DK - newest to D&D out of the group, willing to learn.
DD - pretty much same level of newbieness as DK. However... he just does his own thing without consulting anyone who's actually /looked/ at the Player's Handbook. Or you know, reading it himself.
Tu - my friend's step-dad who used to DM; knows all versions.
Over the weekend, and into the week so far, I've had some pretty geeky things happen. I've discovered the Deaf Pedestrian's song Hail to the Geek...and I have to admit, watching the Wrath of Khan on a plasma screen would be amazing.
Related to D&D though... I've had conversations with T and Z every night so far, ranging from three hours to twenty minutes, sometimes two in one night. Their characters are pretty much done; T decided to be a Paladin instead of a Rogue and got these amazing stats x.x I probably should have made him reroll they were so good. Lady luck favored him today. Had a nice long conversation with someone who hadn't really started on his character yet, DK, and he's going for a healing cleric. However, we seem to have someone in our group who takes things a bit too literally.
We'll call him DD. He's a half-orc Barbarian - I don't remember what he rolled for his stats though - so, pretty standard stuff. His mic isn't working, so we just communicate through IM; however, DK, Z and I are still using our mics every once in a while. In the IM bar, I ask DD how his skills and stats are coming, and he tells us... oh god. Here, I'll pull up the IM history. It's a bit long, so I'll put it in spoilers.

DD: so how does one figure out skill modifiers?
Me: I went over that during lunch didn't I? :/
DD: not really...
DD: you went over ability modifiers
Z: they're, like, pure simplicity
Me: and yeah they kind of are
Me: it explains everything
Z: what don't you understand about it?
DK: i dont get what you mean.
DD: everything... I simply have no knowledge of how they get figured out. It's like when you're little and don't know how to make sammiches, I simply don't know
Me: ...see the bars on top of the blank boxes?
Me: it says what goes in there :/
DD: it says skill modifier... it doesn't tell me how to figure the skill modifier out though
DD: wait a sec...
DD: i got it
Z: you see the "+" ?
DD: i neglected to look an inch to the right...
Me: ...
DD: i switched wisdom and dexterity, there are no class skills that need dex and a few that need wis
Me: you're kidding right
Me: Ride needs dex
Me: ...wtf
Me: you're a freaking barb
Me: you need dex
Me: BARBS DONT NEED NO COMMON SENSE MAN
Z: dex is not primarily used for skills
Z: it's used for combat calculations
Z: such as armor checks, initiative...
Z: you also need it for certain combat feats that you will need
Me: it's nice to be able to hit things you know
DD: survival and listen need wisdom... i'd like to survive
Z: survive skill is only used if your, like, tracking and when you're stranded and out of food
Me: way to take it literally
Z: we will have food
DD: meh... i suppose so. What all is dexterity used for? hitting things?
Z: a LOT more than wisdom
Z: like... you literally have absolutely NO use for wisdom
Me: you = barb
Z: and your primary role as a barbarian is to hit things so...
Me: barb = RAWR A DOOR
DD: very well... i'll go around with no intellegence and no wisdom, a walking cesspit of stupidity
Me: yeah that's a barb
DD: very well then...
DD: Toa of Metal: little do you know, my stupidity is all an act to fit within the curse put upon me by the great god Erythnul
Me: wat
DD: don't worry about it
Me: backing away now
DD: Imma worship Erythnul... seems a good god for a half-orc barbarian
DD: alright... i'm trying to read how skill ranks work, this is just confusing

Now that I look back over it, it's hilarious how calm Z sounds. he was freaking out over voice chat (DD couldn't hear it since his computer wouldn't pick up the call). So, lunch tomorrow is going to be poor DK, Z, T and I trying to explain to him that barbarians are supposed to be stupid :/ I think he rolled a 4 on his common sense...
But hey, it's all good, because after that, I get a text message from my friend who's out of town for the week, saying that her step dad (who we'll call Tu) used to DM, and he wants to join the group! (I think as a character, I'm not sure whether he wants to co-DM or what). So finally, finally, someone else has more experience than me. Blahhh. I love having resources like that, and it's been a bit overwhelming. I've cited more pages in the PHB than I have any of my textbooks over the weekend, and the amount of knowledge I'm trying to pack into my head definitely isn't healthy xD it'll be amazing to have someone with a ton of experience playing a character as well as DMing right there. Honestly I would be very happy if he offered to DM...but he does have a life, so I don't know how that'll work xD if he does, I might just go for the 4.0 since I don't have to worry about pulling from B.
Alright, and it's bedtime for me. Got a biology test tomorrow and I think the lead exposure from our intro to soldering is starting to get to my head. Goodnight TL ^^ Oh, and if you have any comments on how to make this more readable, do let me know! I'd hate to be confusing people and be completely oblivious to it.
Edit: shoooot, I just realized I named two people B in my first post about this. uhhh. Ignore the first B mentioned, he's not going on board until the summer anyway. sorry Dx
