What I drank last Friday
Unlike restaurants, when you go into a bar to get a drink (or many) they don't have an extensive menu. You go up to the Bartender, tell them what you want, and they either get it for you or tell you they don't have it. So how do you learn what the options are? What stops them from giving you a drink and then telling you afterward it costs 50 bucks?
Annoying as this is, I'm spending more time in bars than I used to (Happy Hour on pay day wooo!) so it's time for me to learn more about this... in college I did all my drinking in dorm rooms/apartments.
My prior experiences...
As I've said in someone else's blog in the past, I don't like beer. I understand there's a huge assortment of types of beer, and it's very possible I'll eventually find one that I like. In the meantime, I am not ordering any since I'm like 0/10 with beers that friends promised me I would like. Basically the same story with wine. I actually like some after dinner drinks but I wouldn't get that at Happy Hour.
A few drinks I've ordered recently were vodka with cranberry/lime, screwdrivers, jack and coke, and rum and coke. The problem with the 'and coke' drinks is that I end up having a ton of soda which I really don't want... and it is gassy as hell anyway. Surely there are some alternatives to these common drinks I just listed.
So, what else is there? How do you even go about researching this? Should I just sit at the bar all day listening to other people's orders!? I don't want to come across like the lady waiting at the pharmacy for a guy to ask for extra large condoms if you know what I mean.

Vodka water is my default drink. Tastes like lemon water and it's hydrating you while dehydrating you!! And it's like 70 calories.
I don't even know what you're asking. How do you try new drinks? Usually it's through word of mouth - I'm at the bar, someone orders something I've never tried and I want to try it too. Short of that I guess you'd just have to ask what everyone's favourite drink is, making a list and starting drinking them.

Also congrats on getting your icon finally... I tried making something similar a while ago but I couldn't get it to work but luckily the graphics team or whoever made that is better at it.
edit: It's probably clear but I hate the way word of mouth is how information about drinks spread :p
edit 2: vodka water is just vodka in water? I've never heard of that before.

I actually happen to be on long island XD
The other drinks I've heard of but haven't tried except for a pina colada... which was good except don't most bars not have frozen drinks?

This thread is going to turn into a shitfest because everyone is just going to come in posting their favourite drinks and not explaining why they're good.

Nah that's okay I can look them up once I know what they are and that they exist... and besides that's still a hell of a lot better than this.

Yep, it is. But people usually call it by the abbreviated term, AMF

In the UK, by law, any licensed bar must display a full price list on the premises.

Yea they should, it's teal drink. Bars I've been to always had it. I am pretty sure you've seen it before.

jager bombs:D
lol try "cold war" as well. one bar i've had it at listed it as vodka + whisky + something else.. it tasted surprisingly good.
also one of my all time faves is the LONG ISLAND ICE TEA
|
Well what's hard to understand is if you want straight drinks or cocktails only, are you trying to find the best tasting drink, have something to chill with?
Personally my favorite drink is Absinth, but in the states you'll only get it thujone free.
It really depends what your goal is, I think long island ice tea is served in almost every bar and never quite tastes the same, but most people dont really like it and just get it to get drunk.
One I can suggest would be a White-Russian (vodka, kahlua, cream) , however you already mentioned you haven't tried many of the traditional cocktails so you might want to try those (Tequila Sunrise and such).
|
AMF is great, it's almost all liquor too. same with long island
you can also look up drinks online.. one bar I go to has specials on certain days (like vodka drinks or single shot drinks, etc) so we look up things to try. also if it's not too busy the bartender is usually happy to recommend things
it's not really a regular drink but I also like Jagerbombs but it won't get you drunk. I don't really like trying to get drunk off mixed drinks though, usually I just have a bunch of shots at the start and then sip on a jack and coke the rest of the time. seems a shame to mix things with patron anyways
|
quit being a pussy ordering all those mix drinks-- just go with the topshelf stuff on the rocks
okok or you could go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cocktails
The drinks with the little square image after the name are generally the most common ones you can expect to find pretty much anywhere. If you dont want soda you can order pretty much any martini, and you might want to try a mojito, manhattan, and tom collins which all technically have a little carbonation in them but arent as heavy and imo not as "gassy" as the "and coke" drinks. Gin and tonic is a good standby too that every bar will have ( i reccomend you learn what Gin you like them to make it with though, as some are significantly better than others -- I prefer Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray Rangpur given the options).
All of those drinks (as well as the Long island ice tea) should be available at pretty much any bar. You should know before you start knocking back long islands that they are almost 100% liquor so force yourself to keep track of how many you've had.
Cheers!

if you're secure in your masculinity try a sex on the beach. its a fruity/girly drink but its really good and most bars have it.
i recommend it because i also dont like beers, was in a similar dilemma as you and i was offered this drink by this bar tender and she was right.

scotch, plain, make it a double

An Irish Coffee is good if you're sitting at the bar and still want to get drunk long into the night. It just combines coffee, whiskey, sugar and cream. But I've found that its hard to get a good one since sometimes the coffee is quite old at bars.

