I could make similar nonsense statements about any war game, any trading card game, any game where you 'battle', and anything else. I mean it is fine if the game doesn't appeal to you but c'mon. Every 'point' in that article has little to do with the game itself; they are making complaints about society generally. From the starting point of 'society is inherently racist' you can go to 'everything from society is therefor racist or working under a racist system' without it being that much a stretch, and you can make fairly coherent arguments that that is the case. But then when you are going that far you are just going to see racism in everything, a silly mobile game included.

Comparing it to slavery the game makes you sound like the nutters 10ish years ago who said it promoted occult ideas or the people who were against harry potter because of witchcraft and sorcery. They are basically pets that you bond and build relationship with. No more 'slavery' than owning a cat or a dog. Can you have bad pet owners, yes you can, and there are people in the pokemon universe that act less than nobly, but they are the bad guys. I have dogs and cats and other pets. Still, I don't send them off to fight other dogs... Say what you will, but the entire premise of this game is flawed. It reminds me of the greatest social engineering in human history: turning genocide into child's play (cowboys vs indians for those not in the know). Maybe it's because I'm from the generation predating the Pokemon so I was never on the hype, or maybe it's because I've made sociology of morality and ethics my primary field of study back at the university. I don't know, but somehow it just feels wrong. I mean, you catch those creatures, then you feed and train them so they grow stronger so you can catch more of them and use them in fights against others who do so. Also, the difference between Pokemon and your regular pets as far as I know is that they're pretty intelligent, self-aware and even have their own language and what not. They're not just fantasy animals, there's more to that. Anyway, just ignore my ramblings but please put some thought into that.

Except that they don't exist they never have existed and the language is just saying the pokemon's name over and over again. I haven't watched the show since I was little but i think the whole moral of it was working together treating pokemon well and not abusing them was the right thing to do.

The author literally cites the same Kotaku article twice followed up by citing an article about the kotaku article. His only other source is some unlinked or named Tumblr page, which could easily be a)satire or b)nonexistent I dunno about you but I don't take Kotaku as a serious source so I think this website is pretty weak as well, I feel stupid for even reading that article.

Of course the premise is kinda flawed, but come on, you gotta let people have their innocent fun. And from what I can gather from the internet, it's pretty empowering for some people, too. Read the stories that people are telling. Soo, maybe let crazy little fantasy creatures be just that.

You could make similar complaints about a lot of games being 'wrong' (especially MMO's/FPS')... WoW is just one endless genocide of the animals for XP/organs/horns/hides. It doesn't mean WoW players are suddenly fans of animal poaching. These games aren't real and making an analogy to actual pets is ridiculous. People who play pokemon aren't exactly the demographic prone to dog fighting, and the game in no way normalizes RL pet battles.

Dude you got to chill, it's fucking pokemon and you manage to link it to genocide. There are 1 million other things to worry about and pokemon is not one of them.

It's true that the basic premise of catching creatures to train and battle with sounds pretty wrong. Especially when you consider that trainer's take Pokemon from their natural habitats and force them to live in Pokeballs and basically only let them out to battle. Of course Nintento put a lot of effort into making the story of the games and show focus on building relationships between pokemon and trainers and this was clearly done to ensure there is a positive message being taught to kids. There is nothing wrong with pointing out that the world of pokemon has some conflicting messages about the relationships between trainers/pokemon and thus humans/animals. Though, yea at some point you gotta take a step back and realize it's all just a game/fantasy and one that tries very hard to to raise some of those questions itself while having a positive "lets work together" message.

how exactly does incense work? this has probably been asked before but again, im not gonna read 23 pages. a friend of mine used it randomly and the first pokemon she encountered was a dragonite. does incense make pokemon that doesnt otherwise spawn in the area spawn? or does it just increase the frequency of all pokemon in the area of showing up. if its the latter it would mean my area naturally spawns dragonites too, which ive never ever seen before.
