What is a Nomic?
It's a game of self-amendment: the rules, goals and methods are all controlled by the democratic vote of the players.
The initial ruleset (http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/writing/nomic.htm#initial%20set) outlines how to start, but can be summarized to these four rules:
1. Each player takes a turn, decided by some logical order (clockwise, alphabetical, etc).
2. During each turn the player may propose/amend/repeal a rule. Once proposed, the players put it to a vote, and if it receives majority support, it passes.
3. During each turn the player will roll a single-sided die, and add the result to his score.
4. The first player to reach a score of 100 wins.
The last two rules are intentionally drab to inspire players to find clever ways to win whilst maintaining a majority to pass their proposals.
Due to it's dynamic nature, a Nomic is driven by the creativity and potential of its players. A game could last 5 rounds, 5 hours, or 5 years (in fact, there is a game in progress that started in 1993!).
If anyone is interested, I'll be setting up a Nomic with the four rules listed above as our initial ruleset in the quakenet IRC channel #nomic (irc://quakenet/nomic). These games grow more interesting with more players, so anyone is welcome and encouraged to play! =p