Magners Cider is the only alcoholic beverage that i have tried in which I absolutely enjoy the taste.
|
|
absinthe, czech please. otherwise in summer: gin and tonic/ginger, ouzo, pastis winter: single malt whiskey
|
Ask for a mix of mango juice, two to three shots' worth of honey liqueur, and yogurt, served in a tall glass. It's like a mango lassi but it has alcohol, and it's fucking delicious

Yes, but around here most people call it just ' Adios', not AMF. Plus it's easier to say adios in a loud bar to a bartender than AMF in my experience anyways.
This is my favorite mixed drink. (really I only ever order this, any other time it's basic shit like rum+coke) Usually it's served in a Collins glass and has 50% or more alcohol in it (gin/vodka/rum/etc) splash of lemon lime soda and some blue curocao. Top it off with a lemon, lime or cherry and your tongue is gonna turn blue in a matter of seconds. The great thing about this is that you can barely taste the aftertaste of the alcohol ever unless it's like over 80% in the glass ( It mixes so well). I find most places charge 6-10$ for one of these, and beware of the shiesty places who try to serve it in smaller glasses (that angers me to no end).
After about 3 of these you are gonna start getting fucked up and it'll start to taste like windex as well.
btw micro, what kind of beers do you hate the most? Dark ones? Light ones? Thick ones? Sweet/fruity?
I've always been fond of St. Pauli Girl, Stella Artois, and Grolsh which are all pretty middle ground or the smoothness and not too strong not too light beers. Negra Modelo Especial is another really good mexican beer. If you like fruity shit I'd recommend hefeweizen with a lemon/orange in it or one of those peach/summer ales from sierra nevada or pyramid.

gz on being on Long Island (hometown pride). That said, don't order a Long Island ice tea, you dumbass.
Also, AMF is for fratboys getting smashed on the weekend, not after just getting off work.
Rules of male social drinking: (1) If uncertain, a beer is always safe. I disliked beer for a long time, but the taste does grow on you with experience. Try a wide variety and find out just how much bitterness & carbonation your tongue will tolerate. (2) The more stuff is in it, or the more fruity it is, stay away. Learn to enjoy your booze straight. (3) As a man, your staples in hard liquor are brandy, whiskey, tequila, and vodka. Rum is ok, but is a little on the aromatic side and may get you some funny looks in certain parts of the country. Long Island should be tolerant. (4) Save your hard liquor until the sun is below the horizon. It's just dumb getting shitfaced that early in the day.

Fuzzy Navel ftw , peach schnapps and orange juice

Speaking as a (former) bartender it's a lot easier to recommend drinks (especially cocktails) off of some flavor that you like - Sweet? Sour? Bitter? Herby? Citrus? Fruit? Some particular thing? What's your flavor of choice? I'll list a few options for everyone's general information, if you have a particular question or taste, feel free to ask and I'll try to suggest something.
If you're a fan of coffee, for example, you might enjoy Black/White Russians:
Black Russian: 1 3/4 oz. vodka 3/4 oz. coffee liqueur
White Russian: As per Black Russian, but in a larger glass topped off with cream.
Sour/citric tastes appeal? Perhaps a whiskey or amaretto sour (the amaretto one is a more of a sweet and sour kind of drink):
Whiskey/Amaretto Sour: 1 1/4 oz. whiskey/Amaretto 1 1/4 oz. sour mix (typically a premix of lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white, though can also be done with just lemon juice and sugar) served shaken in an old fashioned glass, garnished with a maraschino cherry
More into bitter/herbal tastes? Drinks like gin and tonic, dry gin martinis and absinthes are options here.
Dry Martini: 2 1/4 oz. gin (or vodka, but the taste ends up completely different, less bitter and herbal if vodka is used) 1/4 oz. white vermouth stirred over ice, strained into a chilled cocktail glass, garnished with a cocktail olive on a pick.
And a timeless classic that I recommend to just about anyone is the Manhattan. It's a smooth cocktail with a good balance of flavor that's great for neophyte drinkers with a touch of class.
Manhattan: 1 3/4 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey 3/4 oz. red vermouth 2 drops aromatic bitters (Agnostura, Peychaud, etc.)* stirred over ice, strained into a chilled cocktail glass, garnished with a maraschino cherry on a pick. *NOTE: It is amazing the difference that the 2 drops of bitters make to the taste of this cocktail. You can tell someone is making it right if they add these, and you can tell that a bartender is ill-informed or lazy if they don't.

I am not sure about you guys but I can barely cook for myself the idea of mixing a drink with a bunch of shit; myself seems to hard I would rather get a pack of Guinness beer.
|
Just ask the bartender. As long as its not super busy, theyll usually be happy to help and reccommend a drink. No-one knows their bar better than they do. As for price, you go out to a bar, expect your drink to cost a bit of cash, people dont go out to get drunk cheap.
