What I drank last Friday
Unlike restaurants, when you go into a bar to get a drink (or many) they don't have an extensive menu. You go up to the Bartender, tell them what you want, and they either get it for you or tell you they don't have it. So how do you learn what the options are? What stops them from giving you a drink and then telling you afterward it costs 50 bucks?
Annoying as this is, I'm spending more time in bars than I used to (Happy Hour on pay day wooo!) so it's time for me to learn more about this... in college I did all my drinking in dorm rooms/apartments.
My prior experiences...
As I've said in someone else's blog in the past, I don't like beer. I understand there's a huge assortment of types of beer, and it's very possible I'll eventually find one that I like. In the meantime, I am not ordering any since I'm like 0/10 with beers that friends promised me I would like. Basically the same story with wine. I actually like some after dinner drinks but I wouldn't get that at Happy Hour.
A few drinks I've ordered recently were vodka with cranberry/lime, screwdrivers, jack and coke, and rum and coke. The problem with the 'and coke' drinks is that I end up having a ton of soda which I really don't want... and it is gassy as hell anyway. Surely there are some alternatives to these common drinks I just listed.
So, what else is there? How do you even go about researching this? Should I just sit at the bar all day listening to other people's orders!? I don't want to come across like the lady waiting at the pharmacy for a guy to ask for extra large condoms if you know what I mean.

Vodka water is my default drink. Tastes like lemon water and it's hydrating you while dehydrating you!! And it's like 70 calories.
I don't even know what you're asking. How do you try new drinks? Usually it's through word of mouth - I'm at the bar, someone orders something I've never tried and I want to try it too. Short of that I guess you'd just have to ask what everyone's favourite drink is, making a list and starting drinking them.

Also congrats on getting your icon finally... I tried making something similar a while ago but I couldn't get it to work but luckily the graphics team or whoever made that is better at it.
edit: It's probably clear but I hate the way word of mouth is how information about drinks spread :p
edit 2: vodka water is just vodka in water? I've never heard of that before.

I actually happen to be on long island XD
The other drinks I've heard of but haven't tried except for a pina colada... which was good except don't most bars not have frozen drinks?

This thread is going to turn into a shitfest because everyone is just going to come in posting their favourite drinks and not explaining why they're good.

Nah that's okay I can look them up once I know what they are and that they exist... and besides that's still a hell of a lot better than this.

Yep, it is. But people usually call it by the abbreviated term, AMF

In the UK, by law, any licensed bar must display a full price list on the premises.

Yea they should, it's teal drink. Bars I've been to always had it. I am pretty sure you've seen it before.

jager bombs:D
lol try "cold war" as well. one bar i've had it at listed it as vodka + whisky + something else.. it tasted surprisingly good.
also one of my all time faves is the LONG ISLAND ICE TEA
|
Well what's hard to understand is if you want straight drinks or cocktails only, are you trying to find the best tasting drink, have something to chill with?
Personally my favorite drink is Absinth, but in the states you'll only get it thujone free.
It really depends what your goal is, I think long island ice tea is served in almost every bar and never quite tastes the same, but most people dont really like it and just get it to get drunk.
One I can suggest would be a White-Russian (vodka, kahlua, cream) , however you already mentioned you haven't tried many of the traditional cocktails so you might want to try those (Tequila Sunrise and such).

AMF is great, it's almost all liquor too. same with long island
you can also look up drinks online.. one bar I go to has specials on certain days (like vodka drinks or single shot drinks, etc) so we look up things to try. also if it's not too busy the bartender is usually happy to recommend things
it's not really a regular drink but I also like Jagerbombs but it won't get you drunk. I don't really like trying to get drunk off mixed drinks though, usually I just have a bunch of shots at the start and then sip on a jack and coke the rest of the time. seems a shame to mix things with patron anyways

quit being a pussy ordering all those mix drinks-- just go with the topshelf stuff on the rocks
okok or you could go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cocktails
The drinks with the little square image after the name are generally the most common ones you can expect to find pretty much anywhere. If you dont want soda you can order pretty much any martini, and you might want to try a mojito, manhattan, and tom collins which all technically have a little carbonation in them but arent as heavy and imo not as "gassy" as the "and coke" drinks. Gin and tonic is a good standby too that every bar will have ( i reccomend you learn what Gin you like them to make it with though, as some are significantly better than others -- I prefer Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray Rangpur given the options).
All of those drinks (as well as the Long island ice tea) should be available at pretty much any bar. You should know before you start knocking back long islands that they are almost 100% liquor so force yourself to keep track of how many you've had.
Cheers!

if you're secure in your masculinity try a sex on the beach. its a fruity/girly drink but its really good and most bars have it.
i recommend it because i also dont like beers, was in a similar dilemma as you and i was offered this drink by this bar tender and she was right.
