Give me something you have watched to compare with. Because it seems to me that Aldnoah Zero has gone from you calling it "ambitious" to just being "fun", which is the most subjective thing you could possibly say about it. Relative to all other animes. And I used SnK in that initial statement to clarify that I meant more "ambitious" concepts in general anime instead of the same re-hashed tropes. Just because better stuff may have been done, doesn't automatically make Aldnoah terrible -- upon viewing the first episode, I said, "this is a straight rip of Code Geass and that is virtually Space Britannia." Again, I haven't seen the other two you mentioned. Though I only got in to anime in my 20s, compared to your average Western "casual" I think I'm fairly versed in what's available, and I haven't heard of them. If I'm representing your typical Western viewer who's not an anime aficionado, this is the material I have to size-up anime. Thankfully it's not terribly dire; for any given taste there's a decent amount of recommendable follow-up series you can move on to from your first foray in to anime, but what I worry about is the forebodings from the industry that studios are still and always on the fence about moving back to the otaku-serving tropes and generic stuff. What? This is what you said when I first asked you about it being ambitious:
Specifically, in this case, it's ambitious in it's science-fiction endeavours Again, I'm not going to get into Attack on Titan, because thats a whole different argument, and honestly I don't give enough of a shit about Attack on Titan to argue about it (and as far as I'm concerned, Aldnoah Zero and Attack on Titan don't have any relevant similarities in this discussion as it is). But here, you said its ambitious because of its scifi endeavors, but now its something different, and something about not rehashing tropes? Because that isn't true at all, and I say this because I've seen an assload of scifi and mecha anime. In fact, despite me asking you several times for you to give me some specific examples of Aldnoah Zero being ambitious, I haven't gotten anything since the initial "its scifi holds up to scientific scrutiny", which you seem to have since abandoned.
Like I said earlier, I don't hate Aldnoah Zero. But is it ambitious? Unique? If it is, I'm going to need some examples as to how.

Weird that he calls it ambitious and unique but then cites how it was ripping off earlier sci-fi ;x

Why're you arguing semantics? Do I really need to spell it out? It's ambitious compared to most other anime out there, which follow tropes and cliches and often feel really generic. No, this one isn't perfect, but it's a damn better stab in many areas than most. I haven't seen the two mecha animes you mentioned, so this level of hard science-fiction I haven't yet seen in an anime. Argevollen is on Crunchyroll, so I will be checking it out -- curious why it's got a slew of bad ratings and reviews, though. We'll see, I guess. Probably similar issues as -- gasp -- Aldnoah.
As for Slaughter, same with you; seems like you're picking at specific language just to troll me. Yes, it's ambitious (to me.) It's specifically ambitious, if I need to cite something specific, in it's faithful hard science-fiction. It also takes on a plot that, while maybe not more complex than many other animes, does try to present a clever one. Ham-handedly at times, maybe, but it's fun. It's not unique to a tee -- see my comment on Code Geass -- but it beats a hell of a lot of other anime out in terms of an interesting premise.
Anyway, this started out as a good discussion, but somewhere it feels like you decided to just start trolling me with semantic-picking, and this feels like it's gotten rather circular. No idea why it's gotten to this point.

Why do most anime follow tropes and cliches? Because it sells. How many TV shows attempt to do hard sci-fi? Not a lot. Sure, there's a market for that sort of show, but it's niche for a reason.
Hard sci-fi isn't even that rare in anime. Even ignoring old classics, we recently got Knights of Sidonia, GitS: Arise, and Psycho Pass 2 (even though I hated it).

People didn't watch argevollan because the pace of the show moves at a snails pace. Also, most of the good parts were in its 2nd cour and the political intrigue.
Though I don't know why xebec decided to make argevollan when they have fafner.
Actually, I want more magitech series. Can't think of any besides index and mahouka. And maybe nanoha

Hard Sci-fi is usually has a lot more to do with demographic targeting than any kind of "ambition". Name any futuristic Seinen, and it's probably going to have a lot more scientific detail than a Shounen solely because of age appeal and general knowledge of the target audience.
And naturally the young male audience buys into a lot more merchandising than the older male audience, hence more sci-fi fluff that gets made as anime.

