This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I figured I'd try before I dropped $100 on a keyboard.
Does anyone that attends MIT and preferably lives on campus have a mechanical keyboard? Basically, I wanted to see if I could try typing on a couple with different types of switches to see how loud they really are, how their being tactile or not actually feels etc. Unfortunately best buys don't seem to carry them, and the other option of microcenter is like a 40 minute walk from where I live.
Again a bit random, appreciate the help if anyone has one and doesn't feel weird having me over for a few minutes. I'm a Ph.D. student at MIT so it's not like I only live in the area
Thanks

Yea but it's sold out which isn't so helpful It's not a question of finding where to buy them, it's finding somewhere to try it out

i believe what raeleigh meant was that you can go to best buy to try out the blackwidow and test out its mechanical switch to get a feel.

I checked my local one already

Usually, most computer stores/companies/bigger retail chains like Best Buy SHOULD have one out for you to try. The BlackWidow box itself has an open spot where you can click four of the keys and see what it feels like.
But, since Best Buy doesn't even have them.. (Ask if they'll be getting them in or if they have some to try out)
If you have a weekend, find a store that does. Go out, enjoy a day chillin', and go try it out. =P
I work at a smaller computer store(although it's getting increasingly popular in Canada and the States to a degree), we have 3 different keyboards to try out. A Mechanical Gaming keyboard, a Gaming Keyboard(some Logitech G15 or something, I have no idea), and a normal, wireless keyboard.
So. o:

Semi informative but completely irrelevant to what OP was asking for :3

It's a second option if he can't find anyone who lives around the area.
Your post, on the otherhand, was completely unnecessary. =D!

I feel tension!
As to another completely irrelevent post, this is why HMC > MIT! Mailing lists and closer community ftw!
If you are a diamond 3500+ pointer player and is thinking of going to MIT, go to mudd instead!

mm 1 bump in case any MIT people or locals missed this

I know a couple people who will be returning to MIT soon, although I doubt they will actually have a mechanical keyboard. I'll see if they have any though.

If you're planning on showing up to the New England LAN tourney: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=176378 then you may be able to try one out. Several people, myself included, will be bringing their mechanical keyboard.
And as a side note, they're awesome, but if you're in a multiple person dorm room or are a poor college student then you may wanna skip out. Especially if you + friends drink alcohol near/around your keyboard.

If you want to reach people at MIT, email the mailing list which you can find at

I live in a 2 person apartment so noise shouldn't be an issue, also I'm only a semi poor grad student so I can afford it

Well, now I have a Razer Blackwidow, if anyone wants to come try it out haha It's pretty sexy to type on, and I love the clicky keys. Will take a little getting used to because it's so much more responsive but I imagine it'll be great soon
