My PC decided i had had a good enough run till now, and it was time to take a stab at making me suicidal.
the dreaded, but all too common BSoD. it's my first one on this PC and it's becoming a severe problem at least for my sanity. usual suspects have been ruled out for the most part; high temps/ memory problems. which leads me to believe it's either a software problem, or my graphics card ( please please please don't let it be my graphics card).
what is most annoying is it started out of nowhere for no reason, simply poof BSoD. the bsod didn't help just gave me a code without the usually helpful text beside it. i googled the code but to no avail, im starting to think(hope) maybe something is written wrong but i know it isn't lol Error: STOP 0x00000098 (0x000000004c9e6980, 0x0000000001cab99b, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
im running the pc in safe mode right now waiting for a BSoD so i can cry myself to sleep tonight knowing it's a hardware problem. Honestly if it is, it will be a mixed blessing because i HATE software problems, but it will cost my broke ass some money, and narrowing down what exactly is faulty will be a bitch T.T.
anyways this is more of a rant, but i would really appreciate if one of you computer geniuses out there knew of anything i could try, even if it's a long shot. without further ado the specs
OS: windows 7 (RC) i know i know, ill get around to it. hopefully this is actually my problem ^ ^.
RAM: 4gb (2x2) gskill ddr2 1066 CPU: Q6600 at stock everything Graphics: gtx260 EVGA so lifetime warranty ftw also no OCing HDD: WD6400AAKS 640GB yes only one i know im lazy and broke PSU: corsair 750tx MoBo: P5QL pro don't ask. Case: antec 900
the BSods happened first while watching a video online ( which made my heart stop) and then again watching the same video later after a bit of panic, and denial. then i adjusted the fans checked the temps while doing stuff constantly, and it crashed while browsing TL T.T. temps where fine. then memtest and more tweaking of fans and paranoia, and deep cleaning, followed by a crash while playing HoN for a bit. at this point i went into denial again and played hon and got a crash a bit after starting.
and that's when i decided to make this blog and restart in safe mode to clarify a bit if it is indeed a software or hardware issue.
UPDATE: it crashed in safe mode. probably a hardware issue, is there anything else i can do to narrow this down? fml
Cliffs: - random bsods - not high temps, not ram, - checking to narrow if its hardware or software - doubt it's my super reliable psu. - might be dumbass mobo which WOULD SUCK. - might be GPU which would suck but a bit less than mobo. - would love help

Yes it is. The evaluation period might very well be up, Windows7 full version has been out for quite a while now, and the beta will eventually start shutting itself off, even if a bsod might and shouldnt be the most elegant solution. also, google is your friend.

Maybe you can get it cheap or for free from your university (if you are a student, I dunno ). A fresh installation never hurts.

FML it crashed in safe mode any tips to narrow this down further?

Windows 7 RC expiration functionality
Effective March 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC enters the next phase of expiration: Expiration notifications in the task bar continue. Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours.
Important When the computer restarts, your work will not be saved.
I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to say.

Lol, google "STOP 0x00000098", the couple first links explain all:
Error: STOP 0x00000098 = END_OF_NT_EVALUATION_PERIOD

lolool im an idiot thanks, good thing is i took out the cpu heatsink and the stock termal paste is pretty crappy very porous.
tomorrow i will have a new os and thermal paste.
funny about the end of evaluation period warning, last time it did this ( old ass pc) i had the actual written words on the BSoD screen, this time no such luck just the code which i uess i should have recognized.
my google skills blow thank you again.
every time i have a pc problem i always come out looking like an idiot lol
P.S kind of shitty for them to BSOD me every two hours, jeez at least give a brother a pop up warning

Microsoft wants your money Etherone , not your brotherly love.

You'd think they'd do it with an uncancellable shutdown popup saying "Windows is shutting down in xx minutes. Please save any unsaved work", plus some "Buy the full version" commercials. How is the stereotypical computer-using housewife supposed to know what's up when there's a bluescreen with only an error code?
|
lmao... really? When windows 7 eval period ends it just blue screens... its like some kind of awful joke. Congrats Microsoft for being a huge ass.

just incentive to buy the real product
can't really blame microsoft
sure blue screen is a bit excessive, but so is using Windows 7 RC when Windows 7 has been out for 3 months -_-

True, but they don't even tell you why? There's no countdown or chance to save your work? Just blue death... and less sanity than one would normally have.
