i'm not a religious man myself, but if someone ever says that to me, i'd just kindly reply "thank you" at the very least ... i'm pretty pissed when people keep bringing religion up and try to shove it down my throat, but people who try so hard to tell the world that they're not religious annoy me even more :/

Do you go off on that tangent whenever someone says "Bless you" after a sneeze, too?

So this middle aged lady comes with who I assume is her husband and orders her food. As she was about to leave she said "god bless you, you're a mighty fine boy working at such a young age." I replied with a "mhmm" and the lady lashed out at me. She said "what's the matter?" Okay, lets go back a bit before I go on. I don't care about religion, being an atheist, or any of that. I don't really care when I die and where I go as long as I can have kids and die happy. Anyways, I proceeded to tell her that I don't care about religion, making it short as possible because I don't really want to know her opinion and thoughts about it. She told me I should go to hell.. WTF? and that I should be ashamed of myself. Does anyone else get this type of shit? Say "Thank you" and move on to the next customer. It's your job as a cashier to make customers happy, not to discuss religion.

If I had said "by the spirit of the moon! you a quite a good kid!" theres no reason to say anything but "thank you" and smile. Don't dismiss someone who is trying to compliment you...

I understand how it could get under your skin, but I'd assume when you're working getting into a theological discussion isn't really the best idea. It sucks that she went off like that, and it'd probably piss me off too, but you had the power to avoid that point. I'm going to continue the massively long train of people that basically agree with this. I'm not exactly a huge believer either, but that doesn't mean that I have to automatically disdain or ignore everything about religion. If someone says that I'm blessed or something I know that, in their eyes, they're giving me a compliment, and that's nice. There are good people who are Atheists and good people who are Christian: I don't discriminate between them. Stand up for your beliefs, but don't push them all over the place. It's what Atheists have long accused Christians of when some of them have started doing the same. Just live your life and be happy. Note that this turned into a mini-rant; it wasn't fully directed at you since what you did wasn't awful or anything, just slightly rude.

If you don't understand that, which apparently you don't, then you must be young and/or ignorant, which apparently you are.
