Hello. I'm feeling a little bit ranty this morning and there is no one else around so I'm going to spill the beans here.
I'm a teacher in a school. On a good day my job is amazing, better than any other job I can imagine. Sometimes though it can be really frustrating and it makes me despair.
One reason I despair is that it seems like nobody really gives a shit about anything. Kids don't care about learning or doing well in their exams until the last god-damn second when it is too late. Teachers sure as hell don't care about students, and students don't care about each other. Some examples. Yesterday I caught a kid cheating in an exam, so i sent an e-mail to all the appropriate people, no response from anybody. I'm expecting that somebody will give enough of a shit to reinforce the fact that cheating in exams is a serious matter. Nothing. Everybody is too concerned with the fact it is Friday and tomorrow we have a staff party. What do people care about? Anything that directly relates to them. People care about their mothers and wives and daughters etc because if anything happened to them, they personally would be fucked. Anybody else (colleague, friend, random stranger) could just disappear and people would get over it in less than a week. This also goes for any kind of abstract issue, such as equality. Women are feminists, gay people fight for their rights, etc. Why don't people just stand up for equality in general? The basic premise that all people should be treated equally and have equal opportunities? It's just so self centered and intellectually redundant.
Even when you care about somebody, they don't care that you are caring about them. My colleague had a really serious accident last year and ever since then he's been struggling not only with physical injuries but also depression caused by long term brain injury. The guy isn't in work for 2 days straight so I start asking around, nobody knows where he is. Not his boss, not anyone in his department. I sent him a message, no reply. Eventually he comes back to work and I ask him what happened, he just didn't feel well so took a few days off. Anything could have happened to the guy and nobody would have known about it.
Second thing that gets me down is that it is the nature of people that they don't listen to half of whatever it is you are saying. When you are reading this right now you're just trying to figure out how this fits into your mental narrative, and anything that doesn't, you'll just ignore it. You won't even read it. Your eyes will see it, but it won't enter your thoughts. Why is this annoying? I'm a teacher. You can tell people something a hundred times, but if it doesn't fit what they already believe, then forget it. They won't remember it at all. Am I any different? Maybe no, but at least I'm aware that I'm doing it and consciously working against it. Another annoying effect of this is with people who are really ignorant despite having the whole world of human knowledge readily available to them on the internet. Yes the internet is full of spurious information, but enough exposure combined with critical thinking would, I'm sure, lead to generally less ignorance.
And don't try and change anything for the better at your place of work, because you'll eventually tread on some fucker's toes who thinks you're personally attacking him/her because the problem you're trying to fix comes under their realm of influence. This may well be a stinking pile of shit, but it's MINE ok!

Haha! Read this anyway.
I agree with you pretty much about the whole text and I think it's just the product of the recent development on the western culture. I could write a more in-depth analysis of my opinions of this matter, but I feel nobody in the internet gives a shit about anything you write here either so I'll just save the time and effort.

I'm sure there are other people who care just like you do. I hope you find them!

Very true. There is a lot that could be said about this topic. The attitude you describe is a cancer to humanity.

This shit isn't recent It's an ancient problem
But it can be fixed Raise your children to be aware of it, and to counter it. And then they will raise their children to do the same, and eventually there will be significant change.

Thanks for the insight. I personally believe that the reason we don't all go for equality in general as opposed to supporting our own particular standpoints is because 'equality in general' is not a thing and rather dehumanizes the whole process. So while we can't have perfect equality we can strive for it, and it's up to everyone to motivate their reasons for their particular causes, taking action where appropriate.

You should try teaching at a private school.

It seems like it could be worse at private school.

I agree with you 100%, but we could't be more further from each other on what we mean (that makes sense, trust me)
It is completely a western/enlightenment type fault. Humans were never designed to be penned up into small, crappily lit rooms learning arbitrary/random shit...it just doesn't fit well with who we are as animals. For a lot of people school is barely a priority: family, girls and money are always in their minds (the long term benefits of a college education aren't felt nearly as much as a crush on a girl in the present moment)
And about caring for EVERYBODY and standard equality ACROSS THE BOARD: well that is calling for equality w/o diversity...
I think you should strive for something like eqality IN diversity: everyone will be different, and people will like some and dislike others: you just have to understand its human nature.
JUST START GOING WITH THE FLOW MAN! have more fun in your classes, be more relaxed! maybe then you will have more fun AND they will actually learn something because they're having fun too, and not just doing drills on paper for 5 hours straight
