are borderline-world class Ahh I see. My comment was more on the stats of the game which showed the equalizing goal was the second shot on goal for Japan while Germany had like a gazillion shots with a bunch of sitters + 2 goals offside France lead 2 1 against Croatia at half time with only one shot on target

Its not just Germany falling apart - its Japan finally using their asset they actually have. We are a very strong football playing team as proven

Some here are just clueless on Asian football and only know Asian footballers through European club football.
Sheesh.
One thing I'll say about Japan is that they always seem to be involved in really fun, exciting games at World Cups.

might have been the gameplan all along, keep a tight close 1st half, and really go for it in the 2nd.

That only worked because Germany didnt want to score the 2nd goal after like 3 100% chances.. No I will stick that the eleven at the 1-1 and 2-1 should be the one that starts for Japan

ive already said that japan is a dark horse and could advance out of the group. i chose spain to be the chokers but turns out it might be germany instead.
with that said though, japan are not even close to being a "top team". top teams are favourites against pretty much everyone they play, and japan will never be favourites over european/south american powerhouses. and the players arent borderline world class either. absolutely no where near world class

Yes, they're a free-spirited and never-say-die bunch. Pity how they collapsed to Belgium last WC after leading 2-0.
And their fans are just amazing! Cleaning up trash after the match, such high energy whether win or lose. Hope they go far ithis year!

The stands for Spain vs Costa Rica are only half full, maybe less

Distance between stadiums is quite short. I wonder whether fans could watch back-to-back matches by taking the metro. Probably not possible without missing a few minutes of play. Still, I'm guessing some hard-core fans may have made a marathon itinerary.

Also Rodri playing as a centre back for Spain is a bit of a surprise. Has he ever played there before?

This is starting to look like a Spain v France final.
edit: And Penalty for Spain.

I'm really enjoying the underdog upsets so far. But there's really a developing pattern of top teams only hitting top gear in later games when the climate is cooler.

Ya this is fair. Japan beating Germany isn't shocking, because Japan is a decent team with a bunch of fairly good players. But it is an upset - because Germany is a better team, and even though japan won, today's game only confirmed that. Germany had more than twice Japan's shots/chances. This, that the worse team wins ever so often, is just part of why football is such a great sport, but it also means that no team can be defined by a singular result. If japan follows this up with playing an even game with spain and winning their ro16 match, we can talk about upgrading their 'team status', but they haven't shown enough for that yet.
The point that euros are ignorant of Asian football is totally fair though, but I think much more highlighted by Saudi Arabia than by Japan. I saw a Norwegian pundit had Saudis in 31st place of his power rank - that one was clearly flat out wrong. But a team being somewhere around 15-20 beating one that is around 5-8 isn't nearly as big of a surprise.

The Gavi-Pedri-Busquets trident is sublime. Spain's gameplay focused on slick passing rather than hard running is the kind of efficiency required to win a marathon tourney like the WC.

Saudi scored with their only two shots on target. The lopsided stats for both matches are quite comparable.
Both wins by Saudi and Japan are upsets. The stats don't lie. Repeat those games 10 times, and Argentina and Germany would win or at least draw 8-9 times.
The bigger upset is Argentina losing simply because they are a more solid top side over Germany in last 2-3 years. The footballing level of Saudi and Japan is pretty much even. That's the only point I was making about the ignorance.
But all in all, we are generally in agreement

Now 5-0 for Spain...
edit: Now 7...
