I always wanted Layrea to do well at Forest, but he never got a game unfortunately and went out on loan. Its a bit of a waste.

I don't think there's been a more complete humiliation than what spain just did. like even 7-1 brazil got A goal. Costa rica didn't even get a corner kick let alone anything resembling a shot off or recordable xg. Forget your predictions this barca midfield is terrifying. You can't cover Busquets but you must cover Busquets. Hes old as heck but he's got two young super stars that grew up idolizing him and under his wings for years now.

That game will be huge. Germany's WC kryptonite, Italy, is absent 2 straight WC, and yet this is how they take advantage of that? The Belgium - Canada game sort of reminded me of the Denmark - Peru game from 2018. Canada/Peru were very lively and were not inferior at all, but they were very unclinical in converting any kind of chances. The missed penalty into a 1-0 loss is also the same for both games.

Great comparison! I was rooting for Peru that WC. They played sexy football and deserved to have advanced. Denmark was still rather dull and defensive back then. This is actually the first game in this WC where an underdog dominated a top team throughout the game. Yet, Canada lost. Even when Belgium played far worse than Argentina and Germany. And Japan and Saudi won despite being on the back-foot for most parts of the game. But that's football. The results don't do justice to the overall performance sometimes. We are spoilt for underdogs punching above their weight so far. Hopefully the trend continues! Serbia is another dark horse that play positive football and could upset the odds. Unlikely for them to beat Brazil but I'm hoping they would advance eventually.

So I'm happy with those 3 points! Even though we got dominated in the first half it's all that matters. Seen a lot of complaints about the penalty calls. Obviously our broadcast is biased but both calls can be defended. Definitely no 'clear mistake' that warrants a VAR overruling imo. For the first one Vertonghen gets the ball first. I understand that getting the ball first is no excuse for then shovelling an attacker into the grass but that's not quite what happened. In the replay here you can also clearly see that Vertonghen doesn't 'plant' his foot: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/z2yy9m/closeup_on_canada_penalty_shout/ 2nd one had Witsel running alongside the Canadian striker when the Canadian very obviously put his leg in front of Witsel looking for contact lol: https://dubz.co/v/8x5cb8 Meanwhile the penalty they did get happened from a corner that shouldn't have been one - Canada player kicked the ball out - and at the end of the second half there was of course the 2-legs scissor tackle from behind that should always have been a red card. So imo Canada did not get screwed by the referee, they did get screwed by their own forwards though.

I feel like most of my potential candidates are stacked in the same groups (D, F, G), which feels unsatisfying. Argentina as I am sick of people saying Messi needs a World Cup to prove his greatness. Denmark probably appeal to my neutral sensibilities the most though, just the way they’ve been conducting themselves, plus the Eriksen narrative is compelling. Btw who said they hated Christian Eriksen a few pages back? Why haha?