Lol Cedstick just having a little fun pointing out contradiction in your statements. As Spazer said, yes a lot of shit is recycled because frankly imo the industry isn't that secure financially to take a lot of risks. Even Hollywood, which has a shit ton more money does basically the same thing.
Knights of Sidonia is fun sci-fi though, can't wait for S2 next season.

I'm watching Rolling Girls, Fafnir, Absolute Duo, Boats, Yona Cour 2, Shigatsu, Saekano, and Shinmai Maou. Any other good ones this season? I'm excited for spring.

No idea why it's gotten to this point. Aldnoah Zero follows tropes and cliches. Lots of them. I mean the entire premise of "Humans with vastly superior technology who live far away from the Earth, governed by an aristocratical monarchy going to war with the Earth, who start dropping giant objects on the Earth to annihilate cities and wreck their planes and tanks" was done 30 years ago in the original Mobile Suit Gundam for God's sake. All the different Aldnoah Mecha from the first season? They were all modeled after a single mecha trope thats been around forever. I can accept the first one, the one with the shield, as being slightly out of the ordinary, but the Beam Saber one, the Rocket Punch one (the idea of Rocket Punches not being a cliche is incredibly hilarious to me), the one that transforms and combines, the ones thats really fast, do you have any idea how much such robots have been regurgitated in mecha anime over and over for the past 40 years? And then they find the Aldnoah Powered ship, well gee, that doesn't sound like Humanity finding the Macross at all. Is the instructor with PTSD not following a cliche? Is the princess not a big cliche?
Please, tell me whats unique about Aldnoah Zero's plot or setting. I've seen practically everything in this show before, in some form or another. I don't care if you haven't seen the two I mentioned, they were just examples of mecha anime thats been released recently. But if you keep calling Aldnoah Zero, that means you must have seen something else from the genre to come to that conclusion, right?
My general point is that since you clearly have barely seen any other mecha anime out there, save for Code Geass I guess, you shouldn't call it unique or ambitious, because you are simply painfully ignorant about the genre.

I specifically mentioned SnK to make a point that my qualm was based on a general observation, not specifically of the mecha genre or hard science-fiction, and I alluded quite a while that said qualm was a problem with the insecurity of the industry and their fear of fully committing to interesting concepts, instead falling-back on said tropes.
This all stemmed from me throwing-out that I disagree with the seemingly extreme opinions on these types of shows: love or hate. I don't know why it's gone to cherry-picking my argument to discredit it for whatever reason, as it really doesn't seem like you've got any actual point or objective other than to show-off how much anime series knowledge you've got. That said, it is interesting to find-out about those two shows, so I am grateful for that.
For what it's worth, I have seen the original Gundam, Code Geass, NGE (if that counts) and some of Escaflowne (though I wasn't a fan.) I think that's a decent amount for an "outsider," as it were. I plan on checking-out RahXephon based on a couple good words I've read here and there. No actual knowledge beyond that, though.

Definitely Shirobako, it's one of my favorites right now. Nanatsu no taizai is decent. Death parade could be good, im not sure on it yet. The first episode was real good, the 2nd was interesting (but a little boring?) and the third was slightly worse than the first 2 imo.

I've explained myself explicitly, re-wording so you can more easily comprehend what I've been trying to say. Here's my original statement: "I don't get the hate for AoT and Aldnoah; it's really baffling that writers or studios who try cool, original concepts or clever writing get shit on." Ok, maybe I shouldn't have lumped cool and "original" together; god forbid I could mean and of the three factors separate or together. I've clarified this numerous times throughout this dumb "argument," and I never said A.Z didn't have any tropes it followed; I said there are a lot of other anime that are generic that rely too heavily on tropes.
I'm not sure what we're disagreeing on other than semantics, but let's just agree to disagree.
